OVERVIEW

Vintage look and feel . . . state-of-the-art sound.

An unmistakable stage icon for 70 years, the Shure 55SH Series II Unidyne Vocal Microphone features a signature satin chrome-plated die-cast casing for pure vintage look and feel with modern acoustic components to meet today's performance standards. This microphone is excellent for vocal pickup with its characteristic Shure presence peak.

The 55SH Series II microphone has a cardioid (unidirectional) polar pickup pattern that minimizes sound pickup from the rear of the microphone. This allows the Model 55SH Series II to be used in close proximity to loudspeakers without creating feedback problems, and it can perform under adverse acoustic conditions where omnidirectional microphones cannot.

The 55SH Series II has a low-impedance balanced output designed for connection to microphone inputs rated at 75 to 300 ohms. The microphone features a cartridge shockmount to reduce stand noise, an On/Off switch, and an attached, self-tensioning, 5/8"-27 thread swivel mount. This microphone is ideal for public address or theater-stage sound systems, as well as for broadcasting, recording, and other sound applications where a stand-mounted microphone with a classic look is desirable.

FEATURES
  • Classic appearance, modern performance
  • Frequency response tailored for speech, vocals and instrumental music
  • Cardioid directional pattern for optimum performance in adverse acoustic environments
  • Shock-mounted cartridge minimizes stand-transmitted noise, ensures quiet operation
  • Rugged chrome-plated die-cast casing and mechanical design for reliability under rigorous conditions

A great vocal stage mic that delivers old-timey looks that are just right for jazz, swing, rockabilly, and blues acts.

Sure this thing is a tank, I've dropped it a few times yes. The foam screen behind the front metal cover is very thin, and erodes over time from your nasty alcohol breath. I replaced it with thicker foam, which took out alot of the pop. Just 4 screws to remove the front cover. I've had someone step on the on/off switch smashing it in, and my drummer and I doctored it back to health no problem. The final straw was the input would get stuck in the mic chord and stretch out the wires, ultimately ruining the ground. This was due to a stripped out screw on the side of the handle, and plugging, and uplugging repeatidly after practice, and gigs.. So I've retired this mic after 2 years of giging, house parties, and hours of band practice. Loved it, got tons of complements, it was a signature piece for the band, but this mic is ultimately meant to mount on a stand, and not rocked out in your hand.

As a blues/jazz musician, I got this mic for the retro looks. Well, trust me. It might not look as cool, but get a SM58 instead. The 55SH might have the looks, but after a gig or 2 with it, you'll go back to the sm58.This mic just can't handle a live gig. It might do OK for a bossa nova set at a smallish coffee venue, but that's about it. Your vocals will have no definition, depth or punch with this mic. Feedback becomes a little more of an issue, too.Because I own one, whenever I see one of these on the bandstand, I instantly see through the good looks and instead notice the pretentiousness of the singer. This mic costs more than an SM58, isn't as versatile, and sounds worse. Don't waste your money on accentuating your vanity.

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:

Had mine over 10 years. It is the only mic I have used during this time. I immediately removed the on/off switch to prevent accidentally turning it off. Then took an old Peavey metal mic case and customized it to fit the 55SH. I play bars, boats, floats, churches, weddings, auctions, golf tournaments, special events, etc. Temperature ranges from 100 degrees in locked Jeep to 20 below here in Maine. Hasn't damaged the mic. I typically use it "Elvis style" plugged into my Trace Acoustic combo amp which sits behind me. Kill the 10K Hz EQ on the amp and NO feedback despite close proximity in front of the amp. Looks great and incredibly rugged.

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:

I like the looks of this mic for retro uses. I bought this one for a 40's-50's community theater event. I looks great and sounds good when used with a pre-amp. It does need a pre-amp to have clear sound and enough head room and will have a fuzzy sound without a some pre-amplification.

            Worth The Money

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:

I have had mine for a year. I was drawn in by the iconic look, it was a fetish for me. As it turns out, it is an ideal mic for my purposes. My band practices in a SMALL space, and this mic excels at NOT picking up background noise. It has a small, focused sweet spot you have to hit but the sound is great and there are no microphonics to deal with. It is what it is, fantastic for dealing with loud, small spaces. Not made for use as a condenser or instrument mic but if you need a great mic that won't raise hell in your practice space, this is it.

            INCREDIBLE MIC!!!!!

            By Sacrifice

            from Lincolnton NC

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:

I love this microphone like a child! It is so faithful when it comes to recordings and gigs. I lead worship in a cockpit hanger. The acoustics in the hanger are so vast, that the mic makes the place sound like another world. On recordings, you MUST have a decent preamp to be able to give this baby enough juice, if not, the quality will be very fuzzy and it won't pick up your backup vocals or guitar like it is suppose to. Nevertheless, the mic is amazing, looks awesome and is faithful to give it'smax preformance whether I'm on stage or in the studio. I highly recomend this microphone to the serious musician! :)
