Vater

A light weight stick that will sweeten up your chops.

Educator Mike Johnston's 2451 is a great all-around design that can be used in any musical style. It has a grip size between a 5A and 5B with a gradual taper to a barrel tip for ride cymbal definition, as well as a fantastically quick feel around the kit.

The Sugar Maple version of the 2451 is perfect for lower volume and lesson room type settings.

"The 2451 is the stick I have dreamed about my whole career. This stick feels amazing in my hand and even better on the kit!"
—Mike Johnston

Mike Johnston began studying the drums at the age of 5. He spent the next 15 years studying privately with some of the greatest educator/drummers of our time including Pete Magadini, Steve Ferrone, and Aaron Smith.

At the age of 21 Mike received his first major label record deal with his band Simon Says (Hollywood Records) and spent the next 5 years touring the world. He received a gold record for his contributions to the Varsity Blues soundtrack and has appeared on The Late Show with Dave Letterman as well as on MTV's Fashionably Loud. Mike has also toured with Warner Bothers Recording artists FILTER.

Vater Mike Johnston 2451 Sugar Maple Drumsticks

This is a really good quality stick. I have used everything from zildjian to promark sticks and they all seem to break way too easy. These maple sticks by vater hold up better than any other. I also really love the tip. Sort of like a small half moon shape. Great ride stick, especially for jazz or anything really. If you have not tried these sticks I would suggest you order a pair and try them out

They cost slightly more than most hickory sticks, but they are well worth it.

Vater and Mike hit a home run with these sticks (2451 sugar maple).  I play drum in church (hillsong style of worship) and teach lessons during the week.  I have finally found a stick that is lighter but still feels perfect in my hands making drumming feel even more natural.  Highly recommend the 2451 maple for you church drummers and instructors.  Plus their is an added bonus!  You can get the same stick in Hickory.  Perfect for when I'm sitting in with the local bands and need that extra durability for a little extra SLAP-N-POP, without loosing the naturally comfortable feel.  THESE ARE A MUST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!

I have both models of the stick, having seen MJ advertise them on his site. I practice with the hickory sticks, and their balance is great. These sticks made me give up the previous stick I had been using for years (Weckyl Evos). When I use these maple sticks, everything is effortless due to the weight difference, and I get the same feel of balance. They're fantstic sticks.

Great Sticks, I've been playing drums since the early 70's and used a lot of different sticks. These have great balance and feeling. They are similar to the Vic Firth Steve Gadd signature sticks. The 2451's are lighter, have better balance, are a little longer and slightly thicker. These are too light for a hard rock gig but are fantastic for speed and touch.

This stick is built for the everyday drummer. It's got a very comfortable feel to it and perfect balance. I love that it's between a 5A and 5B grip! The shoulder is a little thicker than my current stick which I like because I break a lot of sticks in that area hitting the cymbals or when I'm doing more shallow rim shots. Another great thing about this stick is that you can buy it in Hickory or Maple. This is huge because when I'm playing lighter I can use the maple or when I gotta bring the heat and play harder I can use the hickory and not worry about the stick breaking easily. To have your favorite stick in both woods is a big plus because you don't have to change the feel and fit your comfortable with just because you need a little less or more weight on the stick. I also like the half barrel tip because they feel and sound great on the cymbals but don't dent your heads like round tips do. I definitely recommend this stick for any drummer, you won't be disappointed.
