Wow...

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

Well, let me say that what initially drew me to this ride was the fact that I had been looking for a ride that sounded similar to Phil Selway (Radiohead drummer's) ride sound on their album "In Rainbows;" Particularly, the track "Reckoner." I know that isn't typically the way you should choose your cymbals, but to be honest, it is the sound that I had in my head. I'm convinced this is the cymbal that he used on the track, if not, it's close enough. As far applications, do what sounds good to you! I use this ride in MANY applications, it's not very versatile, but that's why I also have a 22" Zildjian A Medium Ride. Between the two, I'm covered for any type of musical situation. I also use a 16" K Dark crash and 14" K on top of a 13" A for Hi-hats--I got that idea from some jazz greats from the 40s-50s.

The sound I was looking for

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I own a 20" A Medium Ride, and a 19" Armand Signature Ride (with rivets). The 20" K Custom Dry fits perfectly in between those. It has that well-defined, dry pinging sound you hear on so many great jazz (and some rock) recordings, but is so hard to find in an actual cymbal in the store. After looking and listening to rides for many months, I bought three of these and took them home to compare, then returned two of them. One of the cymbals I returned was almost identical to the one I kept, the third one didn't sound quite as good. The 20" A Medium Ride is more versatile, but this K Custom Dry is my favorite ride sound. Works well with a brush, too, which is not easy to find in a ride. I LOVE IT!

maximize your musicality, minimize washy noise

By Steven Bedigian

from Merrimack, NH

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I just bought a new lacquered maple Mexican DW kit, and wanted a new set of cymbals to compliment the drums visually and accoustically. I tried lots of cymbals looking for sounds with quick attack and decay, as few overtones as possible. I found these to be the most musical and least noisy: 14" and 16" A Custom Fast Crashes, 13" A Custom Hats, and the 20" K Custom Dry Ride. The ride has incredible ping, killer bell, and the overtones don't build up and drown out the stick attack as with every other ride. Kinda Ugly next to my Bril A Custom's, but sounds incredible!

Fantastic ping!

By BilldaDrummer

from Sparks, NV

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I purchased the 20" K Custom dry ride after listening to nearly a dozen different ride cymbals from different manufacturers. This cymbal combines the ping needed for jazz applications with a consistent sustain for rock and country songs. I play in a loud rock band, and this cymbal cuts through the guitars with no problem. But when I play jazz ballads, it has the character you expect from a K Custom. The best of both worlds.

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

...Or a drummer with a passion for a great sounding ride! This is the ride of my dreams, and I play it everyday. I love how this ride isn't too washy. That's what a 20" K Constantinople is for. This cymbal produces a dry ting on the bell with the edge of the stick that will move listeners and quite possibly bring world peace. It isn't the "all around ride" but it does what it does better than any other. I love it.

Get your hopes up...

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

...because there's no worry about disappointment with this one. For nearly all musical tastes, the K Custom Dry Ride is the ideal ride cymbal. I bought it after months of research and comparison, and I absolutely made the right choice. After playing it, any other ride sounds washy...and my jazz band agrees. Not very often you get wind players to develop a cymbal preference. It complements my A Zildjians and A Custom beautifully, and projects while maintaining an air of polite, comfortable warmness. We regard it as the "Holy Grail" of ride cymbals.

Pros

  • Bright Sound
  • Responsive Feel

Cons

  • Can't Crash On It

Best Uses

  • Big Band
  • Latin

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

This is great cymbal for Latin Jazz and Big Band. Why? Because it cuts. This is not a washy cymbal by any means so it carries out through the rest of the band and not washed out. Because its so dry it is also great for Latin Jazz. The bell is great on this cymbal and carries out beautifully. This is not my go to cymbal for bop though.

