Comments about Tama Artwood Birch Snare Drum:

This drum is a pleasant surprise. We could spend much more, but is it really worth it? This drum sounds airy, crisp, sensitive, mellow, jazzy, warm, full and rich. I play mainly with brushes and am surprised that a deeper drum is suitable for brush techniques. I prefer medium tuning and feel that's where the sweet-spot is for this drum. This is made from birch, not an exotic wood. You get more than you pay for with this Tama Artwood snare. The sound is most important in any instrument, here you get a beautifully finished drum for a very reasonable price. Look for it on sale like I did.
It's all in the tuning, take the time to really listen to the drum as you tune it and it will tell you where it wants to be. I hope this review helps. Enjoy!

Comments about Tama Artwood Birch Snare Drum:

Thin, resonant shell and pro-level hardware at a very reasonable price. Stock heads far superior to others at this price-point. You can tune most any voice you want from this unit. Looks great (though not clear how durable this will prove). I own a number of top-line snares. The Tamas consistently outperform those costing 4 x as much. I took a chance on this one on sale, and feel pretty certain that it will take the place of its costly cousins on outdoor gigs.

Comments about Tama Artwood Birch Snare Drum:

I was looking for an all birch snare and I came across the Tama Artwood on the Musician's Friend site. Going just by the photo and the price I took a chance and ordered the drum. (Admittedly, I'm a Tama fan.) When I opened the box I was immediately struck by the deep red finish. It was extremely high gloss and flawless! It comes with an Evans G1 batter head and a 300 snare head, both with the level 360 technology. I tuned it to a mid/high range and the sound knocked me out. Good crack and rimshot with tasty ghost notes and buzz rolls. I love this drum. If you're looking for a birch snare drum (and IMHO every drummer should have a maple, a birch, and a steel snare in their arsenal) you won't be dissapointed.
