Purchased for my Daughter-in-law (non-player) for Christmas. An amatuer luthier, I checked it thouroughly for a couple of weeks before it arrived because I didn't want to give her garbage. All of the seams were tight, the fretboard was straight, the tuners moved smoothly, the nut was cut correctly, and the bridge had been positioned so that the intonation was right on when fretted at the octave. Now, in practice: it accepted a tuning readily and held it very well over the course of vigourous play and the two weeks. The sound is very nice and much along the lines of a good folk-crafted traditional dulcimer. That is to say it sounds like a dulcimer and not a guiter or any other kind of stringed instrument. The strings as delivered are an uninspired economy brand but absolutely servicable to get started playing. I would order a couple of sets of D'Addario or Martins and change them when the student is ready for the first string-changing lesson.
Bottom Line: What a helluva value for the money! Heck yes, buy one: learn to play, give it to someone, take it hiking to protect your expensive one, save it for teaching kids. You just can't touch this value for this money - leave the cardboard out of your plans.

I am new to dulcimer playing but as with learning the dulcimer itself, learning about dulcimers comes rather quickly too! As I said, I believe this is a great first-time dulcimer for an unsure hobbyist or a younger student. You get exactly what you pay for here?a playable, fairly good looking little dulcimer. What you don't get is the presence, volume, and woody sweetness that you get from other dulcimers, but all that should be obvious I suppose. The only complaint I have with my little dulcimer is that the nut and bridge seems to be a hurriedly-done thing that doesn't allow the strings to ring as they should. I am taking some height off of the both of them and re-cutting the string slots so that should fix the problem. The fit and finish of the rest of the dulcimer is almost perfect. If you want to sit in your living room and enjoy learning about and playing a real traditional American instrument on the cheap, this is the ticket. After you've worn out 8 or 10 sets of strings on this thing, hang it on your wall as dcor?or better yet, give it to a kid who'd love it, and then go lay out two or three bills on a much better dulcimer your now ready for. That's just my nickel's worth! Good luck deciding!

Dulcimer was a great price and sounds good. The action was too high and made it more difficult to play, but I lowered the strings by filing the place where the strings rest on the bridge and it is fine now.

Though I have limited experience with a dulcimer, I have extensive experience with stringed instruments - playing them and repairing them. This little affordable player is simple, though attractive, clean, and has a sweet voice. With a little filing on the nut and saddle to improve action, and replacing the stock stings, it is a wonderful little starter dulcimer for any age.

                  Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

This is my first dulcimer and I have enjoyed learning to use it the past few weeks. I have played guitar for years. It is a 6 1/2 fret model, a couple of the frets are slightly misplaced and had to be adjusted to tune perfectly. Very well made for the money. Tone is not great, to be expected for the size, but it's wonderful to travel with and will meet my needs (strumming chords along to songs) perfectly. If you want to do fancy fingering and picking and obtain beautiful tone, buy a better instrument, but for a beginner using a noter, this one is great.

                        Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

Fantastic deal for the price. Not the highest quality instrument I have owned, in fact I was a bit disappointed in the build quaility because it felt a bit thin and fragile. But it plays quite nicely and really does have a pretty sound to it. I saw a review on youtube and took a gamble- I'm so glad that I did! I've already had many hours of fun on this instrument. Very easy to play, especially if you have any experience on another instrument. I had little songs constructed on the first day it arrived. So easy to play in this tuning that it's hard to make a mistake...if you do just call it "jazz". I understand the other reviewers comments that it doesn't sing the way a more expensive instrument might, but it is a great way to get started. I can tell that the dulcimer will be an instrument I will enjoy for a long time. I haven't changed strings yet, figured it made sense to play with these for now while I was getting a feel for it. If I can make it sound nice on these strings, it will only sound better when I upgrade! My only comment is that I threw away the pick it comes with. I guess I have big fingers- so I cut a bigger chunk out of a coffee can lid and I'm much happier playing with this. No more losing the pick, or missing the strum. Buy it- you'll love it!

This is just what I wanted to learn the mountain dulcimer without spending a lot initially. If I like it enough, I may get a better, one, but actually this seems built well, and may be all I end up ever needing. Sounds good. I got the case and beginner's book - a good combo to start out with. Nice little instrument. I'm enjoying it. Mine also has the 6 1/2 fret.
