I've been using microphones for Live and Studio work for over 45 years, so that's a lot of mics. Not considering it's potential Studio applications, I've used the standard SM58 for my live vocals for much of this time, have always tried a few others to improve my live sound, but always came back to the standard. I think I've finally found something that suits me even better now. The balanced, honest, articulate character of the mic just sounds "right" and does easily come through well in the mix(I don't want to use the word "cut" through, as that can be somewhat done with EQ). It's more of an "articulate character" that this mic has with my voice. Everyone has different voice prints, but this suits all my articulation aspects and ranges from lowest notes to the falsetto, and everything in between....well balanced reproduction. That's what I want from a vocal mic, and it may take a longterm use to see if I ever come back to the 58.....time will tell.

Comments about Sennheiser e 840 Handheld Professional Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

Plain and simple, this Mic sounds terrific! You can compare it to anything you want , and the bottom line is it never gets buried in the mix and it never sounds shrill or harsh! My last Sennheiser lasted me about 15 years and still works fine! I do about 150 shows per year, so reliability is not a question! Love it!

Comments about Sennheiser e 840 Handheld Professional Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I picked up one of these when they were on sale in the "Stupid Deal of the Day" section. I was using a Sennheiser E835 prior, which is a very good mic, but the E840 is so much better. Granted, it doesn't have a switch, but with the E840's ability to reject feedback you won't need to switch it off when you're not singing. The clarity and power of this mic is remarkable. You won't be sorry spending the extra 30 Washingtons more for this mic over an SM58. Trust me...

The E 840 has a little more output than my Electrovoice Cobalt 9 Professional Microphone . It is a little better sounding for my voice with less feedback than the E/V Cobalt 9 microphone.

I'm using this Sennheiser e840 with an ART Tube Project Series Mic Preamp Unit, and my results are simply perfect. The sound is warmth, crisp and smooth at the same time. I have a condenser Blue Encore 300 (that is a very very very detailed and good sounding mic), and i prefer this Sennheiser-ART combination...

GREAT value for a quality mic with clearer sound than a SM-58 (notice how every review compares it to a Shure SM-58), but depending on the singer, I think it lacks some dynamics and WARMTH, especially on the lower ranges...tends to be present and "midrangey" (which does cut through). Not a bad mic, but maybe that's why you still see big-name artists today using an SM-58, with all the choices available.
