OVERVIEW

The Shure SM48-LC Microphone offers many of the same qualities as the famous SM58 but at a lower price. This unidirectional dynamic mic is designed for professional sound reinforcement, studio recording, and broadcasting. It maintains a true cardioid pattern throughout its frequency range, ensuring high gain before feedback and rejection of off-axis sound. Frequency response is tailored for vocals with a presence rise in the midrange to brighten performance. A low-frequency roll-off is provided for controlling proximity effect. A shock-mounted cartridge, steel mesh grille, and an integral pop filter make the Shure SM48 tough and resistant to handling noise.

Shure sound at an affordable price.

FEATURES
  • Cardioid pickup pattern rejects off-axis sound and provides superior gain before feedback
  • Frequency response tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff to control proximity effect
  • Shock-mounted cartridge for exceptional ruggedness and reduced handling noise
  • Built-in "pop" filter that reduces explosive breath sounds and wind noise
  • Supplied stand adapter and carrying/storage bag
  • Legendary Shure quality and ruggedness

I have been using SM-58 mics since about 1975. I have never had one go down and still own my very first one which I bought used in 1975. It still sounds great on the PA. I now own three SM-58 mics but about five years ago I needed two more vocal mics for a job/show where we were having background vocalists. I have other PA mics (AKG and Behringer) but they have unique sounds of their own and don't work well with the SM-58's. With five open vocal mics on stage I wanted a more uniform sound. Because this situation was to be a temporary deal (we don't normally use backgound vocalists), I used my three SM-58's and bought two SM-48 mics. I found that with a little EQ at the mixer (to open the upper mid a little) and a little more gain on the mic pad (just a touch more) the SM-48 sounded and responded very much like the SM-58. Having that uniformity on stage allowed me to crank up the monitors and all the musicians were very pleased with the sound. I have a Mackie based system (Mackie board, two Mackie TH-15 powered speakers on the floor and two Mackie TH-12 powered speakers on stands with three floor monitors on stage powered by a QSC amp. The SM-48 cuts through as well as my SM-58's.

Several reviewers mentioned that these were not great recording mics and I agree. They were not intended to be. Shure makes some high quality condenser recording mics and if you are looking for a recording mic don't expect much from the SM-48. It's EQ curve and proximity effect is designed for PA work. By the same token I have an assortment of high quality condenser mics in my home studio (Rode, AKG and Audio Technica) that are excellent recording mics but because of their flat full frequency response would make horrible sounding PA mics. The SM-48 like the SM-58 was a mic designed for quality PA work and these SM-48's are a real bargain and I gave them five stars because nothing in this price range comes close in quality and durability.

For me and my use it's a 4 . Save your money and buy the real thing . You will be much happier . By the way , I use a PreSonus Firestudio Mobile , PreSonus Studio Pro Ver 2 DAW and a Carvin Vintage 16 . Epi Standard LP with Gibson 490 R & T Pups . So ! It is a deficency in the Mic .
I think it's a OK Mic but that's it . It seems to produce tin like sound when amplifying a Guitar Amp nomatter where I place the mic . For Speaking voice it's great but for serious music , it's lacking tone .
Hey , It's a Shure ! That's very good .
I wanted to use it to mic my Carvin EL84 Tube Amp . It doesn't make the cut . It is deffinatly not a SM57 or SM58 by any standards for any use .

This is a very nice mic from Shure. It may not be the Sm58, but we don't mind, it's working great. It still feels like quality, and I can't complain about the price! Would buy it again! You should too...

Comments about Shure SM48-LC Vocal Microphone:

Looking for a good spare mic, I ran across a great deal at Musician's Friend on the Shure SM48. All my life I've used various versions of the SM58 - SM57, SM56, 545, 565, and they are what they are: really rugged, dependable, and consistent. Not the clearest sounding mics around, especially if you have a "manly" voice, and you have to sing close to the mic to avoid feedback in a loud band setting. The famous Shure proximity effect has to be tamed with board EQ, and you learn to get in the habit of always setting any Shure mic used for vocals at around 2:00 or so on the highs, and 10:00 on lows, and then adjust to suit the individual voice(s).

I have other mics, with more modern design elements (SM58s are basically a 1950s design), that I prefer for vocals, such as Sennheisers and EVs, which tend to have better upper midrange articulation then the typical Shure, but it's always great to keep at least one on hand, since there's no question about the reliability - it will work, always, no matter what. Never had an SM48 before, and I was surprised at how good it sounds - crisper overall than the SM58, less low end proximity boom, smooth top end. It's not as loud as a 57 or 58 at similar gain settings, but that's no big deal at all - just dial in some more gain. Very nice, especially for a "spare" mic, and it will probably get used very soon, and no doubt it'll ace the gig.

People - this is a no-brainer: buy this mic, you won't be sorry, especially at this price.

Needed an extra mic to mic up the underside of a hi hat for a session this weekend. remembered that i had a couple of these. tried it out... and wow the recording i got off the HH sounded crisp and clean. dare i say a little better than my 57 that I usually use there.

I wouldn't buy it for micing amps or vocals. but its going to be kept with my drum mics now.

I'm very disappointed there isn't an on/off switch direct on the microphone. I even explained to the gear head what I was using the equipment for. Very disappointed. I would not recommend using this for announcing race results.
