OVERVIEW

The portable kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit.

The A400 from Traps Drums is a portable drum kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit. The drums are constructed from high-quality, durable A.B.S. and are fitted with Remo heads, steel counter hoops, and are tuned with the traditional multi-screw tuning system. This also allows the use of pads for silent practicing. The rack system that the drums and hardware fit to is made from substantial steel tubing which means that everything stays exactly where it's put when the kit is set up and doesn't move.

Geoff Nicholls of Rhythm Magazine asked in 2005: "Can a shell-less kit ever stand in for the real thing?" He concluded: "Shell-less kits are a viable alternative and Traps A400 is easily the best so far."

Rack system
The A400 rack-mounting system is made from sturdy large-diameter chromed steel tubing. The kit can easily be set up for either left- or right-handed players using the supplied tough ABS multifunctional joints.

When set up, the rack is very strong and, once fitted with the supplied four large rubber feet, stays where it's placed and doesn't move. This provides a noticeable improvement in playability compared to other portable drum sets in this price bracket.

Top Quality Hardware
The A400 comes fitted with quality hardware as standard. This includes hi-hat and kick drum pedals that are both rugged and free moving. Also included is a snare basket, boom cymbal arms (which can be slid into the frame for easy storage).

The hardware is both reliable and distinctive with black-painted footplates and a "Traps" embossed seat squab. They also feature quality chain drives, memory locks, expansion springs and clutches.

12" snare drum
The A400 12" snare drum has a very crisp sound as a result of the high-quality ABS molding combined with the chrome-plated steel counter hoops, Remo Ambassador heads, and 8 square-headed tension screws. This all results in a snare that's easy to tune and capable of cutting rim shots and thick X-stick sounds. The drum also features a sturdy throw-off with a positive feel and a knob at the opposite side of the drum for adjusting the stretch in the snares. This means that the A400 snare has the additional ability to produce Latin/world percussion sounds or to function as an additional tom.

10", 12", and 14" toms
The A400 toms are manufactured from a tough ABS molding which is further strengthened by a triple-flange counter hoop, then to complete the toms, they are fitted with top-quality Remo Pinstripe heads. As with all the A400 drums, an industry-standard multi-screw tuning system is used.

All this attention to detail results in a quality sound never before heard in a portable kit.

20" kick drum
The A400 20" kick drum is an uncompromising double-headed design fitted with a UT Powerstroke 3 drumhead on the back and Remo Ebony drumhead on the front printed with the Traps logo. It is also fitted with chrome-plated steel hoops.

Its shell is made from a robust high-quality injection-molded A.B.S. fitted with custom dual-mounting points ideally suited to mounting in the A400 rack mount system. A strong metal plate is fitted to bottom of the rear counter hoop so that when the kick pedal is fitted, the beater strikes the head at the optimum position--top of the upstroke.

Cymbals not included.

Very nice set overall. Meets my needs exactly, which is to have a compact set to have for tight location gigs, and an auxiliary set to practice on away from the main part of the house when others are about. Sound quality is mostly great - I especially like the snare. The toms do the job. The bass is lacking some - I'm still working to see if tuning differently will make help much, but I'm concluding there's no substitute for a full sized bass.
Very complete for what I need. A little cramped in the that cymbals end up being a little closer than I'd like, but hey, I got it so I could fit in small spaces, so not such a big deal.
Lots of plastic parts on the drums, but so far not an issue - seems to be very sturdy. I'm impressed with the metal hardware that forms the basis for holding the kit together - extremely sturdy. Went together without issue.
Price was right for the quality of what you get. Would have liked to have more cymbal options available. Will usually take my "main" cymbals from my permanent set to gigs, but want another set to go with these for practicing in the basement where these are set up (away from my regular music/practice room). Will probably end up spending half of what I spent on the Traps to get decent cymbals.

I had initially given this a great review, then a good review. Now a month later, my advice is stay away. The portability concept is great - there's nothing out there like it. The downside is, parts on no available. If something goes wrong you have to swap out the ENTIRE KIT for another one. And what could go wrong? What went wrong in my case was that the plastic "shell" cracked at two of the tuning lugs on the 12" tom. MF was great to work with "Just return it, and you can order another one." Well, I've done the first part for sure, but I WILL NOT be ordering another one. A hint for any budding entrepreneurs out there: If you took this concept and made the drum "shells" out of cast aluminum or military grade plastic (such as they use on military rifles), I think every gigging drummer would own one.

