OVERVIEW

A live performance vocal mic designed for singers in high-volume bands.

The D5 dynamic vocal microphone for lead and backing vocals delivers a powerful sound even on the noisiest stage. Its supercardioid polar pattern ensures maximum gain before feedback. The D 5 stands for a crisp sound that cuts through every mix.

AKG made the first microphone diaphragm ever whose thickness varies across its diameter. The Laminated Varimotion diaphragm deep-drawing process allows the diaphragm itself to be fine-tuned with no extra tuning resonators, leading to a quantum leap in audio performance.

The dual shock mount eliminates any kind of mechanical noise for trouble-free live use. The audience will hear nothing but the pristine sound of your voice!

FEATURES
  • Frequency response optimized for vocal use
  • Integrated wind and pop screen for effective suppression of pop and breath noise
  • Frequency independent supercardioid polar pattern for high gain before feedback
  • Patented AKG Laminated Varimotion diaphragm
  • Shock mounted transducer element reduces handling and cable noise
  • Extremely resilient, spring-steel wire-mesh cap for extra impact resistance

I've used this mic exclusively for vocals in school gyms. The sound is incredibly clear. It works well on voices from low to high with clarity that is unmatched. Also, this mic has vertually no handling noise which is great for non-professional users.
The sound from the AKG D5 mic is so clear it makes you wonder why Shure even bothers to make the SM58. The first time I introduced the D5, The audience noticed immediately and many commented on the quality of the sound after the performance.
This mic has been set up and stored weekly for about a year. It has been handled by people who hardly know which end of the mic to hold and looks and works as good as it did on day one.
I've tried a number of other mics in this price range and you can't touch this one with anything even twice the price.

These things break. I have owned three of them (AND two of the C5) and the connections have worn out on all of them. I was in my second song on the last one when the connection totally fell apart on me. I have used all new cables, and it's the mics. I think they are better dynamics than pretty much everything out there, but I'm sad to say I can't buy them anymore. Just too unreliable.
Great value for the sound, but if you are concerned about them shorting out, then it's not worth it.

Comments about AKG D5 Supercardioid Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

Clearer sound than the SM58. TIght super-cardioid pattern rejects sound in a studio that isn't soundproofed well. You can get some minor proximity effect if you're really close. I have the e935 which is cardioid so I switch between the two. They're very similar but the D5 has a more intimate sound. More bassy but not as transparent. I prefer the D5 for live performances. The e935 for studio recordings when I can't use a condenser mic because there's too much sound getting picked up. Unfortunately, I don't have the e945 which has a similar cardioid pattern. But the e935 which cost me two times as the D5 is hard to distinguish in a blind test. I've always thought that the SM58 sound muddy and listening to the D5 that even makes more sense. The D5 suits a man's voice very well. So if you're looking for a super-cardiod mic that's a step above the rest go for it you won't be disappointed. The D5 has earned a place in my mic arsenal. Great deal.

Comments about AKG D5 Supercardioid Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I am using a vocal effects processor for my vocals. It can make my keyboard sound wonky when the vocal mic starts picking up the keys and adding unwanted vocal effects to the piano sound. Especialy in smaller venues when the monitors are turned up. The D5 solves this with the super cardroid pickup pattern (and the price point was nice). It does sound different than a SM58. In comparison it is clearer on the high freq and has more gain. Seems to cut through easier, clearer even when using the effects heavy. Because of this it seems like I don't have to try and push the sound into into the mic (like my 58). However I couldn't seem to use the holder that came with it, plastic threads, really? I had to re-use the Sm 58 mic holder on my stand. I am still very happy with this mic and would recommend it.

        Holy Cow!!!!!! Its amazing!

Comments about AKG D5 Supercardioid Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

Wow!!!! What a steal!!!!!! For about a year now, I have been singing in our worship group at church (as well as guitar) and had been using a cheap back up mic we had in our stock room. It wasnt very clear and just was overall not very good. Our guitar center guy recommended this for us to use and I was blown away! This mic is so clear. It is comfortable to hold and works great on a stand. The vocals are crisp, clear, and clean. It also features feedback prevention, and I have yet to get feedback (even our old $600 mic the other singers used at the time had feedback). Not only is it functional but also looks cool. The flat top is stylish and comfortable for singing. This mic is great, inexpensive, and a dream to use and record with. Get it now!!!!!!

Great option to have on hand!

        By wechtermongoose

Comments about AKG D5 Supercardioid Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

This is a smoother sounding microphone than many similar priced mics. It sounds a bit "EQ'ed" compared to, say, a Shure Beta58. To be specific, the high frequency 'air' is distinctly present, but not likely to be perceived as harsh. The smoothness can also be attributed to a remarkably predictable proximity effect and warm low-mid response.I must say, as a lead vocalist with a so-so voice, it is embarrassing how many mics I've tried. That being said, this is one I'll keep. In my opinion, it's not as loud and clear as a Beta58a, it doesn't cut as easily through a loud mix as a Beta87a (although it does indeed cut with a bit more effort), but it's got a classy personality of its own. I like it enough to buy a couple more for the backup vox to replace their SM58's. Give it a try.

I use this with a Sennheiser G3 EW100 XLR wireless diversity transmitter to a camera mounted receiver for recording interviews. The sounds is extremely clean and easy to listen to and the microphone provides a well driven output level. Build quality is excellent. Highly recommended.
