I have returned to amateur drumming after a brief stint as a boy snare drummer in the 1960s. Back then we used Ludwig sticks, big fat #6B to practice and #2A to perform. My Vic Firth AJ3 sticks are excellent in every way, and are well matched as they produce exactly the same pitch when striking the drum. 100% quality control. I'm still a fairly lame drummer, but have my moments with Vic Firth!

not as good as the old 8D

the shank has been thinned down (too much) from the old 8D, which had a perfect weight and felt like they 'played themselves'. these are just too light to the tip.

Comments about Vic Firth American Jazz Hickory Drumsticks:

I'm still using these and like them. The other sticks I use are the Regal Tip Combos and Zildjian 7As. The Combos measure .475" in diameter and are great for jazz. The Z 7A's measure .525" diameter and are the biggest stick I need to use. The Firth 5AJs are a perfect in-between at .490". My only beef with them is that Firth doesn't make them with a nylon tip. Being hickory, the stick plays really well, but the tip splinters quickly on cymbals and for that reason they don't last long. Great sticks, minus one star for not making a nylon tip version. IF ANYONE READING THIS KNOWS OF A HICKORY STICK THAT MEASURES .490" - .510" WITH A NYLON TIP, PLEASE RESPOND AND LET ME KNOW ABOUT IT.

I wanted a stick with a light weight and small head for playing quietly in jazz combos. These fit the bill quite nicely. I usually prefer plastic tips but for playing small venues as background they work fine. I like their balance.

Comments about Vic Firth American Jazz Hickory Drumsticks:

I have been playing for 6 years and just recently decided to try the American Jazz drumsticks. They are my favorite pair of drumsticks thus far. I'm yet to find a stick that sounds as good as these all around the drums. It gets a great sound from all of the cymbals especially my ride. These drumsticks last a really long time and are very affordable. I would recommend these sticks to any jazz drummer from novice to professional.

I find these sticks to be perfect in a trio setting behind a vocalist. They have excellent stick definition on the cymbals, and they have the heft that I want in a stick.

                          (AJ2)

These are great for fast swing and other styles that require quick rebound and a light(ish) touch. The AJ2 are comparable to standard 5As with a longer taper giving them the quicker response. These still have a thicker butt so rim clicks are as strong as with a regular stick.

These make a positive difference with quick ride work when compared to VF normal 5As but you do lose a little bit of power and presumably some durability if you are shoulder crashing cymbals all the time.

I was looking for something thinner than a 5A to play a bit more quietly. These accomplished that, but unexpectly, they made each note on the toms more clear, and the drums sound more open. FYI, the toms were 10, 12, and a 14 floor using Evans coated G12s. The only thing that takes a little getting used to is that the sticks are thin enough that they "give" a little when hitting the heads, but you adjust quickly. If you want a more distinct, open sound on coated heads, give these a try.

For jazz combo work, these are superb sticks. They have a thin diameter with a fine taper that offers a light touch. They are perfectly balanced for playing with precision. I've tried 3 other major brands of jazz stick, but the Vic Firth AJ5 is now my go to stick. If you're a jazzer, I can highly recommend trying these great sticks.

These are much easier on the cymbals and drum heads. Wanted some very light sticks for practice and lower volume as well. Getting older and don't want LOUD volume. I also like to play with radio and MP3. These don't drown out the sound. Also don't annoy the neighbors and wife as much. They seem to roll easier too. Most affordable light sticks on the net!
