OVERVIEW

Your dream starts here.

The Tama Imperialstar 5-piece Standard Drum Set is the most affordable Tama drum kit ever to incorporate so many high-end features.

With over 40 years of experience, Tama knows what drummers really want. Which is why, no matter how long you've been playing the drums, no matter what budget you have to work with, Tama has the set you need, want, and can afford. Every aspect of the modern drum kit was exhaustively examined and reexamined and then improved before it was accepted as part of the Imperialstar design. Which is why, if you start playing Imperialstar now as a beginner, you'll still enjoy playing it when you've achieved pro-status. That's how good these groundbreaking drums are.

Only Tama Imperialstar comes with a complete set of genuine Meinl HCS cymbals. These high-quality brass cymbals are made in Germany and are sonically matched so they sound great together. They are even lathed for a more refined tonal character. The set includes 14" hi-hats, 16" crash and an 20" ride cymbal.

Tama Drum Shells:100% poplar 6-ply/7.5mm
Poplar wood has been used in making drum shells for over 50 years. It offers a full, warm tone combined with medium attack.

Precise Bearing Edges
A drum's bearing edge is one of the most important components in drum sound. Tama's advanced edge-cutting process provides extremely precise bearing edges-which allow Tama shells to ring openly and fully, and provide a wide range of tuneability, sensitivity, and response.

100% Glued Finishes
Some drum companies only affix their wraps to the drum shell by taping the finish at "selected contact points." At Tama, all wrapped finishes are glued to the shell 100% to eliminate warping, buzzing, or lifting. This process allows the shell to resonate fully and consistently. It's more work, but Tama feels the extra effort is worth it, for a difference you can see and hear.

Original Small Lugs
Imperialstar lugs are 10% smaller than the lugs of Tama's previous Swingstar Series for even greater shell resonance.

Drum Heads
Batter-side heads are made of clear 250 microns-thick film for richer tone and greater durability. Ring mufflers on bass drum heads remove the need for additional internal muffling.

Accu-Tune Bass Drum Hoops
A special-formulation hi-tech material offers lighter weight and faster, more stable, tuning than traditional metal hoops. In addition, since Accu-Tune hoops use tension bolts instead of clawhooks and T-rods, head changes and packing up are a breeze.

Spur Brackets
Imperialstar spur bracket features the same look and style as Tama's high-end Starclassic drums and provides maximum durability and stability.

Tom Holder
Tama L-Rod and Omnisphere tom holder systems have received acclaim from drummers for over 25 years. These systems offer easy positioning, maximum flexibility, stability, and greater sound than standard designs which penetrate the shell interior and can inhibit resonance.

Tom Brackets
The eye-bolt structure is rock solid, holding the toms in place securely.

This is a very well made drum set. When paired with my preference of Evans and Aquarian heads and Sabian cymbals, this set is extremely versatile. Unfortunately, it came with a crack in the wrap on the bass drum. It also came with 2 10x13 toms. I bought a 9x12 and it sounds great. I will soon add an 8x10 tom and a 14x14 floor tom.

The drums and hardware are great - cymbals are horrible

I got what I expected - never thought the cymbals would be top of the line - and they are not

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

This is a perfect for someone that wants to upgrade from a beginner kit. I've owned this set for a couple of years and it's great for practice and live. These are the upgrades I made. I sold the cymbals that came with it and bought higher end cymbals that fit my style (rock). Replaced all of the top heads with Remo vintage and bottom heads with Remo Eclipse. I got a great sound and didn't spend a ton of money. I love these drums!

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

This is a fantastic kit for both starters and pros requiring a smaller setup. I bought this kit for my son when he was 8. He is still using it for certain situations. He now attends the Eastman School of Music and is using this kit at school.

The cymbals are not very good and will need upgrades. Putting good heads on this kit will make it sound amazing (Evans or Remo weather kings sound great).

The shell kit has held up extremely well over the years and I give it very very high marks.

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

A guitarist by trade, I've always wanted to learn drums properly -- other than messing around with the drummer's kit during breaks in band practice. This is my pre-midlife crisis.

This kit suits my needs perfect. I needed something entry-level, but something that wouldn't sound terrible and that I would grow out of quickly. New heads for the snare and bass drum have improved the sound dramatically (Evans G2 coated snare; Evans EMAD coated bass batter; Evans EMAD for resonant).

So the cymbals that come with -- not the best (and not the worst), but hey, what do you expect with the price? I ended up just adding an inexpensive Meinl HCS 18" crash to complete the setup.

My only complaint -- and this is good if this is my only beef -- is that the throne is basically useless. It is so hard to get it to stay in place height-wise, and I'm not a heavy guy. I would recommend a new throne ASAP. Otherwise, I have no issues with the hardware. The Iron Cobra pedal is a great inclusion.

Construction seems to be solid. I use a drumdial to tune it, and have no complaints there.

        Overall, it's a great value.

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

Overall a nice kit for the price. I replaced the beater heads and moved the Tama heads to the bottom/resonate. This made a huge difference for a minimal investment. The stock resonate heads are unbranded peices of plastic. The brass cymbals are throw away, but can be replaced one at a time with good quality bronze.

I bought this set for my 12 year-old son who has been playing percussion now for 1 year . I didn't want to buy a throw-away set, yet wanted something quality that a budding musician could grow into without breaking the bank. I took the advice of other reviewers and added upgraded heads (snare, kick, toms) along with the purchase. Glad I did. The cymbals are not brass, but sound great and can always be upgraded later. Quality hardware, full-sound, look and feel great. I can tell this set will be versatile for growth and will hold up for years to come!

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

I don't think there is a better drum kit for this price. The toms and bass drum are as good as the Tama Bubingas, the snare is okay but it is better than the Silver Star's snare drum. Thankfully there are less things to tune unlike what Pearl does and makes it harder to get the tone you want. The cymbals that come with it are obviously not the highest quality cymbals, but they do sound really good considering the alloy and how cheap they are (they do crack if you are a bit reckless). The stands that come for the cymbals are solid, the hi hat stand can be a bit funky and loosen up quickly though. The kick pedal is actually really good to begin with, although I would buy a new one playing after a year or so (definitely buy a speed cobra).
Buy this kit if you are starting or need a kit that sounds good for this price

Key to a drumset is getting it set up right and tuning your heads and replacing your heads based on use.
I've had the original drums heads on and have had Attack heads and Remo resonate heads (bottom heads need replacing too with batter heads, they affect the tone).
Currently have Aquarian batter heads and Remo resonate heads.

I was sent this kit a a gift and I must say that it was a pleasant surprise. I have played drums for 15 years now and my old kit (TAMA Starclassic Maple) was a bit beaten up. This Imperialstar has everything my old kit had and a bit more. I did have to change the heads as I wanted a deeper tone and less sustain, but that is a personal thing. I had never played on Meinl Cymbals before but I was surprised at the full rish sound of the hi-hats and the ride. The crash dose leave something to be desired, but I just moved it to the back of the kit after buying the 18" and 20" crash of the same series (HCS). Over all you can't go wrong for the price. This kit sounds every bit as good as my 15 year old Starclassic and I have even switched cymbal brands thanks to receiving this kit (used to play Paiste). Buy this kit, now before TAMA realises that they are selling this great kit for so cheep.

Comments about Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals:

I play in a 5-piece middle-of the road band and I find that these are quite adequate for the stuff we play. The hardware weighs as much as I do but is very sturdy. I like the look of them. I had a 7-piece Tama Royalstar Kit way back and liked them too.Very good for the price.
