Folks, the negative reviewers just don't get it - the purpose of the wedge is to make cross sticking work on a 12 or 13" drum. Everyone knows rim clicks are feeble at best on these types of drums, and if you want to do reggae, ballads, Latin or anything with clicks, you are lost without this item. It's a bit overpriced, yes, but it does EXACTLY what Yamaha says it will do. I put it on a 13x5 brass snare, and the rim clicks spank! Drummers, do your homework - this was not meant to be a Jam Block-type special effect, and when you talk about rim shots, you are totally lost in the woods. Yamaha should just lower the price by $10 and let us all "feel the love."

Not a necessary part of a drum kit.
I hate to be negative, but I got the wedge today, and am underwhelmed. I'd hoped it was going to be a miraculous transformation of my cross-stick sound, but oddly, it sounds the same as my snare rim does...very much the same. It does sound good, but so does my cross-stick, and this is on a cheapo Gretsch Catalina Jazz snare (with some upgrades).
If you've been drumming a while, you have probably found the sweet spots on the head and rim, and found your pitches. The wedge is no different, it won't help you get a "better" tone, if you don't already know how to get a good sound. The sweet spots on my drum head are the same for the wedge as it was before.
I would say that it would be great for beginners who can't get a sound, but it would not be, it's the same technique. If you are already getting a good tone, don't waste the money.
The really nice thing about this, is that I discovered that my old cross-stick technique and sound is great. The Russ Miller will be heading to ebay.

Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
Worth the [$]. I had doubts before that the crowd couldn't hear the rim knocks. This helps a lot to get a greater sound. Fits on any snare drum.
Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
amazing go for it
I don't really know how long this will last because i haven't owned it that long but this is a little life savor when it comes to jazz, I have a 12x5 pork pie little squealer snare and I don't know if you have it or not but as amazing as the snare is it doesn't have the best rim shot but this makes the snare seem like it should be worth a million buckes i suggest this if you're not happy with your rim so go for it and engoy!!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
This wedge is not just any piece of wood, it is a cross-sticker's dream come true! No more struggling to line up your stick over the lug everytime, no more turning your stick around to get a better sound with the butt end! It's easy to play quick, complex patterns and grooves with this product. It doesn't effect the sound or functionality of your snare at all, either. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Ludwig player (always been a little wary of yamaha products) and a total vintage guy who doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles on his kit, but I can't play without this. Absolutely amazing, although it could be a bit cheaper.
Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
I'll have one soon. Why? listen to Shawn Pelton on the "Live from Daryl's House" webcasts. Provides a solid side stick sound with no abuse to rims or bearing edges.

Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
I have used the groove Wedge in a few different musical situations, but have never owned one myself. This accessory is definitely not meant to sound like a jam block or wood block, it is meant to enhance the power and clarity of your rim shot sound. I have a 7x13 Ddrum snare which sounds great, but b/c of its smaller diameter, lacks a certain power from the rimshots. I just ordered a groove wedge yesterday, and I can't wait to hear it on that drum! Great product, by a great inventor/drummer, Russ Miller.
Comments about Yamaha Russ Miller Groove Wedge:
Great for Reggae/Ska music. Well worth it if you are playing a lot of one-drops. Much louder and easier to hit than a cross-stick on the rim of the drum.
