I've tried a lot things to keep from tearing nails when I play and the only alternative to Alaska picks I've found that permits my playing style is false nails (that destroy my already thin nails). I don't perform without them.

While touring In the mid-60s, substituted a flat pick for a thumb pick to to go back and forth between straight rhythm and finger picking patterns found the flexibility liberating. I eventually began using dental plastic as a false nail on my 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingernails so I could play harder. I stopped using the false nails when I quit touring but found that my nails (which were always thin) would tear if I played with any force. I read about the Alaska picks in a magazine interview with a well known finger picker and after a tough search found a folk music center that carried them. It took a few days of practice to get familiar with the slight technique and feel differences, but after a few weeks, it was remarkably like using false nails. I seldom play guitar now without wearing them.

I also play 5-string banjo and discovered that the Alaska picks work just as well as my finger picks so I stopped using the metal picks (though I do use a thumb pick). A benefit here is that I can now go back and forth between frailing and finger picking in mid-song.

I keep two Alaska picks with every one of my instruments and wouldn't do a live show without them. JB

They last quite a long time, and the only negative I've found is the plastic is not always consistent from pick to pick, so on occasion I get one that will not stay in place. I've also found that they can get flattened if pressed against something in the case, but the plastic has a memory and returns to it's original shape when put into very hot water.
They are a bargain even at full list price

When ordered - the sizing was small, med, large - but no estimate of what those were. I have medium sized fingers, in my opinion, so I ordered as such. The piks were only able to fit on my pinky! It would have helped to have a measurement scale or such. Since they were inexpensive, it wasn't worth returning, unfortunately.

As described, it works as an extension of your fingernails. However, you do need to already have a decent amount of nail grown to use these. I expected the color to be white but was disappointed with an odd cream/nude color

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

What a brilliant idea. I am a finger-style guitarist who is prone to breaking fingernails. In the cold weather months my cuticles and finger tips get try and sometimes crack. This makes for some pretty uncomfortable picking, particularly since I perform often. These picks are just right for me. File them so they go just a tiny bit past the natural end of your nails, and I think you will be amazed at the results. I still like playing with my own fingertips slightly punctuated by the sound my nails produce, and I will probably always record that way. But for live performances and rehearsals day after day, these pick are a wonderful invention.

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

I've been playing guitar for over 50 years and have never been able to grow fingernails or use standard finger picks (except for a few years on pedal steel). I also use my hands a lot for other projects and my thin nails break so easily I can never get them long enough before they break and they are very thin. Alaska Piks work and I am now doing 100% of my acoustic work with finger picks, where I never could for 50 years. While Alaska Piks are not as nice as actual fingernails, for those of us who can not grow or keep functional nails they are a godsend.

These picks work, but be prepared to go through several sets before you find the best way to trim them for you. I just leave a small point off the end of my finger. It's opened up a whole new world for me.

If you can grow nails, great if not, then take the time to get these perfected for yourself. If you find that you still have trouble keeping them on, a small narrow piece of tape around the pick will keep it firmly in place. I use very small band aids to keep them tight for a gig. Put the pad part on your finger and you will never get tape residue on your finger. The little band aids hold up and work for a week or two.

If you can't grow nails, These will give you the next best thing. I haven't tried glue on nails, but given the hassle and potential damage to finger nails, Alaska Piks are a very workable solution, but you have to figure out the best trimming process for you. I highly recommend these picks.

I had been having problems with my fingernails breaking and losing them during performances. I needed an extension of my index finger for picking and strumming. This is the best one that I have found to use. Easily adjustable and lasts a long time, in fact I bought more to have as bakc ups.

Picks all the same size! Fingers aren't! Even though they expand, it makes the fingers hurt around the nails. You need a finger nail to hold them in place. If I had finger nails, I wouldn't need them. Sticking the pick under your finger nail is also not comfortable! The idea is good - they need to find a better way to securely attach them comfortably to the fingers. Maybe add rubber to make it more like a suction cup over the fingers, leaving the ends open for feel.

We need a "undecided " added to the would you recommend them to a friend!
