Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour Snare Drum:

Love this snare. I've read the other reviews and seem to think this snare needs better heads top and bottom to sound its best. I also switched out the snares to Puresound's and the heads to USA Remo coated CS for the batter and an ambassador hazy for the snare side. For what I paid, these enhancements really make this drum live up to its potential.
        buy it while you can!!

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour Snare Drum:

Use a dampening ring - it shortens the sustain and makes it sound more solid and less hollow. With the dampening ring, it has a neat POP sound in the center. Hitting on the outside of the head allows for much more bounce while still maintaining a good sound. Rim shots are also strong. For some songs it sounds better than my maple snare, so I have an excuse to switch out snares - who doesn't want different sounds?

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour Snare Drum:

I just got this snare, and to be fair have only played it a few minutes, but first impressions say that it needs work to sound clean. My mainstay snare is a 1985 6.5 x 14 Ludwig chrome which is crisp and clean. It has an internal damper.

I was interested in trying a wood snare, and the Yamaha was being offered at such a low price I thought I'd give it a try. I used a drum dial to tune the top head to about 85 per its documentation and the bottom skin to about 80. This provides a nice reactive surface.

Snare adjustments made quite a sound difference, but nothing would get rid of the ring.

There is no internal damper to reduce the ringing, simply placing a finger on the batter made a big difference, so it seems that this drum will need either dead ringers or some other dampening system. Possibly different skins?

I have no doubt that this snare can be tuned up and be serviceable, but if you want good sounds out of the box, this is not the tool.

If possible, play it before you buy.
