Birch-like warmth and maple-like attack with the gorgeous look of oak.
The Yamaha Oak Custom Series drums follow in the footsteps of the Yamaha birch, maple, and beech drum series; as oak offers excellent qualities as a drum shell material. Oak has a solid fundamental that delivers powerful sound while its character allows for a unique shell-size lineup. Beautifully grained, this hardwood creates a drum with stunning looks. The kick drum shell is 7-ply while the toms and floor tom shells are 6-ply.
Air Seal System for Superior Shells
The use of the Air Seal System is in part responsible for the superior quality found in Yamaha drum shells. Select woods are cut into plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. The resulting drum shells are perfectly spherical and of uniform thickness delivering superior tone quality and exceptional durability.
Oak Shells are Universal Sizes
The Oak Custom shell depths are sized between Yamaha's jazz-depth and power-depth drums. The universal size allows for maximum projection while maintaining strong attack. The added depth enhances the oak tone with greater bottom end and more power.
These uniquely designed, small, oval-shaped lugs are easily attached to the shell with a single bolt. Small footprints offer minimum lug-to-shell contact allowing the shell to deliver maximum tone. A special nylon insert prevents tension rods from becoming loose during play.
Kick Drum Spurs
A sturdy hexagonal design and fixed-angle position allow Yamaha's spurs to withstand kick drum kicks. Height adjustment and the releasing and retracting of the pointed spur are made easy with a drum key.
Mounted Toms and Floor Toms Equipped with YESS Mounts
Long found on Yamaha's high-end drum kits, the original YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System) mounting system is used on all Oak Custom rack and floor toms. This rod clamp system allows attachment of the drum to the tom holder without the need of a hole in the drum shell for the rod to pass through. The YESS clamp is attached to the shell at the nodal point with two bolts so as to allow the shell to vibrate freely without degrading the shell's dynamic range and sustain. The nodal point is the location on a shell with the least amount of vibration allowing for the mount to have minimal effect on the resonance of the shell.
Ball Clamp & Triple Tom Holder
This round ball clamp is made of super-hard resin. The ball is held firmly in place with a steel plate and large wing bolt. While providing ease of operation, this system also delivers total freedom in positioning with superior stability.

Comments about Yamaha Oak Custom 5-Piece Shell Pack:
I bought the Yamaha Oak Custom in a shell pack configuration with the 22 x 17 kick, 10" - 12" -14" rack toms and the 16" floor in August 2010 and these drums not only look professional quality, they sound as good as any drum kit Ive ever heard live. They are louder than any drum kit Ive ever played ( 45 years playing professionally ) and they are easily tuned from rock tuning all the way up to jazz tuning. The lacquered finish is spectacular and the wood grain shows thru to make this kit totally eye-catching. The YESS tom mounts adjust easily and stay where you put them. Oak has a unique tone...its like a mixture of mahogony, maple and birch tones with more volume than any of the three woods. I play a variety of Rock, Traditional Country, Big Band Swing, Western Swing, Top 40 Country and not only do I love the sound of them, the rest of the band does as well.
The YESS tom mount system works very well. The lacquered finish lets the wood grain show through and its a smooth beautiful finish. You might find comparable finished drums, but you wont find any better.
You cant buy a better quality drum. Yamaha stands behind their drums as good as any manufacturer and better than most.
After owning and playing the Oak Customs for a year now, I can honestly say that the sound of the drums, the finish on the drums as well as the YESS mounting system makes this Yamaha's "Sleeper" kit...Ive played Yamaha's top of the line kits, ( except for the PHX ) and I prefer the sound of the Oak Customs over the Maple and Birch Absolutes which cost a Lot More than the Oak Customs.
