OVERVIEW

A perfect pair for jazz and small combos.

Vic Firth SD7 Whacker Drum Sticks are part of the American Custom line conceived and engineered by performer and teacher Vic Firth. The first manufacturer to apply the concept of a round striking surface to drumstick design, Vic, developed the other original sticks that complete the line with jazz players in mind.

Turned from select rock maple for a light, fast-playing drumstick with great flex and rebound, the SD7 Whacker is a perfect stick for drummers who play jazz or in a small combo. The Vic Firth SD7 Whacker has a nylon tip for great cutting power on cymbals.

Comments about Vic Firth SD7 Whacker Drum Sticks:

These are my go to stick for anything that isn't non-stop all night hard hitting (Buddy Rich nylons or SD1's for those gigs). Most gigs I do are light jazz, latin, and mellow stuff early on then calypso, cuban, fusion and rock as the gig goes into the evening. Lighter stick weight-wise, but fair girth on the shaft allows more control for me personally as I do most of my pad work with SD1's. Also a fairly rigid stick, meaning not a lot of flex, it's not a thin hardwood stick and will not feel like one, but at the same time it won't shock the nerves in your hand every time you do a rim shot. Good bounce off the cymbals. I see a lot of reviews on these breaking or cracking within hours or minutes, not a stick for those who have novice Moeller technique much less none at all. If you bash and are tight gripped then yes, you'll break these. Please know my intention is not to insult those who don't feel like investing several months to reform their technique, but if you're a recreational user and never refined your technique, you'll love these for about 8 minutes.I have SD7s from years ago that have been through many gigs and practices, when they break, they break at the tip, rarely down the shaft.

Comments about Vic Firth SD7 Whacker Drum Sticks:

Okay, these are fantastic sticks, but you have to understand one thing. They are as thick as 2Bs but as light as 7As. In order for this to work, Vic Firth uses a very light wood. Since light wood is already breakable, the durability will of these sticks will depend entirely on what section of the tree they come from. Yes, they will break more easily than regular sticks, but the sound and feel that they provide is too good to pass up; rather, buy two or three pairs at a time so that you can always have replacements. Bottom line: If you are looking for the perfect stick and aren't too concerned about cost (honestly, they're only like a buck more than the average kind), this is the stick for you. If you're on a budget, you should still buy a pair, because they're absolutely amazing!

Comments about Vic Firth SD7 Whacker Drum Sticks:

Went to the local music store, and saw these sticks, took them home, and after an hour of playing, they broke. Wasn't hitting hard, or anything crazy. They are comfortable and sound nice, but wow. Would not buy again.
