Pros

  • banjo yes vocals too
  • guitar mandolin fiddle
  • The best replacement for:
  • the SM57 for blue grass

Cons

  • mic holder not that tight

Best Uses

  • less feed back and clear
  • live sound, more gain

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

I needed to replace my out dated mics used for instruments bluegrass group after much research and testing I finally decided on the Cobalt 4, so much better and with less problems than the 57s and the detail of the instruments coming out sold me, more gain and less feed back problems. Better sound all around.

    Not a good replacement for a 57

    By Nate A. Fredrick

    from Bay Area

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

I was hoping this would be a good, low-cost alternative to the classic SM57 for recording drums.
I was impressed by the quality feel of this mic, which seems solid, and would probably handle some abuse. Unfortunately, the sound DOES NOT compete wth a 57. The Cobalt 4 sounds tinny in comparison, and not in a pleasant way. Could be good for other things, but it is not a mic I would use for close-micing drums.

    Nice sound, Durable

    By Marcus R.

    from Lansford, PA

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

I got these mics so I didn't have to use PHANTOM power(for overheads) they really worked very nicely. They are a little heavy, they slipped out a couple of times. So watch your heads!! Great for instrument miking also. Picks up everything for guitar(acoustic) I haven't use them for amp miking yet. So far, every purpose that I used them for, they have never let me down!! That's going on four years now.

    Not too shabby

    By OqH2LdNPf

    from Arlington, VA

Comments about Electro-Voice EV Cobalt 4 Mic:

The buy one get one deal with these was the main thing that sold me on this. I was too cheap to get a 57, and I needed two mics for miking both mine and my other guitarist's cab. They're nice and durable, but they color my tone a bit too much for my taste, more treble than I'd prefer. If you're looking for just recording your ideas, it's perfect. If you're looking for pristine, accurate sound reproduction, I'd go with something more high-end. However for the price, they can't be beat.