  • Not Versatile

Best Uses

  • Funk Or Rock Mic'ed
  • Jazz
  • Low Volume Settings
  • Mic'ed Venues

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I rated this on how well it performs its purpose. It may not be versatile but for low volume, jazz, or mic'ed situations, this cymbal is great.
Great stick definition with very low wash.
Does not crash well at all. Has limited uses but performs very, very well in those scenarios.
Recorded a death metal album with it and was very pleased with the clarity of my sticking patterns due to the low wash. I would, however, not use this cymbal playing that same music live. It doesn't have the volume or the cut needed, especially at large or un mic'ed venues.
Overall, very happy with it, but for the money, you might want to think of something a little more versatile if you're going to be using one ride for all of your current or future projects.

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

The 20" Custom Dry Ride was the sound I was looking for. Nice stick sound, dry with a fast decay. It will not crash very well, if that matters. I use a standard medium 20" K for a right-hand ride and the pair sounds great together. The Custom Dry Ride is a dirty and funky looking and sounding - perfect for jazz and latin.

Beautiful...enough said

By Zildjianman

from Denver, CO

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

Ok...so my rating might be a bit contradictory to what my review is...I own one of these cymbals and I absolutely love it. The problem is it is too dry for my needs. I am in a professional rock band, constantly gigging and I do a LOT of riding...and this cymbal just doesn't cut where I need it too. It is fantastic for jazz or latin projects...but for rock its just not where I need it to be. I would honestly say that this cymbal is great in value and sound, but if you are in a rock or metal band definitely look at something a bit louder and more washy!! Best of luck!!

ping - not wash

By reelbigfish4ever

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I just bought this cymbal, and it is the perfect fit for my Jazz and Rock playing. The ping is loud enough to be heard in gigs over the guitar amps & the bell amazing. The bell has amazing cut. It is not washy or crashable, so if you are into crash-riding, don't buy this cymbal. I, personally, like clear & pungent stick definition without the overpowering undertones, so this is the perfect ride.

This is getting awesome reviews for a reason!

By Tiger Uppercut

from San Jose, CA

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

After a lot of research and comparison I decided to buy one of these second-hand. This cymbal is a great buy, as many owners of this cymbal can attest. If you're looking a ride with a sizzle, this isn't it. This ride has a very dry stick sound that goes very well with wind instruments and also holds its own when applied in other situations like drum'n bass or experimental/progressive rock. The bell sound will cut through a lot of mess and has a pleasant ping. The only con I see with it is that it's a bit quiet so you'll have to work a bit to bring it out without driving your arm into it, though it's not really a big of a deal. My percussion professor, who is also a jazz musician, told me it's one of his favorite rides so I decided to try one out before buying. You should do the same. Try it out and see if it's right for your kind of gigs.

Great Classic K Sound

By nwcoastmeteu

from Tigard, OR

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I'll tell you what, this is a great ride cymbal. It's a little intense with some heavy overtones, but if you already have a dark setup (K and K custom) this cymbal will fit in nicely. The bell is nice a loud and it sounds great in the studio.

Great Ride... but a little quiet

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

This ride is everything that i thought it would be: great sounding, clear ping, and loud bell, I believe it sounds a little quiet to me but I am also using small tiped wood heads on my sticks. It sounds louder with plastic beads. This ride overall is worth the price and looks cooler than any cymbal. If u are hesitant on buying this dont be.. it is good quality and sounds just like the sample.

Love in all the right places.

By Andrewski

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I was searching for a while for a cymbal that can best represent the sound I was looking for on my kit as well as my band. I found this cymbal and it was love at first listen. Nice warm tones and wonderful stick articulation. The sound lays right with the music without compromising the surrounding instruments. It's a beast! Not for everyone, but right for me. You don't find the cymbal, the cymbal finds you. I love it.

Cutting ride cymbal

By kdean1

from Athens, OH

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride:

I've used this cymbal for several years. It's great for big band or old rock. Bass players love the clear "ping" because it is so distinct. The bell is good, too. As mentioned in another review, don't expect much from it as a crash because there is no shimmer. I don't use it for jazz because I like my Bosphorus Gold ride that is great for riding as well as a nice crash. You'll find the Zildjian works well in medium to high volume situations where you have to be heard above amplified guitars. However if you want the old Mitch Mitchell or Keith Moon sound, get some old Avedis Zildjians that have lots of wash while riding.
