OVERVIEW

Revolutionary low-volume cymbals your neighbors will appreciate.

As a leader in cymbal making, Zildjian is always looking for new and innovative ways to bring a better musical experience to the drumming community. One area where all drummers commonly express dissatisfaction is the use of neoprene pads, mutes, and other dampening devices on cymbals to practice at reduced volumes. This is true especially for drummers in densely populated cities. How are you to actually know what you sound like when you can™t feel or hear it? With drumming being a highly tactile instrument, Zildjian has come up with the solution - the Low Volume Family of cymbals.

Through tireless research and development, a specialized pattern was achieved to deliver the best of both worlds: musical sound and lower volume. This innovative pattern is combined with a special proprietary alloy with a unique matte finish that enables the Low Volume cymbal to have fewer high frequencies and is up to 80% quieter than a traditional cymbal.

Using a sound level meter, Zildjian compared the decibel levels of a traditional Zildjian cymbal versus their Low Volume Series, both played with consistent power. The results showed that a Low Volume cymbal is up to 80% quieter than a traditional Zildjian cymbal.

Where have these been all my life. With the use of these and Aquarian super pads I can now practice anytime I want. The combo of the L80s with the pads is as close as you can get to the feel of my real drum heads and cymbals, but with 80% less volume. Perfect for it's intended use.

The feel is the same as regular cymbals, but half the volume. Pair them with Aquarian Super Pads and you have a practice set of drums that feel the same but will not upset family or neighbors.

What I like most is that if I want to turn them into Gen 16 it's just a matter of a module and pickup. Even though there quiet they still have a great acoustical sound.

Very quiet product with great feel compared to rubber cymbals. The lightness of the hihat makes the pedal respond somewhat differently. A great solution to an age old problem that is very cost effective.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

These def cut sound by a lot. I can play them without hearing protection if needed. And it's possible to have a conversation with a student while they are being played. They feel very close to real cymbals although are much lighter. Be aware that this affects the feel and regular cymbals will feel heavier after using these. For example. the ride/crash cymbal moves a lot when I really lay into it. It took me a bit of time to adjust. Overall, they do exactly what they claim. Highly recommended if you are a drum teacher and/or need to practice quietly.

Does the trick. Better than the Gen16's for acoustic practice. More realistically priced. They don't have the annoying ring after being struck that the Gen's do.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

I use an electronic kit for practice to keep the neighbors from complaining about noise. One of the things I've always hated about e-kits are the cymbals and hats. They just don't sound or respond like real cymbals do. My intention in buying the L80 cymbals was to replace the "e-cymbals" with these. Just mic them up and mix them in with the e-drums. I've only had these for two days but I've got to say it's a success. They do exactly what I hoped they would even though they don't sound exactly like "normal" cymbals. I had to experiment with mic placement for a while to get them to sit well with the e-drums in my headphones. For me, I have the mic's close, aimed pretty much at the bell of the cymbal. Good attack and some sustain without too much overtones.

My favorites are the hats (and that was the main thing I wanted them for.) Mic'ed up properly, the hats sit well in the mix with e-drums and have all the dynamics and nuance of normal hihat cymbals. Briefly, I used normal hat cymbals with my e-kit because they just felt so much better to play, but they were too loud. These L80's solve that problem.

I can't really speak to their use in quiet gigs as advertised. They have very little sustain at all. In fact, all you really hear is the stick noise with a very subtle decay. I tried some of the Vic Firth/Steve Smith Tala wands to see if I could minimize the stick noise but it just wasn't loud enough. These cymbals feel and play exactly like normal cymbals but they don't sound like normal cymbals.

I guess my suggestion would be, if you intend to use these as quiet practice cymbals, they will be excellent. If you can play a rubber practice pad or e-kit pad loudly and not bother the neighbors, I doubt these will either. Just stick noise.

On the other hand, if you want these for playing quiet gigs or recording, I'd suggest actually trying out a set before buying to see if the sound suits you. Hope they release individual cymbals eventually like chinas/splashes/etc...
