A quality kit for kids, both big and little.

The Manu Katche Hip Gig Drum Set was inspired by Manu Katche's question, "Why don't you make a real drum kit for kids?" It caught the ears of Yamaha's percussion designers and they took off with the project. A compact drum kit, it is designed for smaller players, but is no toy. It has a 16" x 16", 9-ply bass drum; 6-ply, 13" x 13" floor tom; 10" x 7" tom; and 5" x 12" snare all made of quality Philippine mahogany. The Air Seal System produces perfectly round shells with powerful tone. The floating bass drum system lets you adjust the height on the pedal side of the bass drum to ensure the beater makes contact at the center of the head for maximum tone. Of course, once you use a Hip Gig kit you'll never think of a standard drum kit as portable ever again. Cymbals not included.

Air Seal System for superior shells

The use of the Air Seal System is responsible for the superior quality found in Yamaha drum shells. Select woods are cut into plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. The resulting shells are perfectly round and of uniform thickness delivering superior tone quality and exceptional durability.

A great jazz kit

By Travis-UwgT5

from NH

This is a great kit for playing in small combo jazz and funk groups. For years I had been playing on a Pearl forum set, and it was just too big to get that classic jazz sound. Not wanting to spend thousands on a kit, I looked no further than the Manu Katche. I had heard many professional players in my area use it, and I can not be happier with my purchase. The hardware is great and the drums really project. I just gigged with it last night and immediately got comments on its great tone. My bandmates love it, it improved our sound tenfold. The only drawback is the throne, as I find it does not do a good job staying in place. Other than that, this kit is a huge bargain. If you are considering an upgrade and need a great sounding, pro quality kit for jazz, funk, latin, or be-bop, this is for you!

better than I thought it would be

This is one of a couple of kits that my school owns; I use it three days a week in jazz class. The original reso heads are still on, but the batter heads were replaced with Evans G2 coateds. The cymbals we use are A Zildjians; 13" new beat hats, 14" thin crash, and 20" ping ride. The snare has been replaced with a 14x5.5" steel Yamaha snare - I'm not sure the series name. I thought this would be a really crappy kit, but it has exceeded my expectations, acoustically at least. The hardware is quite flimsy, but at a high school, stands have to be extremely heavy-duty to survive the everyday pounding and the constant relocations. If you are a parent buying a drumset for a child who is responsible and seriously interested in drumming, I'd definitely recommend this kit. Otherwise, there are much better kits for your money.

Umpawa Lumpaws Kit

THis is a very small kit with a big sound! Lots of volume. The 12" snare is not bad for a mohog 12". The tom sound great resonates well, 13" floor tom sound just the same as the 10" tom. The 16" bass is not the best on putting out the deep bass sound. But does ok for a small shell. Portable WOW this kit sets up any where. I got mine used. A bit pricy new though, for Just mohog shells. Cover fades bad don't care for that. Put Evans EC2 on shell they came ALIVE!
