This product works very if you have average intelligence and can READ instructions. For years I have tuned by ear and still do in most cases, however the Tunebot works very well at dialing in a close tuning if you tune to a specific pitch. I play DW Collectors drums and each shell is stamped with a resonance pitch. I tune very close to what DW recommends and usually by 3rds depending on the key of the majority of songs I'm playing to. For the folks who have problems with using this device I would suggest (1) reading the instructions and follow each step exactly. (2) buying new drumheads (3) buying a drumkit that actually produces a percussive sound and tone or (4) start playing guitar. The Tunebot is not meant to replace your ears, but will put you in the ballpark relatively quickly and EASILY if you follow instructions. I will agree that it does produce some erroneous readings from time to time, but commonsense adjustments with the unit should remedy most of these. Using this, I've been able to completely retune a 5 piece kit in under an hr. It works far better than a drum dial or torque key. One of the most useful drum tuning products to come along ever. It will not replace your ears, but it will get you closer to where you want to be much quicker than any other method out there.

I bought this product out of curiosity more than anything. And I got sucked in because I like new tech. I was interested to see what musical notes some of my drums represented (to see if those shell frequencies stamped inside my drums actually meant something meaningful... They don't BTW). Now I feel ashamed that I was taken for a ride. It was a mistake. Ah, but there are no mistakes in life, just lessons...

As a practical and easy tuning device, this product is a waste of money. It has a hard time zeroing in on frequencies. It is easily affected by overtones, even with the filter. It doesn't work well on bass drums or snare-side heads especially, and you will not be able to use it in any type of noisy environment, like backstage, or if you have to change a head between sets. The Tune-Bot takes something very simple and makes it very, very complicated. It applies too much science, where science is just not necessary. We are tuning drums here, not flying the Space Shuttle.

Drums are not perfect pitch instruments, they are made of wood (a non-perfect, natural material), with polyester film stretched over them. So what if one lug is 5 Hz lower than another? If the drum sounds good, why over manage it? It will just make you nuts.

I've been playing drums for over 35 years. I'll share some simple, friendly advice to those of you less experienced: Learn to tune by ear and feel, and trust your ears. It's not as complicated as all the voodoo you see on the internet, or as all the folks with miracle tuning devices (like this one) make it out to be. The only tool you need is a drum key. Tuning is not that hard. And with just a little practice you can get really good at it, and get great drum sounds. No mathematical formulas, pitch measurements, filters, ratios, charts, etc. You shouldn't need a calculator to tune your drums!

Honestly, save your money and buy something you really need, or something to add to your kit to make more music. There is a lot of cool drum and percussion gear worth your hard-earned money. The Tune-Bot is not.

I learned how to tune my entire kit by ear when I started playing over 20 years ago and I am glad I did. This is a great tool, but it takes away the drummers ear. I remember spending 15 - 20 minutes tuning my kit before each gig and each practice. At the time, I didn't realize it but spending all of that time with kit I really got to know my kit and the personality of my drumset. While this is great to use in a pinch to get everything tuned up fast, please also spend the time to tune by ear, you'll learn your kit and you'll have a unique sound to you.

This is an awesome product. Took some time to fully understand it, but now it has become essential. I recommend watching Michael Johnston vid on how to use it. Got my recommended frequencies via the website. You can adjust sustain, pitch etc to your preferences. I then put it what it suggested and it's absolutely perfect. Was great for recording. Engineers often struggle trying to get consistent drum sound between tracks, but a quick tune before the session and you sound just like when you started. Great for live application too. I don't even use moongels anymore cause it sounds perfect. So happy I bought this. Buy it immediately.

After 10 yrs drumming, you want the best sound, YOUR sound. This isn't a set it right quick and forget it tuner. But together with your ears it's a slammin' combination. First you get fundamental pitch of each drum to build on. Above all be very patient and you will be rewarded with 3 essential sounds, full resonant, note bend, and high attack lower resonance. The mistake most are making is lugs only need tiny tweaks, as in 1/16 to 1/8 lug turns or less when matching lug frequencies. This is serious gear and gets you 90% there, throw in your ears and it teaches so much about tuning each drum in YOUR kit and sound you want. Highly recommended~!

When I first purchased this I was a little nervous that it would be too "Techy" and hard to figure out, but as soon as I turned it on and hooked it up to my drums, I was literally done tuning them (perfectly) within minutes. (tuning drums by ear is quite time consuming.) The TuneBot is very easy to use, and now I cant even imagine having to tune my drums by ear, or even use a Drum Dial ever again.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

This thing works. I have constant ringing in my ears from my time in the military. So it is hard for me to pick out small differences in tone. So for me I can get a drum tuned much more quickly with a tunebot. Is it necessary for everyone? No. Do some of us need it? Yes. Am I embarrassed about needing it? No.
Yes it can have issues with snare side heads especially if your snare bed is extra deep or narrow. But if for some reason you cannot get this thing to zero in on a frequency or you have trouble getting the head at each lug to the same frequency, you have one of three problems. 1) Your bearing edge is not perpenidular to the shell of your drum. Take off your head and hoops, place the bearing edge on a flat surface and if a carpenter square or other device to guage a 90 degree angle doesn't line up perfectly to the shell all the way around, the tunebot will have troubles. (but then so does your drum). 2) Your drum is not perfectly round. 3) there is too much other noise going on in the room.
In essence this thing is a small computer. Garbage in = Garbage out. I am confident that most problems with this thing are user error. Once you get over the learning curve and understand how to get it working you will appreciate it.
One tip, if you are having issues with getting consistent readings, try holding the tune bot above the center of the drum as you tap around the head. Sometimes leaving it clipped to the head in one place does not work.

Comments about Tune-bot Electronic Drum Tuner:

Yes you can tune by ear; however, you will not be 100% accurate. I don't care what you say. There is no way you are achieving identical pitch at each lug by ear. If you want your drums tuned to notes and in intervals of your choice(perfect fifths, etc.) this tool is for you. It is going to take a little bit of time to read the instructions and watch a couple Youtube videos on how to use the Tunebot but it is time worth spending. You can also accurately tune top and bottom heads and pitch bend for better attack (I always hated tuning by ear because as you tune the bottom head it throws the top head off a little bit and then each lug will throw off other lugs as you are tuning around the drum. The Tunebot gives you an easy way to measure the pitch at each lug to take the guessing game out of tuning. The tunebot website also gives you fundamental pitch measurements and then lug pitches for each size drum in your kit. I've used the torque keys and those are good to get even tension on the lowest setting before you use the tunebot, but that's about it. THE TUNEBOT IS THE REAL DEAL. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED PURCHASING THIS. Only CON is the interface needs to be more user friendly or just make an IPHONE APP I can purchase.
