Heil Sound

Versatile vocal mic with minimal off-axis coloration and on/off switch.

The Heil Sound PR 35S has been designed for recording, live sound reinforcement, and commercial broadcast applications that require a smooth, flat response over a wide frequency range. The PR 35S was designed around the acclaimed PR 30 element and incorporates a sorbothane shock mount to give the best possible results.

The PR 35S achieves its exceptional performance by using a special magnet structure and a large aluminum 1-1/2" low-mass voice coil assembly. A carefully wound and placed hum bucking coil allows the PR 35S to be used close to video monitors without unwanted hum or buzz. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind the source. It then enters them out of phase thus producing a very linear cardioid pattern. This reduces the proximity effect while achieving the extreme articulation across its smooth 40Hz-18kHz frequency response.

The new Heil element can be used in extreme high sound pressure levels and is immune to overload conditions. It produces a beautifully smooth audio response without the inconvenience of phantom or outside DC powering.

The PR 35S has a cardioid pattern that offers the greatest rejection of unwanted audio at 180 degrees off axis, which is directly behind the microphone; there is virtually no off-axis coloration.

Supplied with a microphone clip that mounts to any 5/8"- 27 mic thread. It also comes with a leatherette carrying case.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 35S Large-Diaphram Dynamic Handheld Microphone W/ On/Off Switch:

Most ball mic's lose 1 whole octave for handling noise. These new Heil mic's don't do that. They give you 1 whole octave more in your voice. Very articulate voice. The 40% rear rejection really works well in live and recording situations. It doesn't madder how loud your amp is, these mic's do not break down on stage, or in the mix.
Very well made, I have the 22R and now the 35. I have 6 other well known brands of mic's. Nothing that I have or have used in the past can compare. Before you buy another mic plug one of these many Heil mic's in and test what you though could be better, hands down it will impress you.
These mic's are now winning Grammy awards for their quality of sound.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 35S Large-Diaphram Dynamic Handheld Microphone W/ On/Off Switch:

My band mates and I have always used SM58's and I never even thought I would change but I have to a Heil PR35. I've been doing lead vocals for over 40 years and was fixing to treat myself to a new SM58 when I stumbled across some reviews of the PR35. I ordered one and the guys at rehearsal one night could not believe the difference in gain and the studio quality of the sound. I used three fourths of the gain that i used with the SM58. Also, this mic does not pick up other instruments as much which helps in reducing noise and feedback from monitors. It also seems to be as solid as the SM58 but only time will verify if this is true.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 35S Large-Diaphram Dynamic Handheld Microphone W/ On/Off Switch:

I did not have to turn down the music mix on the Yorkville Tx4 sound system. I could hear and feel my voice booming over the mix with no feedback. I finally found a microphone that can keep up with the Tx4's. The on/off switch comes in handy.

Comments about Heil Sound PR 35S Large-Diaphram Dynamic Handheld Microphone W/ On/Off Switch:

First Note, I confirmed with Heil Sound Tech Svc. that the MF website lists this item incorrectly. Model Number PR35S (SKU #H70335000000000) DOES NOT have the 3-position roll-off switch as it is described on the Musicians Friend web site. If you order this, the box will say it has a roll-off, the directions will say it has a roll-off, the stock tag will say it has a roll off and the MF website will say it does too. It doesn't.

It does have an ON/OFF switch, but that does NOT affect roll-off and there is no small, push-button roll-off switch. Heil says this probably just has to do with MF's stock on hand.

          whew.

All that having been said, the mic sounds great for live vocals. I prefer it to a Senneheiser e935 and prefer it a lot over a Beta58. It's got more definition in the mids and is open without that sibilant quality. You may need to roll off the lows at the mixer a bit because it can get plosive easily (pop filter is included but I've not used it).

I sing and play live professionally and tour. Some shows I play with a full 7-piece rock band with two guitars, VERY hard-hitting drummer, horns and backup singers. Some tours I play as an acoustic act with guitar accompanist. Some shows are a stripped-down 4-piece rock format. This mic works great it each context. I take an e935, a Beta58 and this mic on the road but this is now my first choice mic.

I've not tried it for recording yet, but if you're looking for a solid vocal mic this is a great one.

One final note. About 20 years ago a friend gave my Bob Heil's book "Practical Guide for Concert Sound." I learned a lot form that book and have followed Bob for many years. His designs, like Rupert Neve's are so effective due mostly to their simplicity and consideration of the AUDIENCE. He definitely puts sound quality and personal attention above all else. When you call Heil Sound you get a real person answering the phone. They are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. You can not go wrong with their products. This mic is a great example.

I'm glad I have it in my kit.
