Check out Yamaha's DTX400 series of electronic drum kits!

The DTX400 series electronic drums bring Yamaha quality and technology to a new level of affordability. The DTX400K is powered by the DTX400 module that features 169 professional acoustic drum and percussion sounds with Accent Articulation for dynamic expression. Play along to 10 songs and customize 10 kits to match your style. Or practice with interactive training functions featuring Voice Guidance.

The pads feature oversized 10" ride, hi-hat and crash cymbals, while the 7" drum pads have been redesigned for greater playability, authenticity and durability. As far as hardware goes, the DTX400K includes a real Yamaha bass drum pedal and a KU100 kick unit that provides an authentic kick drum feel. The remote HH65 hi-hat controller pedal allows “half-open” hi-hat sounds for expression usually found on much higher priced kits. A steel rack delivers a solid framework for your playing experience.

Comments about Yamaha DTX400K Electronic Drum Set:

Great kit for the money. Very good tones, durability and sensitivity. Rim shots and cymbal bells make for cool features for a kit in this price range. The Yamaha app allows vast customization for any combination of sounds you could want. The training aids and songs can improve even an experienced drummers tightness and timing. Very quiet pads with a great feel that are very responsive are nice as well.

The only downsides are the cymbals not having the ability to be muted. This can be expected from a kit in this price range. Cymbal bell playing can also be a tad difficult and sometimes can only be achieved by hitting the bell rather hard. The other flaw is the pedals are overly sensitive. The hi hat pedal will open up even with your foot firmly on it. When you use the hi hat pedal as a double bass pedal, the sensitivity an loudness between the two pedals is fairly dramatic. These are two minor flaws on an otherwise great durable kit.

Comments about Yamaha DTX400K Electronic Drum Set:

Let me start with the positives. The quality is good and the programmed drum setting 1 sounds good. Jazz setting 7 isn't bad either. Drum pads feel good and the kit is compact so it fits in well. Hitting the cymbals is nice too. Empty cymbal back contributes to that feel. It only weighs 40 pounds potentially shipping it isn't as much of a nightmare as some competitive models from other manufacturers. Box size is compact too.

Now let me comment with things that are so so. Don't seem to find the right open high hat setting. Snare is too close to the hi hat. Headphone wire seems to always be in the way (I adjusted module position with Yamaha recommendation video) K65 bass pad accessory leans slightly forward. 7 inch pads are what they are. 9-10 should be the minimum in my opinion. Only a couple electronic kits sound good enough. Wires are compact and mostly out of the way. Stock KU100 bass pedal is ok for silent use (will never replace a real pedal in my opinion).

Now the negatives. Snare connecting bar joint is always loose no matter how tight the wing nut is. Hit it a couple times and it's pointing straight down. I have an email into Yamaha yesterday and still waiting a response.

But it's still 2x better and costs 1/2 as much as an Alesis DM10.

It's a good bargain and I can't have a real drum set in my studio or I will drive people crazy. I hooked it up to Reaper and Addictive Drums so it records very nicely. And I enjoy practicing with it even though I have to find a solution to the loose snare drum which is very distracting at the moment. For now it's doing the job. If they dropped the price to 350 it would probably be ok. You can't say it's a professional drum kit. Pads are ok but not mesh. Rubber pads are what they are.

For now it gets a 4 rating (I will hold off giving it a 3 rating since there's potentially a solution for the loose snare).

Real drums electronic or not start at 3x as much so I can't be too critical.

Here's my recommendation to Yamaha. Fix the slippy joints. You don't need an engineer to understand that round hard plastic fastened on a glossy surface with the weight of the drum and hard hits slips on the snare (only one joint like this - pole fastened to a pole???). Increase the pad size, work on a better silent pedal (replace the toy spring). Include more than 2 good sounding drum kits sounds. Space the hi hat and the snare at least a couple inches apart so you aren't cramped hitting the small snare. It may be designed for learning and children but mostly adults are buying this.

Yamaha is a great company and I'm sure they'll get this right sometime.
