OVERVIEW

A classic Epiphone acoustic-electric guitar.

For almost 20 years, the Epiphone PR-5E acoustic-electric guitar has taken the stage with countless musicians. Designed by Epiphone in 1990, its distinctive body shape was patterned after Epiphone's classic 335 guitars such as the Sheraton and Casino. But instead of a double-cutaway, it features a unique, single "Florentine" or sharp cutaway. The result is a large lower bout providing excellent lows and solid mid-range with easy access to the upper frets on the neck.

The premium select spruce top uses a hand-scalloped, proprietary X-bracing pattern. Combined with the slightly arched mahogany back and mahogany sides, the PR-5E provides a sweet tone that projects well even when unplugged. Its Mahogany neck with SlimTaper profile, makes the PR-5E very easy and comfortable to play without fatigue. Premium die-cast kidney machine heads for tuning accuracy and stability with premium gold hardware and split-diamond, pearloid fingerboard inlays make the PR-5E an extraordinary value.

Recently updated with Epiphone's eSonic preamp and Nanoflex pickup system, the PR-5E comes alive when plugged in. Made in cooperation with Shadow Germany, the eSonic preamp features a built-in, easy to use tuner. When engaged, the guitar's output is automatically muted-with no "popping" noise-making it a perfect choice for stage use. Other controls on this state-of-the-art preamp include master volume, bass, treble, EQ shape, low battery indicator and a phase switch to help eliminate unwanted feedback.

The preamp uses two 2032 lithium watch batteries that are not only lightweight, but provide significantly longer life than heavy 9V batteries. Under the PR-5E's compensated saddle is Shadow's proprietary Nanoflex low-impedance pickup. Not a piezo, this unique flexible sensing material features integrated active electronics and picks up not only string vibration but also top and body vibrations as well for a truly acoustic tone without the harshness of piezos. Case sold separately.

For the price, I am very pleased with this guitar. I love the slim body and neck which makes it easy to play. The sound is great coming from this guitar, and even better plugged in. The finish is beautiful in the natural color. The cutaway looks great and provides easy access. I love the headstock and the gold tuners because they look great. I was unsure about this when I bought it. When I finally got it though, I fell in love with it. And no this is not a Gibson, Taylor, Martin, or any other high end guitar and it would be crazy to even compare it to them as some have done so. A lot of us are strapped for cash and this is great for the money. So, give it some thought if you have been looking for a budget guitar.

The main thing that I was "really" disapointed with was Epiphone as a company, really poor customer support. Epiphone is a subsidiary of Gibson and I expected better treatment. When I emailed the main support, and after "going back and forth" in regards to the neck and bridge, they wanted "me" to ship them the guitar at "my" expensive.. not worth it when you add on insurance as well. I can still play the guitar, and the finish looks good, but the action on the neck it is just not right because of the neck and bridge "defects".
Finish is nice, sound is awesome.. nice low end for a cutaway. The pickup system is very nice as well.
The neck has a small bough in mine. Truss rod and saddle height adjustment did not help. Also the bridge is lifting just a bit in the back, not enough to worry about, but it does not make me happy.
If the neck and bridge did not have any problems, I would have rated this guitar a lot higher. Good for the price again if the defects were not there.

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

First off I want to say that my PR5-E is unlike any other in the world. It is a one-of-a-kind roundback prototype that I won as a door prize at a Musician's Friend store grand opening in Harahan, Louisiana about 16 years ago.

The neck is what impressed me most about this guitar. I found it much more comfortable than my father's Martin D-35. If you have smallish hands, like me, you will find this a dream to play. It is very much like the rounded 50's profile found on most Les Pauls. I play a Gibson Les Paul Studio and there is no dropoff in playability when I switch between the two. The fretboard has slight curve to it and I find it to be well suited for players who drape their thumb over the top. Also, the florentine cutaway allows for easy access to the upper registers.

The electronics on these newer models are much improved. If I didn't have this prototype, I would buy one without a second thought.

The one shortcoming I've found with these models is a lack of bottom end. It can't compete with the standard dreadnought models but it isn't meant to. This baby begs to be run through an amp. I use a Rocktron Hypnotic Flanger, VERY subtle effect, and this baby shimmers. (I run my signal chain through an MXR 10 band EQ so I can add some bottom end.)

Another neat aspect is that you can plug this directly into a mixer for recording and get a very lively sound. (This is where the onboard electronics become very handy.)

The bottom line is that for the price you won't find many acoustics than can do so much. Perhaps that's the reason so many of these guitars have been sold. It makes sense to me.

I would like to thank Musician's Friend for giving me this guitar as a door prize. It was a close companion during the no-electricity days after Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. Thank You. Oh, I checked with Gibson. They confirmed it as a protoype and likely a one-of-a-kind item.

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Excellent instrument at this price point. Because of the shallow body it's a little quiet acoustically, but very comfortable. Good definition across the strings and a fast attack.
The electronics are fantastic! Clear, transparent and sharp focus. Tuner is surprisingly accurate but doesn't have option for anything other than 440.
I've only had this guitar for a few weeks, but have found it excellent for DADGAD tuning. Great 'quiet' guitar for songwriting.

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar first off. I ordered with the case for the pr5e and musician's friend went ahead and put the guitar in the case which was a beauty in itself. Out of the box this guitar has great action and a straight neck. This thing plays better than my fender and I love the hardware. All in all great product and would recommend to beginners and experts alike.

      Ask me a question

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought the sunburst model of this guitar a few years ago, and I have played the heck out of it. I have owned many guitars, and I have kept and played this one the longest. I decided I wanted to keep a guitar on hand at another location, and after research I was drawn back to this guitar. I got it in the natural finish. It does have a slightly thinner body (not as deep) but so much that it hurts the sound. It is easy to hold and play. I also got the Epiphone case for it which is very nice, too. Ordered it all by phone and got a very decent price.