Small improvements-big difference

By Behind-the-Groove

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

The snare has a nasty ring but a strategically placed moongel does the trick--loosen the snare wires for a "fatter" sound. Loosen the heads on the toms all the way and then tighten the screws up one by one just enuff to feel tension. The bass is the most challenging to get a decent sound--invest in the Remo Muffl ring and attach it to the batter head--DON'T put anything inside. Again, tighten the batter head just enuff to feel tension...tighten the resonant (black) head slightly more than the batter. Use 2 Moongels on the res head--one on either side.

Great portable kit for jamming

By mel-HA3mY

from San Antonio, TX

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

This kit is ideal for someone who wants a light, portable kit for jamming; it's very easy to assemble. Just beware that the brackets incorporate a lot of plastic, not meant for harsh treatment. As far as sound, the toms sound just fine with the provided heads. The bass drum sounds alright, but I'm replacing it with a different head with a port hole. The snare sounds very harsh, and I'll probably use it as an accessory rather than as my main snare. I am replacing all the heads to achieve a darker sound. The hi hat stand is acceptable, but does not use pads for the cymbals. Regarding cymbals, it's best to find some on your own, based on your own personal preference.Overall, the rack, toms and bass are perfectly acceptable, and I'm complementing it with a different hi hat stand, snare, drum heads, and bass drum pedal. Again, this is great for jamming because it's light and portable. I'm not sure about large gigs; the plastic in the brackets would make me hesitate to use it for more harsh conditions.

Traps drums, a versatile tool

By PHD

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I use the Traps drums when space is limited or the load in is a bear. Good quality, expecally the rack. If you know what you're doing , they can sound pretty good out of the box. If you know how to tweak and tune, they can sound really good. Rack is compatable with Gibraltar if you want to add cymbals, etc. Great customer service from the distributor. A great addition to my percussion arsenal.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

When I saw a band play in a really small bar and the drummer had this kit tucked up in a corner and didn't take up any space, I was blown away! They sounded like drums. The only way to take up less space is to stand up. That's the real reason why I bought this kit. And no, don't expect these to outperform drums with shells. But if your looking for something different and space saving, here you go! Remember, you can always mic up, EQ and even trigger this kit to sound like whatever you want. Just like anything else.

Awsome

By Jimbo6661

from Columbus, GA

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I have always wanted to learn how to play drums. I am in the military so having a set that is portable and can be made silent (with the E400 kit) is awesome. This set is everything that I could have hoped for. If you are a professional musician that makes his living playing music, than this is probably not the set for you. If you like to get together with your friends and jam, or just want to learn to play than this is the set for you. I looked into a ton of electronic kits but the problem with them is that the pads are too small or they are way too expensive. For me that can?t be beat. On a side note, I have also figured out how to patch in the drum brain, and I can now use this set to play both rock band and guitar hero. It beats playing with the metronome all the time.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I have it. Used it at gigs. I replaced the snare. Cymbals. The built in cymbal stands offer limited options regarding placement. Kick sounds pretty bad miked. I use a metal beater pad and a piece of duck tape near the rim and it's ok live. It's fine naked at practice. It sounds remarkable. The hardware is pretty tough. On and off the stage so quick you'll never go back

They have their place

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

If you are tight for space you might like these. They set-up fast too. Volume-wise, I would say is 80 to 90% of a shell kit. You`ll save on stands for sure. The downside is that when you remove the shell from a drum, you lose the beefy tone and quality that shells bring. It you are not fussy, you can do fine with these. I`m fussy and so are my band mates. They are good for band practice but would need some processing from mics or triggers. Note that a ddrum trigger will not work on this snare. A Roland will work. It`s because the rim plate is too large. The hi hat stand is fine, but the kick pedal is not long enough for my foot [size 11]. Don`t get the cymbals of course. I made an error in judgement in getting these, but I`m going to use the rack, snare and hi hat stand. The snare is fine. P.S. the drums sound flappy without shells and lack depth of tone. For me, it was a mistake getting these but I can see where some people would be OK with them.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

This is a really nice drum set for beginners and intermediates. The snare has a nice sharp crack, but the toms ring a bit too much and the floor tom resists good sound no matter how hard i tune it. The cymbals bend after about 6 months. And it is really hard to build on the kit, but perfect for beginners. All in all, an okay set

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

Bought this for my school band because it appeared light and easy to move. That is the case.....but it came with a broken part. That wasn't the end. Every few weeks or so something else (mostly the plastic parts) break off and can not be used. We can only have one cymbal mounted on the rack and the snare attachment broke off. We mounted the snare on a traditional stand, but a month or so later the snare control broke off. Not worth this much money. It's worth only about half the money it sells for.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I believe it to be A great Set, but the way its packaged and shipped is poorly done. I ordered the kit twice and on both deliveries the tension clamp on the snare was broken. So after receiving it the second time I didn't return it, I simply repaired it with Gorilla Glue. I do think they need to redesign the tension clamp to a better quality alloy and not plastic, simple because of the stress on the snares.

