Stay Away from this Mic

By Disappointed

from Phoenix

Comments about Audio-Technica AE4100 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone:

This thing is junk. Had to send it back once to get a component fixed after 2 uses. The turnaround was good on the mic being "fixed" and returned but it still doesn't work correctly. Windows does not recognize the mic.

Comments about Audio-Technica AE4100 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone:

This mic works great. It was the loudest mic I used this weekend without having feedback and the sound clearity was great as well. Here's how I would rank it against other mics that was used that day.
    Loudness: AE4100>beta 87a>Super 55 Del>beta 58
    Clearity: beta 87a>AE4100>Super 55 Del=beta 58

    USB feature unreliable/broken

Comments about Audio-Technica AE4100 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone:

I bought three of the ATR2100-usb mics in March 2014 for light usage (podcast recording). When I use the XLR output and go through a mixing board, these mics work fine; great tone, noise free, etc.

The problem I have is when using the USB connection. For the first six months of very occasional use (twice monthly for up to 20 minutes), the mic worked fine. But no more.

First one mic became unusable on my Windows 7 laptop, displaying the error "usb device not recognized". The other mics worked fine, until today when mic #2 "broke".

(I subsequently tried the "broken" mics on my mac, same result.)

Now I'm left with only one of the original three mics able to be used via the USB connection to the laptop.

At this time I cannot recommend the ATR2100-USB.

        Best Uses

Comments about Audio-Technica AE4100 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone:

          Positives:

          - Microphone has 3.5mm jack allowing you to monitor with 0 latency - great function

          - Design is sleek, simple and made of metal, feels heavy and of quality

          - Sound quality is great, the range may not be that wide (50-15 000 Hz) but is ample at an amateur / hobby level

          - Overall great value, comes with a stand, zero latency is great function, price is good.

          Negatives:

          - Some cheapo carrying pouch / case would have been nice

          - Have heard of quality issues with the USB / Headphone jack such as breaking. Could be resolved if you minimise the number of unnecessary insertion / removal of USB / headphone cable

          Good for:

          - Amateur / hobby singers recording covers

          - Podcaster / Youtube / Voice over

          - Value for money

          - Upgrade from cheapo PC mic / inbuilt microphones
