Ever since George Beauchamp created the first guitar pickup in the 1920's, guitar players obsessed with finding the perfect tone have been replacing the pickups on their electric guitars. Most of the classic guitars have become so because of their unique sound - a Stratocaster sounds different from a Telecaster, which in turn sounds different from a Jazzmaster, because they are all fitted with variants of the single coil pickup.

Once you’ve found an electric guitar, the fun doesn’t have to end there. There are some pretty unique and easy ways to customize your new instrument that can quite literally give you a whole new sound and tone.  Considering the style of music you’ll mostly be playing is the first step in deciding what pickup is right for you. Single coil pickups like the EMG Sax Active Single Coil Pickup Set or the Lace Hot Gold Single Coil operate using a single row of magnets encased in wire.

Humbucking pickups on the other hand cancel or ‘buck’ the hum completely by pairing 2 coils placed in opposite orientations and the interference is eliminated. Humbucker pickups are typically associated with Gibson style guitars and can produce a broad variety of tones, from a warm jazz sound to a beefy hard rock tone. Of course there are fender guitars with humbuckers, just as there are Gibsons with single coil pickups - the p90 is a notable pickup used on early Gibson Les Pauls as well as guitars such as the Epiphone casino.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade from your factory included pickup or want to truly customize you guitar, there are many options available to you. Once you figure out exactly what you’re going for, you can easily install most pickups with a little help from your local repair man or luthier. Pickups are a great way to change your sound without investing in a whole new instrument.
