Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I was in a country band way back in 86. The band decided to up grade the stage mics and decided on the EV PL80. This mic was used, dropped, banged on and caught in the rain a couple of times. It's now 2014 and I found my old road bag. WHOE!! My PL80 was in it. It had 9 years on the road and many many local bars saw it on stage after that. There isn't a heck of a lot of paint left on it BUT!! It still works as it did. I plugged it into my Tascam MK2 2400 console and it sounded like a dream come true. Sure, there are better mics and as far as everyones comment on boominess, hey...isn't this what tone controls are for? ROll off a little bottom end or very low mids with the parametric EQ (sweepable mids) and your problem is solved. Best of all, make sure you use all the same mics on stage so you don't end up killing all the EQ frequencies. Also, be grateful for the bottom end.
Perfect example is, my keyboard player sings and his voice is thin (as is mine), the extra low end fills that void. Sometimes people don't think when they do things. Just like when someone with a 50 watt Marshall complains that is too loud and can't use the amp, but it has a pre amp gain control?? Nuff said. I'd put a picture or clip of the mic working on hear but we can't do that. I would definitely recommend this mic for road use. You can A/B with many mics and find differences but you have to just decide what fits your needs the best. I personally never liked the SM58 because I felt it didn't have enough "umph" behind it. I do sound too and frankly, I was thinking of trying different vocal mics and when I found my trusty old PL80, my decision was made. The Tan looks VERY COOL on stage too!! Oops, looks like we CAN add images so here it is!!

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

Great mic, I caught on sale as a restock. Basically like a regular SM-58, or AKG D-9000 series. No switch, but I knew that when buying, so no problem. Great deal at 1/2 price of an SM-58. Restock just like new in box.

    Great vocal mic

    By Michael Propst

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I'm a big fan of the EV PL series, my band uses them. But I do think the PL80 is the bees' knees even among those. It costs just a bit more than the PL24 but the improvement is there, and the retro look is very cool (especially on the PL80c in the old-school colors). The price puts it in competition with the SM58 which is pretty ubiquitous, but the slightly brighter response curve and the supercardioid pattern might actually sway you in this direction (and barring that... maybe the looks?).
This has a supercardioid pattern, which will help you reduce feedback in live situations. In fact, I've used this mic with huge amounts of horrifying vocal effects and with just a little gating I've eliminated feedback altogether. The form factor is stylish and retro, just like Sinatra's old-school PL80. Frequency response curve is good, brighter than a SM58.
Extremely well made. The old mics this is modeled off of were famous for their indestructibility. EV still seems to have an eye for that.
Hard to beat. All the PL series dynamics are a good value, but this one is the best sounding.

Good mic, but consider the PL84

    By Gear Guy

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I picked up this mic because I was tired of handing my expensive mics to strangers only to have them tap them on the cap,beat-box into them. and try to wrestle them out of each other's hands. Based on my experience with the PL84, I figured it was a safe bet. As it turns out, this mic far exceeded my expectations. I have used it in place of my other mics on occassion when I perform to see if it could keep up. It does a good job.
I can't argue with the other positive reviews for this mic... for the money, this mic is GREAT! When I saw it at this price, I bought it mostly out of curiousity. I use/own Shure, EV, and Audix mics. This mic can get the volume output of a 58a and has good rejection. The sound quality far exceeds the price. My only advice is that if you can spring the extra few bucks and have access to Phantom power, I would recommend that you check out the PL84. My only complaint about this mic... the handling noise is more noticeable than other mics I have used... although this is the least expensive mic in my locker.
    Quality far exceeds price.
I don't think you can do better than this mic at this price. The only reason I give it an 8 is because for just a little more you can get a PL84

    not bad

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I compared this mic with the PL44 which is a supercardioid dynamic mic alson, and also compared it with the PL84 and the RE410. By far the RE410 has the best sound, but I would put the PL44 in second place. I thought it had a nicer balance than the PL80, which was little more boomy sounding with a little too much bass. The PL44 reminds me of an SM58 (although I didn't have one on hand to compare it). The PL84 is louder, but I liked the sound of PL44 more. Plus the price is a little better. I got all of them on sale, so they were a great buy. Overall great mics. :)

As good or better than Shure SM57/58 for vocals

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I recently purchased a some of these mics and I am very satisfied. We use sm57's & sm58's for vocals and they are great mics. These new EV PL80 mics are just a little bit better to my ears. I have been A/B-ing them for the past day or so trying to get a good handle on which does what better. PL80's are a little bit hotter and have richer mid/low mid's and cut through better with close proximity without making my voice too boomy. Both Shure mics have quieter handling noise. The handling noise of the Pl80 is still very quiet though. All of the mics do well with off axis rejection can be really cranked before feedback is an issue. I watched a video where EV dropped a mic from 3 or 4 feet without denting the grille. Any sm58 user knows the outcome of that situation.

    Great job by EV!

    By Russ-G4.u-

Comments about Electro-Voice PL80 Dynamic Microphone:

I just picked up the 3-fer deal on the PL80a, and after auditioning the mics, I can say I'm really impressed. I've used a lot of different brand name mics, and these are definitely some of the best in this price range. They are crisper and cleaner in the highs and midrange than the venerable SM-58, with a nice, tight boost in the bass. They also maintain their directional pattern when held by the windscreen, or "cupped," something a lot of performers do these days. The 58 tends to go omni when cupped, and this can cause feedback.I do wish the handling noise were a little less, but it's mostly in the lower frequencies and can be reduced with a HPF, which helps, and overall it's not bad. To top it all off, the output on these things is HOT, which is really great! Get one--or 3! I'm glad they're in my mic arsenal now!
