OVERVIEW

For singers in loud bands.

The Sennheiser e 838 microphone from the evolution 800 Series has been engineered for the vocalist who needs the vocals to cut through the band. Due to its excellent acoustic properties, the e 838 mic delivers a high signal output to cut through high on-stage sound levels with ease. A gentle presence boost to even tonal response ensures vocal clarity and projection. The balanced frequency response maintains signal quality when moving on and off-axis during performance. The minimal proximity effect provides for consistently clear bass-end performance when singing closer to, or further from the microphone. The cardioid pick-up pattern provides excellent feedback rejection and good isolation from incidental rear noise. The rugged metal construction and internal damping isolates handling noise.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

This is the clearest sounding dynamic cardioid microphone that I've ever used. It is much better than my old Shure SM58, great for cutting through the mix. I sing baritone and tenor and play (mostly) electric guitar, and I've never been able to hear myself so well over what I'm playing, other than when I'm using a much more expensive tube mic (which is more for studio work than live performances). That isn't to say that the Sennheiser 838 is particularly hot (although it is considerably more responsive than the Shure), but rather, the tonal range of this mic doesn't step on what I'm doing instrumentally. In my experience, most microphones in this price range sound muddy... not so with this one. In fact, it's quite the opposite. For what it's worth, I have also been able to use the 838 in a small practice room without getting feedback. As someone who has been a semi-professional musician for nearly twenty years, I highly recommend this microphone.

Seems real nice so far. The plastic mic holder snapped on my second gig. It was a tight fit for the mic. One side snapped off.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Originally got it to have some additional live vocal mic options in my sound gear when working with different vocalists because it was on sale, and it's replaced the SM58 in my personal live rig. Just tried it and liked it so much better for my voice that I've never gone back. Seems to my ear to be a bit less harsh in the top end than a SM58, and less boomy in the bottom than a EV 767a.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I've been shopping for a mic for quite a while. As a professional musician with over 30 years experience, I had access to lots of professional opinions. My final decision was between this Sennheiser or a Shure Beta 58. In the end I selected the Sennheiser. I used a Shure SM 58 for 30 years, but the Sennheiser characteristics were better for my female vocal range. I've gotten lots of compliments on it since I began using it less than a month ago. I'm totally satisfied with this selection given my specific vocal range.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

This mic seems to bring the vocals right out front. Feedback is almost non existant unless you have your reverb up too high and are right on top of the speakers. I have been using a Beyer mic for years but the E838 blows it away. I sing with a vocal group and I am now out front above the other singers. I also have an E835 wireless which is great also but I have a lot of trouble with feedback as it is very sensitive. If you are a lead singer, try this mic. You will not be disappointed.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Compared to a Shure sm58, much tighter low end and, that certain Sennheiser high end sparkle. If you have a lower register or a more powerful voice, this is the one for you. It cuts through the mix, not because of a higher output but because of the increased presence it has over a lot of other microphones. Feedback is really not an issue and the proximity effect you get with other mics is really not there (good or bad). I personally like it, it doesn't color the sound of your voice much at all. In other words, if you have a thin voice and depend on using the proximity effect of a mic to thicken your voice, this is not a good choice.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I've used the Sennheiser E835 for many years with the same lead singer of a band for whom I run sound. At a recent multi-band concert, we encountered a pre-set stage with an E838 in the lead singer's position. I didn't have another E835 with me so I decided to use the E838. I was very surprised that the lead singer sounded better with the E838 than the E835 with increased clarity and presence. I didn't have to adjust the channel EQ to add any presence boost or reduce low frequency plosives. The mic did it all for me. As soon as possible, I ordered an E838 and will use it for many of the lead singers I run sound for.
