      Heil Sound

A no-frills version of the award-winning PR 20—same sound but without the bling.

The HEIL PR 20 UT (Utility) is the award-winning dynamic PR 20 microphone. To help reduce the cost Heil pared down the packaging options. Specifications and performance characteristics remain at the high level that the PR 20 brings, wide frequency range, the ability to handle +140dB SPL and -35dB of rear rejection that makes the PR 20 and PR 20 UT the answer for a wide range of professional applications. No cutting corners on the microphone here—open a PR 20 UT and you are getting a PR 20.

The PR 20 UT has been designed for recording, live sound reinforcement, and commercial broadcast applications. This is a very rugged microphone, making it ideal for professional use. The PR 20 UT achieves its exceptional performance by using a special magnet structure and a large aluminum 1-1/8" low-mass voice coil assembly. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind the source entering them out of phase. This produces a very linear cardioid pattern and reduces the proximity effect while achieving the extreme articulation across its smooth, 50Hz-18kHz frequency response.

This new Heil element is usable in extreme high sound pressure levels, and is immune to overload conditions making it perfect for vocals. It produces a beautifully smooth audio response without the inconvenience of phantom or outside DC powering. This is one great live vocal mic that has finally replaced the “ball mic” of the 1970s. All Heil PR 20 UT microphones come in a leatherette carrying bag with mic clip, one stainless mesh grill, and an acoustical foam windscreen.

      Bob Heil explains the difference
Heil Sound's president and founder Bob Heil explains, "The PR 20 is shipped standard with an abundance of accessories which includes interchangeable gold, silver, and black screw-on grill screens, plus a plush padded carrying case. While many customers appreciate and use these items, there is a large group of musicians, sound companies and contractors who need a simple 'one-take' PR 20. By streamlining the packaging, we can dramatically lower the price without one single alteration to the microphone itself. Think of the PR 20 UT as a PR 20 without the 'bling'!"

      Great Microphone

Comments about Heil Sound PR 20 UT (Utility) with On/Off Switch:

I needed a microphone because the musicians in my band thought i should sing a song. Not just be the eye candy sitting behind the drums.I was going to get another brand mic but the salesman I spoke with on the phone suggested this one saying it is good for a drummer because it won't pick up as much ambient sounds from the drums. It appears that he knew what he was talking about.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 20 UT (Utility) with On/Off Switch:

I purchased this mic as a drummer who also sings. I'm familiar with the PR22 vocal mic and I love it. The PR22 has a cleaner, less lower midrangy sound than the PR20. Especially at close proximity. The PR20 was the only Heil mic I could find with a switch. Crisp high end for improved clarity in vocals. Definitely a cleaner sound than any of it's SM counterparts. My only critique is that there's a decent electrical "POP" when using the switch.

          Looking for a Drummer Mic

          By Willow Pony

          from New Mexico, Southwest USA

Comments about Heil Sound PR 20 UT (Utility) with On/Off Switch:

I've had the mic for over a week, played one gig, and done a couple of rehearsals, and I like what I hear. I have been listening to a variety of mics-58s, Sennheiser 935, Audix, Audio technica, to name a few. I tried this one and I like it cause of the vocal projection. I use a mic for proximity effect or moving away to get sounds I want, and it included a windscreen. I haven't used that yet, but I do like the way it looks and sounds. I am getting the next one up from this and try that next. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the non switch version. The reason I have a switch is as a drummer, I harmonize, and next is lead vocal on a couple of songs, and I know I will be heard. Sorry SM 58.
