Comments about Tama New Metalworks Snare Drum:
The sound of this drum compares or maybe surpasses that of any other metal snare there is in any price range!I've been playing for over 30 years and have played and tuned many snares.I can honestly say this was perhaps the easiest one I've ever tuned! I just had to decide on tensioning 'cause it sounded great at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere inbetween! The only thing negative was that it came fitted with tama heads which I immediately switched out for with evans.
Comments about Tama New Metalworks Snare Drum:
I now use this snare as my primary snare. It's no longer sitting on a snare stand to the left of my hats being used as a standard piccolo sound source.
This 4"x14" steel shell snare packs a pretty good punch. The tuning range is quite good, even with a 4" depth. I suggest a thicker batter head on this snare to eliminate the extra ring a steel shell snare of this size eminates. Plenty of "pop" with a coated emperor, coated powerstroke w/ center dot. If you want a good "crack" type sound in the piccolo range then simpley torque this baby up. It also sounds great with low to mid to torque ranges as well. The bottom head tensioning is the key as to how tight or how open (for lower tunings) you want the drum to sound. In my opinion, this snare, at a great price, suits all musical styles. Let it ring........and let it Sing!! Remember.....The type of batter head you choose is the key to taking advantage of this snare's sound. No muffling required, in my opinion, with a thicker or even 2 ply coated batter head.
I find the quality of this snare drum exceeds it's price range if you're looking for a cost effective 4"x14" steel shell snare drum. Great look to it as well.
Great value!!
