I consider myself a professional drummer and play every day. Between the two of my bands I was on tour for 2 months out of last year and played over 100 shows in 2008. Having said that, I do not play excessively, at most 3 hours a day (at MOST). I've been drumming for about 4 years, and although I don't have as much experience with kits, I have tried almost every cymbal there is to buy. When I started playing drums I went through a variety of cheaply made sheet cymbals like Zildjians ZXT brand. It became obvious once I started playing live shows regularly that not only was I hard hitter, but I needed a cymbal to last. Z customs are advertised and promoted as "that cymbal," and to tell you the truth, they did not measure up. Z customs are loud, powerful, and strong, but they gain this by sacrificing some of the nuances and swell of an A custom. Seeing myself more often in a live setting then a studio I bought a cash pack (16+18 inch). For the first 5 months They sounded amazing. Although they needed a week or two to work in they exceeded my expecations. THEN within a week of each other, both of them cracked, and on top of it, it was a week before I left for a month long summer tour. Surprisingly, since the warranty was still in effect I sent my cymbals back with relative ease and got two brand new Z customs in the mail. Life was good again. Its been 3 months since that tour (and the new cymbals) and I find my self in the same situation. Within a week both cracked. The 18 has a 2 inch crack from the outside of the cymbal and the 16 has a 3 inch crack running along the middle circumference. Is this a disspointment? Yes and No. After all with my previous experience I almost expected this to happen, but inside, there was a little glimmer of hope that I might have a set of cymbals last me at least a year.I need advice as much as anyone. Im not the hulk. I weight 150 pounds and Im 6 4. a skinny string bean. All in all these are great cymbals, but just a little too good to be true.

I bought the 16" expecting the usual Zildjian sound and quality im used to. I was sadly mistaken. This cymbal sounds exactly like hitting my z custom top hi hat by itself. My friends and drum teacher even said the sound sucked. I exchanged this cymbal for a paiste crash, paiste ride, paiste cymbal polish, vic firth 4-pack of sticks and some cymbal felt all for the same price as this one cymbal. I was not disapointed in my new purchases. The only thing I liked about this cymbal was how it looks.

I just bought this 16'' today for a gig today, and it blew me away! It complimented my Projection crash really well, and even my band members were surprised at the sound. If you play hard rock, metal or something heavier GET THE Z SERIES! I know the Z Customs are discontinued now, and it's Z3 lineup is up, but GET THE Z SERIES OR Z3!You will not be disappointed.

19

Bought it to compliment my 3 18" Sabian & 2 16" Zildjian crash's. The body is rather heavy and while it looks great, the one major flaw after getting it home and playing it is that the "aftertones" just go on and on. A fast puch of the cymbal does not result in an explosive full crash effect, but rather like hitting a medium ride, with the above mentioned after tones. Good for constant loud music, but for musice with dynamics and peaks and valleys, this crash will ring on too long and not decay quick enough.

The Perfect Crash

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I have traded my A custom projection crash on the 18" version of the rock crash. The A custom projection is good, but it lacks volume for me to cut through the riffs of my death metal band. I got the older version of this Z custom, and it really has an aggressive sound that roars VERY LOUD. You might as well consider wearing some ear protection gear on this one because it may damage your ears. It has a sheer volume with a nice tone that perfectly matches my 18" z custom medium crash. Perfect cymbal for METAL!

Beautiful, loud, and responsive

At first I bought an A Custom crash, and it just wasn't loud enough. I also wasn't sure if it could stand up to my style of playing. So I returned and exchanged it for the Z Custom Rock Crash. When I first received this cymbal, just the sheer look of it made me glad I bought it. I set it up on my boom stand, and started incorporating it into some of my beats. The first thing I noticed was that it was VERY loud, which is perfect for what I wanted. I tried a few roles with it, and its responsivness is just flawless. To make this review short: if you want a loud, responsive, and amazing looking cymbal, buy this one. It's definitely better than the A Custom.

HARD HITTERS LOOK NO FURTHER!

By metaldrummer666

I have always had a problem with crashes cracking on me,and this is the only exception! I have owned the 17" for 5 years now, and not 1 crack or dent on it, so I purchased the 16" recently. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND TO ANY HARD HITTER!!

Great cymbal

By Antoon IV

from Undisclosed

I owned the 18" crash for 4 years before I got the first crack in it. I play metal and play hard. I've had around 6 other cymbals purchased through out the years that broke before this one. So if your looking for a good sound for metal and a long lasting cymbal this is your choice!
