I own the first version - Great Cymbal

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

I have the first version of this cymbal and it is a little thicker than the current redesign. Smoky ping with a nice dark spread. Great stick definition at low volumes and still rocks when you spank it with a stick shoulder. The bell has a nice character but is not as forgiving of sloppy playing like some larger bell rides. At almost 7 pounds it can be a powerful ride but it also has a great refined quality to its sound range.

High Def K Custom

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

I Had been playing a 22" Z Custom and 20" Paiste Sig Dark Dry rides for awhile. I needed something with more wash and not such a distinctive TING sound. After hours of playing with many rides, I felt the High Def was it. I love the "left natural" look. The un-lathed bell, and the wavy grooves covering the cymbal. The sound is perfect for me. Played lightly, I have my definition, small about of ting/ping, and the wash is hiding out in the back. Lay into the ride more, and the wash really shines out and the ping is still present without taking over. The bell might not be that loud compared to most rides, but if you keep playing only the bell, you can still get some wash. My two cents: This ride does everything I need it to. From jazz to prog-metal.

Great Jazz Cymbal

By jazzer-kFuPt

from Minnesota

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

I went to Ellis Drum Shop in St. Paul to find a ride cymbal two years ago and tried a bunch of cymbals. When I played this one I realized it was perfect and had to buy it. The only thing I wish is if it were a little less expensive. It's still worth it though. But, if you are thinking of buying any cymbal ever, always try it in person because any way I would try to describe it would not be enough info. I recommend this cymbal for jazz and light rock but play it in person before you buy it!

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

If you're looking for an incredibly versatile ride cymbal that can fit into literally any musical setting, look no further than the chameleon that is the K Custom 22" High Definition Ride. This ride cymbal has a wonderful balance of dry, articulate stick definition and a dark, warm wash. To my ear, it sounds like a lot of the old K's on many of the great jazz recordings from the 50's and 60's, especially Mel Lewis' work with Terry Gibbs or the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. It's thin enough that it has a wonderful stick response which opens the door for a wide range of dynamics, and builds up a nice edge wobble if you really dig in. It also provides a full-bodied, dry crash that's ideal for accenting a ride pattern. As you work your way from the bell to the shoulder of the cymbal, you go from a drier, more pingy ride sound to a lush, darker wash without sacrificing control or stick sound. The bell, being unlathed, isn't necessarily an ice cream truck bell but more mellow in nature - cutting enough for funky accents on a ride pattern or a Latin groove, but not so overpowering that it couldn't be used in a smaller combo setting. Due to the aforementioned characteristics, this is my go-to, primary ride cymbal for when I play with a big band, jazz combo, praise band, or the occasional funk/rock date. It's THAT versatile! For excellent performance examples of this cymbal, check out videos of Tommy Igoe and The Birdland Big Band on YouTube OR check out their incredible studio album, Eleven, which is available for purchase on iTunes. Keep swingin'! -Cole Younger

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

I just got one of these today, and it is easily the most beautiful ride cymbal that I have ever played. Its warm, smoky wash effectively replicates the old K's I'd hear in records from the golden age of Swing, and yet, it has more than earned its place in the modern cymbal catalogue. It even blends very well with the eclectic mix of A's, K's, K Constantinoples, and Han Chis I have in my standard setup. The bell even holds its own in heavy metal blast beats with its dark, raw bite. I would most highly recommend this cymbal to any serious jazz drummer who wants a dark, dry, smooth, and versatile ride for whatever gigs lie ahead.

      Great ride cymbal

      By Cheryl Holder

      from Illinois

Comments about Zildjian K Custom High Definition Ride Cymbal:

I have been looking for a ride cymbal that doesn't sound over powering. I'm a new drummer and my kit is in a small bedroom. This cymbal was actually recommended by someone at Zildjian and I'm very pleased. You can still hear the ping of the cmbal but it doesn't take on alife of it's own. Very controlled. I even bought the high definition high hats.