Traps A400 is all the kit without all the hassle.

    By Drumdumdan

    from Caldwell, Idaho

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I originally bought the A400 kit as a solution to not having enough room for a regular sized kit. The kit fits nicely with plenty of room to spare. I also did my homework before making the purchase and found that the quality is as good as they say. Putting the kit together took some time but was well worth the effort. The kit doesn?t budge or slide anywhere. This kit makes for a quick set up and take down, for gigs or if you just want to make more room. The sound of the kit is more than expected, especially with the toms. Having a traditional snare basket give you the option of switching out snares for desired play and sound. adjusting the toms and cymbals is easy. As for looks, this kit is all chromed out and looks good in any setting. My advice is, if your looking for a versatile kit for gigs or looks, the Traps A400 is a great investment.

Decent entry level kit for portability

    By The Dave-ZrHqq

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

The very excellent reviews for this product are a bit lofty. Of course, this depends on who is buying the kit. For an entry-level drummer or novice, it's a pretty decent deal. Considering all of the hardware and the ease of use, it's a great little gigging set.If you are a mid-level drummer or professional, you will probably not really like this set too much. I am personally used to high end sets, such as Truth and 80665 drums, and this of course can not come close to that sound. So, when you're used to something nice, and then you sit down behind these, you keep tweaking and adjusting, thinking it can get a better, but it cannot. I have spent about a week with the set. I am still deliberating about whether to send it back or not. The main attraction for me is when I play out for a small gig, or if the weather is severe (or any other opportunity for damage to drums), I like the idea of just grabbing these and going. Most of the crowd will not even think about the drums.Oh, and these are fairly heavy, not the easiest to move around!

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

A super portable kit that once you get the memory locks in place (which takes a little time to set up) it's easy to set up and tear down. I got this kit since I have to fly to Nevis, and island in the carribean to gig for 2 weeks. it packs easily into a duffle bag for the hardware, and a larger bag for the drums and cymbals. The toms are surprisingly punchy and have pretty good tone. They cut through the mix pretty well. The snare is only a 12" so there isn't much body to the snare... very high-endy...The kick is the trickiest to tune, maybe an Evans or Aquarian bass head will solve that problem.Overall, this kit is solid, and surprises a lot of listeners who can't believe that it makes the good sound it does. Pretty impressed with this purchase so far. Did not need the cymbal package, and they are pretty cheap anyway!

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I purchased this drum set due to my lack of space in my bedroom. I was assuming that the lack of space this set takes up would result in lack of quality and/or good sound. I was greatly mistaken. Each part of this set is crafted with care and you can tell each piece is sturdy and well-made.As for sound, I think it sounds just like a real drumset. I had trouble tuning the snare (but I'm somewhat new to drumming) They include a number and I got to talk to the head of Traps drums and he helped me walk through it!!! Every drum sounds great however I recommend maybe getting a new bass drum head, but the stock one is good if you can tune it properly.Overall, this is a buy that a musician would not be disappointed with, from a seasoned pro that has to travel, to a beginning player who wants some extra space.Thank you Traps!!

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I have this set and I have tried using it on a few jobs and find it lacking in projection, tone and limited setup. That said, mics and ingenuity can solve most of the problems. Contact pickups don't seem to work very well. I usually play my kits with the rack toms to the left of my Bass drum. The Traps rack has very few options for placement of the Toms. I placed the Bass drum on a mini set of legs and mounted the Rack toms on a double tom floor stand. I mounted the Floor tom to my Ride cymbal stand, using a Yamaha Tom Mount and a clamp. This setup works for me and is quite portable. All I have to carry is the four Traps drums, Double Tom stand with a built in Cymbal stand, one Cymbal stand, Hi Hat stand and a Lightweight Snare stand. I tried four sets of heads and settled on the Evans EC2 heads. Be warned, very few Bass drum heads will fit into the collar of the metal Bass drum rims. Some Aquarian and Evans EMad heads fit. Take the Bass drum rim with you when you go looking for heads. Two of the Snare drum tuning screws broke and I had to drill out and re tap the mount(please don't do this unless you know how to do it). I do like the idea of portability but the rack doesn't work for me. Love the Snare Drum. I use the Traps for practice and for those small room gigs. The Plastic shells and hardware on the set that I have are of good quality. Like any hardware, don't abuse it. Use your imagination and these Drums will serve you well.
