this mic is an excellent choice for live performances. it has a full and balanced sound that cuts through a mix of heavy guitars. i was surprised that this kind of quality could be attained at this price. EV does a great job with their COBALT series of mics. Many of you might want to compare it to a SM58. DON'T compare the two. Each mic is excellent. The EV has just the right sound color to make you smile as soon as you hear it. Most sound engineers won't have any problem putting this mic in the right spot of the mix. The one thing a SM58 has going for it is familiarity. [*] This mic won't be a problem either. I didn't notice any issue with handling noise and the weight distribution feels natural and balanced in your hand. rock on.

I've only had it for a week. It seems to record okay, although I put a pop fiter on it. For some reason though theres a low hum when I let it sit in the holder on the michrophone stand. But when I take it out of the holder the hum goes away. I'm wondering if it's picking up some vibration in the house. So, it seems okay, but it is a bit spooky at this point.

A real sleeper of a high quality microphone

Comments about Electro-Voice Cobalt 9 Mic:

I needed a spare mic for gigging... in case mine or someone elses took a dive then we'd have this reasonable 2nd string available to get through the gig. Wrong. These are as good as the stage standards out there. Since we use mic stands, handling noise is not a factor for our application. Right now you can get a pair of these for the same money you'd spend on just one of the standards. Take it from your old Uncle Dick, its hard work trying to make some decent money doing this singing and playing and shlepping for 5 to 6 hours a night. Spend it wisely. Or work for Halliburton.

Okay for Light Singing, No Screaming

Pros

  • Compact
  • Durable
  • Easy To Use
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Limited Functions
  • Poor Sound Quality

Best Uses

Comments about Electro-Voice Cobalt 9 Mic:

It sounds fine with light singing, but if you scream or project loudly, the quality diminishes extremely. The sound cracks and is very distorted. It's fine for coffee shop acoustic gigs, but terrible for a rock or metal band.

Comments about Electro-Voice Cobalt 9 Mic:

This is a durable, great sounding microphone for the price and it is solidly made, too. I sing backup vocals and I use the Cobalt 9 for practice and performances - it hasn't let me down. The vocal pattern helps eliminate feedback and the mic is stout, with a high-quality feel. Highly recommended for the price and especially if it is on sale!
