      OVERVIEW

The classic dynamic, "workhorse stable" microphone for all instrumental applications

It incorporates a hum-buck coil that rejects mains borne interference introduced when using the microphone close to video monitors or other mains powered devices.

"If the SM57 were a microphone, this is what it would sound like"

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

This mic is the mic for high gain guitar if you like a very polished, studio ready sound. If you're going more for a low fi sound, this may not be a good mic for electric guitar for you. I have read that it is good for making acoustics sound more low fi and mellow.
The above quote is from Steve Albini. Honestly, it took me going through about 15 dynamic mics before buying this one because there's so much hype around the studio standard Shures and Sennheisers they obscure other valid contenders for the mic locker.

This is hands down my favorite mic for high gain guitar. I've owned a Beta 57A, an MD421, an SM7B, a Heil PR30, an e906, and an SM57. None of these mics compare to the this black beauty's detail in sound. In fact, the only kind of mic that can compare is a small diaphragm condenser. This has all the qualities I like in a condenser, without the massive bottom end and way over-extended top end (that makes high gain guitar sound like wite noise) that condensers have.

The upper mid detail of this mic makes the SM57's high mids sound ratty and unrefined in comparison. Actually, it even sounds more refined than an SM7B with the presence switch engaged. The highs remain cutting, yet smooth without being ice picky. It has a lot of bottom end but not as much as a condenser. I usually have to use a high pass filter to fit it in a mix.
I give it a 6 because there are no presence switches or polar pattern switches. It's just one hell of a good mic.
It feels like it's made of lead. I've dropped it a few times on carpet. No issues. Comes with a mic bag and clip. It's not bulky like an SM7B and its mic clip is suitable and easy to use.
This mic is the same price as many higher end dynamics.

      57 terminator

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

I use these like I would a 57. On snare and guitar cabs. It beats a 57 in every catergory but price. This gets a great sound with any source. It can be too detailed for some uses. EG sometimes you go to the 57 BECAUSE its got a funky midrange. This thing sounds better than many condensers in teh midrange.

      Great for live performance

      By Dick Rubin

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

I used Beyer 201s 30 years ago while touring sound for a variety of A list artists. Compact size, good directional response and robust construction make them perfect on the drum kit -- sound great on snares, toms and even high hat, and will withstand a direct hit from a drumstick. A versatile and reliable performer under demanding circumstances.

      Satisfied

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

It's hard to find information and reviews on the Beyerdynamic M201 TG, so I thought I would help anyone interested in this mic. I have a 20 year-old version of this mic, in fact it says "Made in West Germany," but it looks and performs as if it were still new. Put a descent pre-amp behind it and it will come alive on an acoustic guitar with excellent detail. I really enjoy having it, as it is great for live sound reinforcement as well. I think it's a durable and dependable addition to anyone's mic collection.
