OVERVIEW

A retro-style snare drum with a sleek look and crisp sound for the new generation.

At first glance you can tell the 6 1/2"x13" Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum is no ordinary alloy steel snare drum. The black nickel-plated hardware and 1.2mm steel shell deliver a wide range of sound and, when tuned high, create a remarkable sharp and open tone. Overall, these features enable the drum to have a great high to low range.

At triple-flanged and 2.3mm thick, the Steel Mighty Drum Hoops further supports the departure from a typical "throw-in" steel snare drum. These hoops will provide a "wetter" sound than diecast zinc and will provide an articulate rimshot or accent, when needed. The Starclassic Carbon Steel Snappy Snares will also emphasize punch and attack, as needed.

FEATURES
  • 13 x 6-1/2" snare drum
  • 1.2mm Steel shell
  • Brushed Black Nickel plating with Chrome hardware
  • Steel Mighty Hoop
  • Hi-Tension Lug (10-count)

Comments about Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum:

I own almost every one of the SLP snares and this sonic steel is in my top 3! I originally purchased this as a recording option for my funkish sounding tracks with the ring from the steel but I was amazed with how it sounded after changing the head to a controlled sound coated black dot. Instantly it had a fatter, deeper crack and sounded great with rock ballads, indie, etc. the cs coated head is my absolute favorite for this drum and it records so beautifully with a standard sm57. For what this drum costs, you'd be foolish to not own one!

Comments about Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum:

I am in a diverse cover/original Reggae/Funk/Rock band playing songs from the 50's til today. I have been looking for the perfect snare for the type of music I play: I wanted something loud, "cold"er sounding, with great rimclicks and reggae-style rimshots. This is my fifth snare purchase and I finally found the right one!

This thing is very well-made, it feels solid and has a nice weight to it. The throwoff is sturdy and I have no issues with loosening snares. The lugs are nice and tight and don't loosen or fall off like other snares I have tried (cough...Ludwig...cough).

The one caviat I have is with the stock batter head. It's an Evans G1, which is fine, however there is too much coating on the head. After playing a couple of songs of mostly rim clicks the coating rubbed right off onto my stick tips, which then found its way onto the rest of my toms and cymbals. If you do many rimclicks I would recommend changing out the stock head ASAP.

For the price you simply can't go wrong. I have a feeling the rest of the snares in the SLP line are just as nice; I've been eyeing the Bubinga one next..

Do yourself a favor and give this snare a shot.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum:

I have been looking for a 13" snare for a while and almost purchased an expensive snare , but when I heard this snare it sounded great. It was exactly what was looking for. Sounds exactly like my 14" Ludwig metal snare from the 70s. It does have a little bit of overtones but with the proper tuning and a little muffling it sounds great.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum:

I've been playing drums over 35 years, always on a vintage Tama Superstar. I've been using a Yamaha deep snare for most that time. A hole finally rusted through it, so here comes the S.L.P. Wow! The smaller size fits me good with the double kicker and makes the throw from hi-hat to snare shorter than what it could be. It comes with Evans heads which I immediately swapped for Remo printed pinstripe. The "snap" is excellent and the response is fantastic. The natural volume of the drum is more than adequate for dry runs. I'm still waiting for my Shure mics to come in the mail, so I can't say how it records. I know there will be much success. The looks of this this drum are very attractive brilliant metallic tones with chrome hardware. An outstanding drum that will last forever if taken care of.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. Sonic Steel Snare Drum:

what a great snare. it has a lot of great features for the price. super hoop, nice throwoff. it's fairly heavy. i was a little dissappointed when i first got it, and was having a little difficulty finding it's tuning sweet spot. it was choking with the stock evans batter head. i changed the batter head to a remo coated ambassador, and experimented some more. perfect steel shell sound! ringy, but controlled. an absolutely skull splitting rimshot when tuned medium high. it likes the snare side tuned quite high. i have a nice collection of wood snares, but i needed something with more volume for a new project i'm working with, and this snare always generates some conversation. "wow, that snare is LOUD and CLEAR!" yup, it is. i love it. i may get some other snares in this line.
