A new spin and feel on classic snare drum design.
By mounting innovative Starphonic hardware on a 1mm thick brass shell, Tama is able to offer top-of-the-line snare drum sound at an affordable price. At the cost of an intermediate model, the Starphonic Steel Snare provides a warm, solid sound and a great sensitivity.
Tama's continued development of the Starphonic line led them to develop an entirely new "Grooved Hoop" and a bearing edge placement set 2.5mm from the outer surface of shell. Also, the all-new Freedom Lug and Claw Hook will provide greater control of tension rods and tuning, while partnering with the easily-detachable butt plate to enable quick replacement of worn top and bottom drumheads. These innovations have enabled the drum to have a great high to low range.
Other features of this drum include a Linear Drive strainer - which enables a greater control of the strainer's deployment motion. On the snare side of the drum, an and "Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Snappy Snare" will emphasize needed attack, but also limit the amount of effort needed to control the tension on your snares.

Comments about Tama Starphonic 1.0mm Steel Snare:
This is a fantastic drum at this price point. All that needs be done, like most drums, is get the correct batter head on it. I ended up going with an Evans EC1 Reverse Dot after a total fail with my usual go-to - Evans Genera Dry HD. This thing has a beautiful combination of sensitivity and shotgun pop with terrific response for a 7 inch deep drum. As to be expected, the Starphonic series avails itself of all of Tama's best engineering and manufacturing practices in an aesthetically pleasing package at a reasonable, mid-range price. This drum is no exception. It has a cool, classy and potentially deadly appearance despite its downsize and with a sonic output to match. Great tuning range, surprisingly little metallic overtone, great projection and clarity. If at all possible, get yourself into a situation where you can try this drum out. I don't consider it a genre-specific instrument at all. Regardless of your style, I know you're bound to recognize its qualities. If you take the plunge, the only thing that might concern you aside from head choices is you might end up wanting to change out the snare wires. In the meanwhile, I strongly suggest: do not choke, mute or crank up the strainer. Start out on a medium tuning and whether you go up or down from there, let it breathe! This pony will get it done for you in style.
