Comments about Yamaha Gigmaker 5-Piece Standard Shell Pack with 22" Bass Drum:

I've been around musical instrumetns for a very long time, and I have very realistic expectations when it comes to buying budget gear. Is this a decent kit? Absolutely. Is it comparable to a much more expensive kit? Not a chance.

I wanted to buy my daughters a kit since they are both in school band, and I wanted to stay within a budget. Listening to my drummer friends, I got this budget kit, but I got high end cymbals (A Customs) and relatively expensive batter heads. With heavy heads (I have black suedes, EMAD, and Emperor X), they sound great. Like other people have commented, they have a very limited tuning range before they become too tight or compeltely floppy.

The kit looks great, my kids love it, and I won't have a heart attack as it starts getting banged up when they have to start taking it to friends' garages. I will say that the bass drum lugs keep getting loose, which is a definite concern, but I've tried to maintain a maintenance regimen that my kids can follow as best practice.

My biggest gripe is with the snare. When it is tuned optimally, it's very difficult to get decent dynamics from it. My ghost notes are as loud as regular hits. It feels like a marching snare, but it also may be the heavy batter head I've placed on it.

But for beginners, I would definitely recommend this kit over others in this price range. But take the advice of a dad with tweens: don't skimp on the heads and cymbals.

Comments about Yamaha Gigmaker 5-Piece Standard Shell Pack with 22" Bass Drum:

I have got the white grape glitter this year a few months back and this is actually a great drum set. Its not poor like people claim it to be. People say it is hard to tune but you have to know how to tune correctly not just tune all drum sets can not be tune the same. I am really looking into buying the silver, blue, black and real soon.

Comments about Yamaha Gigmaker 5-Piece Standard Shell Pack with 22" Bass Drum:

I've owned this kit for about 2 years now, I actually won it at a concert band performance. it was supposed to be a raffle for the audience and i won the raffle on stage.

Like any drummer who just won a set, i was extremely excited, however after many months of really playing around with them, more and more things started to bother me about them.

      Snare drum.
This is THE most poorly made snare drum i've ever owned. not only was it extremely difficult to tune, but I put an Emperor X head on it and in 2 weeks of playing on it, the shell caved in and the lug fell off. now before you go thinking that my technique is poor, know that i am an extremely picky drummer and i treat my equipment like gold. i have never damaged a drum in my life. Ive had my share of snares and that has never happened to me. and also i don't crank my snares, i like a low-medium tuning.

      Toms/Kick:
The rest of the kit wasn't as bad as the snare, i didn't have any shell issues. that being said these are a |3itch to tune. when taking the toms off the bass drum mounts, they weren't all that bad, they had nice tone and the response from the bottom and top head worked well together. As soon as you put it back on the mount, the drum chokes and gross overtones come out from the drums. the moment you put it on a separate tom mount, they ring nicely.
The bass drum isn't a bad bass drum, for a poplar shell, it has a nice punch to it (mind you i use the EMAD). but there was no depth to the sound, no warmth, you can hear the kick but you can't feel it. There's more of a slap than a punch.

      Durability:
This is a huge issue with the kit, these are thin poplar shells that warp easily. the tom mounts are drilled directly into the shells and the toms are being impaled by a heavy-mass rod; causing the shell to warp over tension and time. The tightening knob for the tom mount that slides into the bass drum broke because there's just a cheap plastic piece holding up the heavy mount with 2 toms on it.

      Overall:
This kit will not last a long time, even with steady maintanace. theyre difficult to keep in tune. the shells are not strong and unless yo barely use the kit as a beginner, i would not suggest buying this kit if you plan to stick with this kit for a long time.
Also, don't fall for Yamaha's claim that you get a beginners kit with Yamaha quality. because you dont. Yamaha better step up their quality game if theyre going to advertise that they make a nice kit. "Yamaha" doesnt make a kit worth buying. sound does not a name.

So, do yourselves a favour and save up a couple more hundred and get a higher quality Tama, Pearl, or PDP kit.

To finish this off, if you're looking for a versatile kit that will get you by and you're not fussy about sound as long as you can hit it. this is for you. Beware though, this is not a quality drum set. it's just a drum set.

Comments about Yamaha Gigmaker 5-Piece Standard Shell Pack with 22" Bass Drum:

I am an experienced drummer...been playing for about 35 years...started in school concert band and jazz ensembles. Played in "garage bands" as a kid, and now play in a 7-member combo. I have owned several drum kits over the years.

I am very proud to say that my son, age 16, is becoming quite a drummer. After considerable research, and working on a budget, I chose this set as his first kit.

I purchased the shell pack without hardware, and added the Sound Percussion 5-piece hardware pack separately.

The shell kit was shipped securely, in two boxes. As a drummer, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of assembling the kit, as it gave me a very good look at what I had purchased.

For me, Yamaha has always been synonymous with quality when it comes to musical instruments. This kit didn't disappoint. The well constructed wood shells, tight outer shell wraps, quality metal hoops, and the heavy duty ball-socket tom mounts make it difficult for me to limit the description of this kit to merely being a "starter kit".

I agree with other reviewers in that it would be a good idea to have someone with drum experience help get these drums tuned properly. With this purchase, I also ordered Remo Tone Control Rings for the snare and toms. I should note, though, that even without the rings, I detected almost no hardware vibration noise when playing. I just happen to prefer the sound with the rings.

All-in-all, this is a solid, standard 5-piece drum kit - suitable for practice and performance - that should last well beyond your drummer's "beginner phase".

          Enjoy!

          Good for the money

          By wobley wimble

          from new england.

Comments about Yamaha Gigmaker 5-Piece Standard Shell Pack with 22" Bass Drum:

I bought this kit as a 'beater' to bring out to gigs/parties because I don't want my expensive drumset to get damaged. For the quality/price I'm pleased with my purchase. I've been playing for a long time and this kit suits me just fine, if you're just starting out this isn't a bad choice. I might recommend having someone who knows how to tune drums help you, though.
I ordered the shell pack only so there isn't all that much in the way of special features, but I suppose the ball-and-socket tom holder deserves an honorable mention. I'm not a big fan of bass drum mounted toms but they've been staying put, no slipping. One thing I'm not real impressed with is the snare throw... basically it's made of plastic. It hasn't broken on me or anything but it doesn't give me any warm and fuzzy feeling of security either.
The quality is actually pretty good. The drums don't sound half bad, however it took me a little longer to tune them 'just right' than I expected. The lugs weren't smooth enough in my opinion, so getting them finger tight to start tuning meant using a drum key. The wrap looks very nice though, I bought the green one (white grape) and thought it looked better in person than in pictures. Again, I wish the snare throw off switch wasn't made of plastic.
I'd say as far as value goes this is a good buy if you're going to go with a brand new kit. If you've already got the hardware you could do a lot worse for the price.
