I have played guitar for nearly 50 years. When my grandpa and uncles taught me, they all used plastic thumb and finger picks. You could buy them anywhere. All shapes, sizes, and colors. I love the style and the sound, Now, they are a thing of the past. They are impossible to find. I was so glad musician's friend has these. I ordered 3 dozen because I feel they will soon be discontinued. At every show I play people ask how I get my wonderful warm tone. It is in these picks. It will soon be a lost art form. If you want your blues to sound like the masters of early blues, remember, It's in these picks. Buy a bunch before they are gone forever.

The plastic and basic shape is workable. A decent fingerpick can be made from these, one that will be comfortable and useful. I have made three so far from the package.

But it took considerable effort. As delivered none of the picks were playable at all. The strike tongue from the finger grip is flat along all axes and too long, the grip too tight as well as bent back from the strike tongue instead of forward (the tongue is actually bent slightly away from the finger, as delivered).

To get these from their delivered conformation to something like the old Herco #60 Mediums (the ideal shape for most of us) took me about 45 minutes with the first one, down to 30 now counting polishing. The tongue has to be shortened, a long axis belly bent into the tongue, and the now u-shaped tongue bent from the grip to fit the finger and align the strike point with the finger bone or nail (prefer the bone, myself). Then the grip has to be rewidened from the base of each arm without re-flattening the tongue transition. It's not all that simple, actually, even when you know exactly what you want - this kind of thing would be much easier under factory conditions in the original manufacture.

They are also a tad thicker and softer than I would prefer (a bit of loss in feel and gain in drag/noise), but the extra malleability is necessary and the comfort of the material a definite plus. I haven't tried a general thinning and polishing step on the tongue - that's next.

If the above made sense to you, and you know what you are getting into, then they are worth trying - the material is quite comfy but still solid in the strike, the size is about right for fitting most people, the basic shape is good, the price is right, the delivery is expeditious. I would not recommend buying these as your first plastic fingerpick and expecting to be able to play music with them as delivered.

Boil half a cup or so of water in the microwave. Drop the pick in the hot water and leave it there for 3-5 seconds. Lift it out with a fork. Wait a few seconds and then form it to your finger and/or bend the tip to your desired angle. You can do this repeatedly until you achieve the desired fit and pick angle. I've been doing this for 40 years with a variety of plastic picks. It is EASY and effective!

Not really large, I have large hands and fingers. They are easily molded and sized with hot water, but they don't stay that way. You'll have to heat them often. The tips can be sanded to size to suit. The sound on a classical is great.

Had to heat in hot water and reshape, but now they work fine. I use them for a softer sound in recording my Dobro and for some sounds on my 12 string.

Comments about D'Andrea Finger Guitar Picks One Dozen:

I have large hands. The finger picks were noted as being size large. The are too small. The pick portion is too long. Aggressive use causes picks to fall off because of length and improper fit.
