This is my first dulcimer, so I'm no expert -- but having purchased this one, I can give you some details that I would've liked to know when I was thinking about buying it. First of all, I loved this instrument right when I opened the box. It was already strung, it just needed to be tuned up. As far as the stringing setup goes, this dulcimer has screwheads and requires strings with loops.

Also, it DOES have a 6 1/2 fret. Or mine does. I bought it thinking that it was just a standard folk mountain dulcimer (as the product picture and previous reviews would lead you to believe), so I was very thrilled to see this addition. My guess is it's a feature they started adding recently, perhaps.

It comes with a noter and a pick. I love it very much and it's fun to play!

I am new to dulcimer playing but as with learning the dulcimer itself, learning about dulcimers comes rather quickly too! As I said, I believe this is a great first-time dulcimer for an unsure hobbyist or a younger student. You get exactly what you pay for here?a playable, fairly good looking little dulcimer. What you don't get is the presence, volume, and woody sweetness that you get from other dulcimers, but all that should be obvious I suppose. The only complaint I have with my little dulcimer is that the nut and bridge seems to be a hurriedly-done thing that doesn't allow the strings to ring as they should. I am taking some height off of the both of them and re-cutting the string slots so that should fix the problem. The fit and finish of the rest of the dulcimer is almost perfect. If you want to sit in your living room and enjoy learning about and playing a real traditional American instrument on the cheap, this is the ticket. After you've worn out 8 or 10 sets of strings on this thing, hang it on your wall as dcor?or better yet, give it to a kid who'd love it, and then go lay out two or three bills on a much better dulcimer your now ready for. That's just my nickel's worth! Good luck deciding!

          Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

Purchased for my Daughter-in-law (non-player) for Christmas. An amatuer luthier, I checked it thouroughly for a couple of weeks before it arrived because I didn't want to give her garbage. All of the seams were tight, the fretboard was straight, the tuners moved smoothly, the nut was cut correctly, and the bridge had been positioned so that the intonation was right on when fretted at the octave. Now, in practice: it accepted a tuning readily and held it very well over the course of vigourous play and the two weeks. The sound is very nice and much along the lines of a good folk-crafted traditional dulcimer. That is to say it sounds like a dulcimer and not a guiter or any other kind of stringed instrument. The strings as delivered are an uninspired economy brand but absolutely servicable to get started playing. I would order a couple of sets of D'Addario or Martins and change them when the student is ready for the first string-changing lesson.
Bottom Line: What a helluva value for the money! Heck yes, buy one: learn to play, give it to someone, take it hiking to protect your expensive one, save it for teaching kids. You just can't touch this value for this money - leave the cardboard out of your plans.

This is a great duclimer that includes a 6+ fret position. It is easy to play and maintain. The included strings are still holding up (been playing for a few months now off and on)

With this instrument I've picked out songs relativly easy that I could not find sheet music to. I love it.

days later UPS delivered this beautiful flawless jewell..I have nick names for all my instruments and this one will be called "Ducie"..I have never been close to a dulcimer, ever, but that will be no problem.. I have taught myself to play many
instruments reasonably well so "Ducie" and I will do well together. Thank You Musicians Friend..

I purchased this Apple Creek dulcimer because of the low price and I am just learning to play dulcimer. My teacher examined it and told me it was a good instrument for the price. The intonation is good and it has the jumbo frets. It has a spruce top which enhances the sound quality. The volume is good, especially when plucked with the included pick. One thing I do not like is the in-line tuners, and if I was upgrading this piece I would change the tuners to separate ones. An excellent choice for a beginning student.

I bought this to learn on, nothing more. I wasn't expecting it be a very high quality instrument since it was inexpensive, but I am really impressed with the build quality! Has a really good satin finish, the fret work is very well done with no sharp edges at all. Very nicely made. I can't recommend this enough as a first Dulcimer, and although there are many higher quality professional instruments out there, they are at the very least triple the price tag of this little beauty. I do have a couple of suggestions to make to prospective buyers. 1. Buy at least one extra set of strings. The factory strings are cheap plain steel ones, and in fact the ones on mine were slightly rusted. Martin strings are only a few bucks and Really make a difference in tone. 2. Buy the Apple Creek gig bag to go with it. It will keep it safe and snug when you take it along on camping, backpacking etc. Also if you are a beginner like me, Apple Creek also has a beginners guide to show you a few songs and how to tune it. You will literally be playing in a few minutes after tuning it. This instrument is a lot of fun for everybody! One other thing, the info page does not say this, but it does come with a pick and a noter. Thanks to Musician's Friend for having something this fun to learn!

I, really like the total instrument for it`s total ability to perform well/play & sound professional.of course this would only naturally be in the hands of the beholder, tho`, it will do what & how you would want etc.the , only thing it is not is "too loud of an instrument", but then again this is really due to it`s much smaller box size, so it can only, "Ring Out So Much", tho` put it in front of a microphone which probably everyone will do even with expensive dulcimers anyways, so the volume is still quite good "Loud enough to "hear", anyways.
hi, I, am very pleased with purchase of this instrument. It, is a fine dulcimer..good sounding fo the price & price isn`t always everything anyways..the craftsmanship is el/superb by european luthiers who really know what they are doing etc.the wood(s) are very good, even better then one could ask for.tthe neck is very straight & the intonation could not be any better.an amazing price & it`s usually listed at over twice it`s cost as well to.don`t hesitate to buy this dulcimer whether you`re a beginner or even more advanced in playing instruments etc.very fitted & finish of it are incredible.I, could have purchased one for way more, tho` I, will later some day, in the mean "time", this one will really do for all the great YT music we want to put out there, & it really is quite a "great sounding dulcimer".thx! Musician`s Friend for your great service & promptness for our dulcimer purchase.
                            Quality is very fine!

                            Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

This is a great dulcimer to start out with and even if you are an experience player it is great to travel with. Downgraded from a 10 only because of their use of a 4 in-line tuning machine set similar to mandolins. Thus if one of the tuning machines starts to slip or breaks you must replace the entire set instead of easily replacing only the defective tuning machine. I purchased this for my wife to learn on and the sound is wonderful. We have others in our Dulcimer Group with this same dulcimer and it holds its own against the rest of the group's expensive dulcimers. For the price and quality it can't be beat.
A well made dulcimer with a fantastic sound quality, especially since the price is so low.
I downgraded the quality only because of the tuning machines, especially since they used a 4 in a row set of tuners similar to a Mandolin. If one breaks or even starts to slip you must replace the entire set instead of just the broken one. Most dulcimer manufacturers use 4 individual tuners for that reason.
Fantastic value for the price - I belong to a Dulcimer Group and there is a couple who both have this same dulcimer. It holds its own against the rest of the group's expensive dulcimers.
