I am very much impressed with the range and the quality of sound the "Howler" projects. From the "highest" of highs to the down and "dirtiest" of lows. I play and/or practise daily and have never had a problem with the mic. Using primarily the Hohner Blues Harp and Special 20s, it truly delivers an amazing sound at either end of the harp. I find that the cord being hard-wired to the mic prevents an accidental disconnect (I've stepped on too many cords). The center detent on the volume control lets me know exactly where I am on the mic gain without looking at the knob. Having used the "Howler" for nearly a year, I am totally pleased with it's performance and recommend it to anyone, Pro or Hobbyist. The Red Howler is in my opinion, a great value.

The 4.9 Stars rating is the obvious result of industry spamming of the review section. This mic looks pretty good at first glance. From there, it's all downhill. The "handgrip" grooves are too far back to be of any use. That's not where you hold a bullet mic if you're trying to seal off the handcup. The cheapo dynamic, 100-6,000hz element is wimpy, thin, and devoid of any hint of drive, grit or compression. The mic is clearly an attempt to deceive the inexperienced player based on the "look" alone. Not a decent deal at even half the price. Save your $$, get a real harp mic.

Comments about Digital Reference Red Howler Harmonica Mic:

For the the price and the quality, you just can't go wrong. The kicker is the TONE. I tried one years ago with Fender Blues Junior and a couple of other tube amps and, about took my head off. I was impressed with the tone. I love my Astatic and EV vintage mics however ,pound for pound, this mic is a force to be reckoned with. The volume control with the detent is perfect and the R&D folks must of read my mind when they formed the shell with grips. I just recently purchased a Red Howler with hardly any time on it and, I am waiting for my Mesa Boogie 5/50 to arrive. I just can't imagine what the sound will be like, but I know it is going to be dangerously tasty. I highly recommend this michophone to any and all Harp Players.

Comments about Digital Reference Red Howler Harmonica Mic:

I saw one disser on this mic that claimed the 5 stars must have been some corporate thing to sell em and that cat is dead on wrong. I have been playing harp since 1971, Have quite the collection of vintage mics from shure green bullets from the 50's and 60's, many astatic JT30's etc etc. I got one of these red howlers as another harp playing friend loved his so I just had to check it out and gotta say, this mic has plenty of mojo. the finger grips are pretty cool and this here mic sounds great through any of my vintage amps as well as my newer ones. I highly recommend it a for the price, gonna be way hard to beat it.

Comments about Digital Reference Red Howler Harmonica Mic:

Gives a vintage Blues sound even when played through my Yamaha PA Amp. But it really came alive when I plugged it into my Fender Tube Amp. It sounds great when I record with backing tracks. But when I sit in with a local band at night and start whaling on a blues number it really grabs everyone's attention.

A perfect equivalent of the green bullet and slightly warmer sound. Fights feedback well. Work best to just run thru the guitar pedal train with some delay, compression, and a touch of tremelo...Paul Butterfield all over again.

The Red Howler is every bit as good as the Green Bullet at a much lower price . Works best with a tube amp, we use it with a Fender Excelsior.
