      Acme Whistles

The Acme Whistles TH147NP Siren Whistle is sometimes referred to as the cyclist's road clearer. This unmistakable whistle sound—from a design introduced in 1895 and patented in the same year—still finds numerous uses. From tribal dances to marine signaling, this complex whistle is made with a watchmaker's precision.

Comments about Acme Whistles TH147NP Siren Whistle:

Legendary Acme build quality, it should last for just about ever. But mine didn't work when I received it. However the business portion inside, a spinning disc, is on an axle with needle berarings on each end. The pressure on the bearings is adjustable with a small wrench. Even once I got it loosened up and spinning freely, this thing takes a LOT of wind to get going. As such it's more of the two or three puffs with a gradually ascending pitch kind of proposition. Expect to take several seconds to get it up to full pitch and volume.

That is fine, if that is what you want, but it's not the kind of thing that you can use as punctuation in, say, a musical piece, due to the slow attack and decay, Not to mention the very large amount of wind it takes to get it going. Probably better for video, cartoon and general sound effects work.

We bought this to replace a 50 cent toy one that is, well, a toy. But that one gets up to pitch almost instantly and is an octave or so higher, which suits our needs better. I guess we'll try to find another for a spare.

Comments about Acme Whistles TH147NP Siren Whistle:

If you're a sound effects engineer, you need this. It isn't particularly useful for emulating police sirens, but the classic goofy sounds this makes are extremely varied and quite useful. Excellent for adding a bizarre or cartoonish mood to your music (Brian Wilson seems to be quite fond of them). It's a bit pricey for a whistle, but all in all this is a worthwhile purchase.
