      OVERVIEW

Distinct tones ideal for special accents and effects.

The large size Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal has a deep bell shape and a low pitch, while the smaller Zil-Bel features a bright, singing, musical tone. Both exhibit the unique raw qualities derived from the authentically traditional pouring and casting manufacturing technique that leaves slight imperfections on the mirror-like cymbal's polished surface.

Alright, heres the real deal about what the Zil Bel has to offer: Both sizes are great for any kind of metal or hard styles of music, if you play anything besides that I wouldn't recommend adding this cymbal to your setup. You can hear these cymbals at zildjian.com before you purchase them which I suggest doing. There are infact TWO VERSIONS of the zil bel, I know because I own all four. The newer zil bel's are easy to indentify because they have a beveled or flat edge which enhances clarity and volume, the older versions do not have a flat beveled edge and most argue that these versions are not loud enough to hear with the rest of your kit. I totally agree with that arguement and too bad those people did not purchase the newer version because it gives the zil bel's a bad rep...

These cymbals are mainly used for accents in most contemporary styles and are not to be "riden" on! Unless of course you are blasting. A few bands that use these cymbals are, August Burns Red, Between The Buried And Me, and Born Of Osiris. I hope my review was helpful toward your purchase, thanks for reading.

ive played both sizes of these bells and ive heard other drummers play them and i dont understand the hype. i wanted a bell and looked at these but theyre very one dimensional and arent even effective unless played upside down, and then they only have one place to hit them, and at this point the cymbal basically becomes useless unless your music needs no dymnamics. i kept looking and ended up buying a 9" sabian radia cup chime (the terry bozzio signature) and i love it. its darker and quieter than the zil-bel but it still cuts, and because it has a lip that you can hit plus the bell it works dynamically in the music. plus, because its hand hammered, it blends perfectly with my hh raw bell dry ride.

I grabbed the 6 inch from a local music store a few months ago because my ride doesn't have that distinct bell sound that I need for certain things and the Zil Bell works out great. It has a very bright ping that cuts through just about anything and has a very nice ring out as well.

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

The zil bel is definitely an interesting product. It is very bright sound and much of what you would expect from a bell. I stacked in on top of my ride to make it easy to hit (from muscle memory.) I do like it but in a quiet setting it rings out too long for my taste. Also when playing loudly with other live instruments it would only be heard if properly mic'ed. All in all I like it but it's not all I hoped for.

            A Really Great Bell

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

I LOVE this bell!!! It was totally worth it. It's very bright, and a great accent cymbal to add to your setup.
Oh and for anyone interested, I would highly recommend going to a local music store to listen to one of these, because online videos do it NO justice. I had listened online a few times and thought it was ok, but once I played it in real life, I fell in love instantly. It's a perfect "Ping!", and fairly rapid decay(which I prefer). Plus it's pretty.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with a bell fancy.

Had the 6" for years, and just got the 9.5"

            By Chunchunchun

            from Gloucestershire, UK

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

The best bell going. As I said in my previous review (under the name Chunchunchun), these bells walk all over the bells made by every other company. Stack Black Metal bells and Meinl Classics bells are too "airy" and soft sounding (which is great for percussive effects but not the best for metal), and the Sabian Alu-Bells are just too dry for my personal liking. The new Meinl M-Series 8.5" bell looks interesting, but I'd suspect that the traditional finish and smaller size means that the Zil-Bel will still have the edge in terms of colour and projection.
I only gave a 7 for features because they are just bells - they go ding. However, there are a fast amount of musical uses for them. I have the 6" mounted just beneath my hi-hats, so it's great for adding colour to fills and tom patterns as it's easily accessible with both hands. The 9.5" is mounted above and to the right of my right hand crash. I actually recommend giving it its own stand and mounting it "right way up", so the logo is facing up and the curve facing down. You can strike the edge and it will sound the same as it does inverted, but you also can strike the bow (or is it the bell?) with the shoulder of the stick and it produces a clearer, slightly brighter attack without losing volume. The 9.5" works really well for accenting, or for putting in the middle of a driving pattern on open hats or washing out on a ride or crash. Both bells work great for counting in after a stop, or before a breakdown.

Also, a lot of people say they're too quiet and the sustain is too long. They're not and it isn't. They're extremely thick, what do you expect the sustain to be like? Behind the kit the 6" may sound quiet, but it projects very well through the mix on stage. Mind you, the positioning of my 6" means it may bleed through a little on the snare mic, but this is with no overheads. I'm yet to use my 9.5" live, but I've heard a few live and they cut amazingly well. In a full mix or even just with crashes, both of the bells' long sustain comes down to a short, strong ping.
These bells are SOLID. My 9.5 weighs nearly 3lbs, and there is no way you could ever crack or break them. My 6" has been dropped a couple of times by people "helping out" with setup on stage and it's absolutely fine. My one problem with quality is if you like your stuff look pristine. They may be shiny, but they'll be covered in little pits and imperfections from the factory - they're supposed to be. Mine actually have a couple of what look like deep scratches. When I got my 9.5" (brand new from Zildjian), it had these big scratches already, and some of the logos were partially scuffed away in a way that led me to believe it had been stacked in a pile with others and scratched about a fair bit. It's fine for me, I polish my cymbals so the logos come off anyway, but it might be a problem for you.
I love the sound, but they are very expensive for what they are, especially compared to the bells available from other companies. However, I personally don't feel any other bell comes close to the way that these sound, so I think they're worth the extra money.

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

I have the 6". It's fantastic. It's sweet, clear and loud. I don't know what the other people are talking about it being quiet. It certainly packs a punch. If you hit it too hard, the overtones get kinda nasty, but otherwise it's great.

            The Best Bell out there!

            By Hammy0924

            from Indianapolis, IN

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

This is the best bell out there. It isn't too melodic, and it doesn't completely destroy your cymbals. Has a little more sustain than I thought it would, but tightening helped. It sounds great combined with other bells, especially the Meinl Clasics High Bell. Definitely get this one, even though it's a little expensive for how small it is.

Still head and shoulders above the competition

            By Chunchunchun

            from Gloucestershire, UK

            Comments about Zildjian Zil-Bel Cymbal:

I've used the 6" bell for the last few years and it sounds simply awesome. What a lot of the reviewers don't seem to understand is this bell is all about projection. It's true that on stage behind the kit I can barely hear it under the guitars and my crashes, but watching videos of the gig it's the loudest thing on the stage, cuts through ALL the other sounds with no trouble at all. Maybe not ideal if you're just playing in your bedroom all the time but for the gigging drummer it's perfect. I've paired it up with a Stagg Black Metal bell, behind the kit that's much louder, but again out front the Zildjian dominates it in terms of volume, cut and just pure tone. I'm intending to pick up the 9.5" to replace the Stagg, a few of my friends in other bands have them and the sound is just so meaty, and SUPER loud.
