Comments about Sonor Safari 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This is a great gigging kit. I bought it because a 16" bass drum fits more easily into my compact car and the tiny corners that beach bars call "stages." Now I'm most impressed by its sound and price.

Out of the box the wrap looks smooth, the hardware feels sturdy, and the lugs are solid. The stock Remo UX heads on the toms and bass drum tuned up easily to fat, low notes suitable for rock and blues. The kick was surprising. It's doesn't sound like 22 inches, but it sounds like a kick, not a bebop bass drum. The stock Remo UX Powerstroke 4-ish style head produces a nice, short thump. Miked it's even better. Don't waste your money upgrading heads.

The snare was the weak link, but I didn't expect to use it anyway. I tuned it like my other snares, but it clanged horribly, and no amount of fiddling or Moon Gel would dry it out. Then I saw Udo Masshoff's "snare tuning trick" video (YouTube it) and voila! It's now dry and fat, even with the stock head.

The whole bass drum riser thing was confusing. Be aware that the riser hardware is included with the kit. It's an angled bracket that fits into an "extra" tom mount to lift the batter side of the drum off the ground about 4 inches. (The spurs lift the resonant side up. The pedal mounts to the riser.) As a result, your bass drum beater hits the head dead center without having to shorten the shaft.

You will have to make adjustments to your bass drum pedal, however. You have to pull the pedal away from the drum an inch to keep the elevated bass drum hoop from interfering with the pedal's drive chain. But that means the beater shaft has to travel past vertical to make contact. I had to raise the floorboard to get the right feel. It works fine, but I can't swap pedals between kits very easily.

A 16" kick is not the panacea for portability. It's like carting a 5 piece kit without a bass drum. Hardware and cymbal bags are still big and heavy. But this kit fits great into cars, bars, bands and budgets.

Comments about Sonor Safari 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Plan on replacing the stock heads if you weren't already.

The snares could use replacing as well. There's no damper on the snare so you might want to consider moon gels unless you like a very long sound decay and tons of resonance and overtones.

Because the bass drum is raised, the rim actually keeps my beater chain back from the head far enough that the beater makes contact with the head past 90 degrees, which is a big adjustment for me because I like the feel of the beater meeting the head straight on, or as close as possible. If you have pointers on this I'd appreciate a reply.

I dig the hardware. It has a nice aesthetic design, and holds the drums up sturdily. I play them hard, lean on them, and they have never budged.

Great little kit for the price.

Comments about Sonor Safari 4-Piece Shell Pack:

The Sonor Safari is a great set by itself, and it lends itself to add-ons that can add even more versatility. It comes with decent heads and the snare tunes nicely. I put Aquarian batter heads on the toms to give them a richer, deeper sound, and tuned everything. The four-piece has a small footprint and good presence; it projects really well for a small kit. Remember, it's a shell pack so you have to add bass beater, hi-hat and stands. I also added Ludwig Accent toms (re-covered to nearly match the Sonor black sparkle color), and a Sonor Jungle piccolo snare, and rounded the kit out with an Sabian SX20 cymbal set. Very professional look and sound, very versatile, and I can use as much or as little of the kit as needed. Highly recommend this kit for the serious amateur and entry level pro, especially if space is a premium in the home and/or car. This set ROCKS!

Here is a live demo of the kit......Stock badder on the kick (now a superkickII)....Evans hydraulic heads on the Toms. Not using the stock snare here but trust me it sounds good with the factory head......Price jumped since I bought mine 6 weeks ago. Still great value though.
