Boasting the full, focused and versatile sound of 100% birch shells, the Tama Silverstar Jazz 4-piece kit gives drummers of all genres high-quality appointments and craftsmanship at a great price. To build the Silverstar series, Tama uses the same manufacturing process and techniques that they use to build their high-end drums. The result is a kit that exhibits powerful rich tone and resonance found in more expensive drums.
Its high-end features include hardened steel triple-flanged hoops and an improved Star-Mount suspension system with slideable tom holder that makes finding the right setup easier than ever. The kit's redesigned Star-Mount System also allows the drums to resonate more freely and naturally. Four minimal contact points suspend the drum without touching the shell and provide maximum tone. Silverstar drums also feature redesigned separate lugs. Because these new lugs make less contact with the surface of the shell, they allow the drums to vibrate more naturally.

As a past/present owner of nearly every line of drums Tama has put out, I can tell you that this is a great kit and an incredible bargain. The all-birch shells are a standout in this price range, as is the shell hardware and finish (nice lacquer, albeit not as "glass-smooth" as their higher-end finishes). The kit sounds great. The bass drum especially is a stunner, even with the stock heads. I removed the pedal riser, as it placed the pedal too far away from the drum for my taste, and I was going for a classic bop sound anyway- but the riser is solid and does its job well, especially if you want a beefier rock sound. I ended up putting Tama die-cast hoops on the toms and snare. The toms sounded pretty good without them, but do sound better with the die-casts. The improvement on the snare was quite noticeable. I wish Tama would put better hoops on at least the snare drums for the Silverstars; even their 2.3mm Mighty Hoops would likely do the trick. The strainer and butt are high-quality (same as the Superstar parts) and the drum sounds good- great with upgraded heads. (I recommend an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot.) Speaking of heads, the stock tom heads were decent; definitely usable in a jazz/bop context. You'll likely want thicker batter heads for a powerful rock sound (which these birch shells can definitely produce!) Overall, I am definitely happy with this kit, and will be buying an add-on 10" soon. I would (and have!) recommended this kit to basically anyone looking for great drums at a bang-for-the-buck price.

This is the best set you could get for the money, all birch shells, fine bearing edges, beautiful finishes(I love the satin cherry), strong hadware, 8 bass drum lugs, great sound. The bass drum riser is very good, also the tom suspension. Tama did a perfect job with this kit, I had the Sonor Bop before but is a cheap set that I wouldn't recommend it. Go for this Silverstar over the Catalinas, Sonor Bops, Yamaha Bops, Mapex HZB Big City. You won't be dissapointed! I'm using mine to play rock with a Remo Powersonic on bass drum and Remo Emperor Vintage coated on the toms, this is not a jazz kit only, it rocks!!
