I am a fan of old time music, mountain music and bluegrass. I finally decided to get a dulcimer and saw this one and got it. YES I did have to do a minor set up on this dulcimer but all instruments will need some kind of set up. In this case it as a minor nut and saddle adjustment. That is a normal thing to do on most instruments anyhow. Now lets get to the tone and other stuff. This has a sweet tone and you could mic this instrument or even get a pickup installed and really have some fun if you need to play it on stage. I bought a dulcimer capo (you need to look those up and find a seller) I bought the Apple Creek gig bag and the book too. Then I ended up getting the Mel Bay Dulcimer Chord Book. You get a pick and a noter to get you started with this dulcimer. I do not use the noter but I might at some point. Making chords on this dulcimer can sweeten up your music a lot on this traditional instrument VERY EASY to play. Another thing you might want to get later is a dulcimer players chair, a foot stool and some of that non slip drawer liner. That is what you place on your lap and set you dulcimer on that to keep it from slipping while playing. there are video on you tube where you will find this tip and some lessons too. Really easy to carry around and you might even want to find a jam session or old time music group or even a dulcimer festival. This is an instrument that is easy to play and lots of fun too. WARNING: you may become addicted to this instrument.

I am new to dulcimer playing but as with learning the dulcimer itself, learning about dulcimers comes rather quickly too! As I said, I believe this is a great first-time dulcimer for an unsure hobbyist or a younger student. You get exactly what you pay for here?a playable, fairly good looking little dulcimer. What you don't get is the presence, volume, and woody sweetness that you get from other dulcimers, but all that should be obvious I suppose. The only complaint I have with my little dulcimer is that the nut and bridge seems to be a hurriedly-done thing that doesn't allow the strings to ring as they should. I am taking some height off of the both of them and re-cutting the string slots so that should fix the problem. The fit and finish of the rest of the dulcimer is almost perfect. If you want to sit in your living room and enjoy learning about and playing a real traditional American instrument on the cheap, this is the ticket. After you've worn out 8 or 10 sets of strings on this thing, hang it on your wall as dcor?or better yet, give it to a kid who'd love it, and then go lay out two or three bills on a much better dulcimer your now ready for. That's just my nickel's worth! Good luck deciding!

    Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

Purchased for my Daughter-in-law (non-player) for Christmas. An amatuer luthier, I checked it thouroughly for a couple of weeks before it arrived because I didn't want to give her garbage. All of the seams were tight, the fretboard was straight, the tuners moved smoothly, the nut was cut correctly, and the bridge had been positioned so that the intonation was right on when fretted at the octave. Now, in practice: it accepted a tuning readily and held it very well over the course of vigourous play and the two weeks. The sound is very nice and much along the lines of a good folk-crafted traditional dulcimer. That is to say it sounds like a dulcimer and not a guiter or any other kind of stringed instrument. The strings as delivered are an uninspired economy brand but absolutely servicable to get started playing. I would order a couple of sets of D'Addario or Martins and change them when the student is ready for the first string-changing lesson.
Bottom Line: What a helluva value for the money! Heck yes, buy one: learn to play, give it to someone, take it hiking to protect your expensive one, save it for teaching kids. You just can't touch this value for this money - leave the cardboard out of your plans.

      Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

I have just begun learning to play the dulcimer. I chose this product because it was inexpensive, and I was not sure I'd have the aptitude or long-term interest to continue, and wanted to minimize the amount spent on an uncertain new interest. So far, I enjoy learning, practicing, and entertaining myself with it.

        Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

Though I have limited experience with a dulcimer, I have extensive experience with stringed instruments - playing them and repairing them. This little affordable player is simple, though attractive, clean, and has a sweet voice. With a little filing on the nut and saddle to improve action, and replacing the stock stings, it is a wonderful little starter dulcimer for any age.

        Awesome!

        Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

This is my first dulcimer, so I'm no expert -- but having purchased this one, I can give you some details that I would've liked to know when I was thinking about buying it. First of all, I loved this instrument right when I opened the box. It was already strung, it just needed to be tuned up. As far as the stringing setup goes, this dulcimer has screwheads and requires strings with loops.

Also, it DOES have a 6 1/2 fret. Or mine does. I bought it thinking that it was just a standard folk mountain dulcimer (as the product picture and previous reviews would lead you to believe), so I was very thrilled to see this addition. My guess is it's a feature they started adding recently, perhaps.

It comes with a noter and a pick. I love it very much and it's fun to play!

Dulcimer was a great price and sounds good. The action was too high and made it more difficult to play, but I lowered the strings by filing the place where the strings rest on the bridge and it is fine now.

                Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

This is my first dulcimer and I have enjoyed learning to use it the past few weeks. I have played guitar for years. It is a 6 1/2 fret model, a couple of the frets are slightly misplaced and had to be adjusted to tune perfectly. Very well made for the money. Tone is not great, to be expected for the size, but it's wonderful to travel with and will meet my needs (strumming chords along to songs) perfectly. If you want to do fancy fingering and picking and obtain beautiful tone, buy a better instrument, but for a beginner using a noter, this one is great.

                    Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

Fantastic deal for the price. Not the highest quality instrument I have owned, in fact I was a bit disappointed in the build quaility because it felt a bit thin and fragile. But it plays quite nicely and really does have a pretty sound to it. I saw a review on youtube and took a gamble- I'm so glad that I did! I've already had many hours of fun on this instrument. Very easy to play, especially if you have any experience on another instrument. I had little songs constructed on the first day it arrived. So easy to play in this tuning that it's hard to make a mistake...if you do just call it "jazz". I understand the other reviewers comments that it doesn't sing the way a more expensive instrument might, but it is a great way to get started. I can tell that the dulcimer will be an instrument I will enjoy for a long time. I haven't changed strings yet, figured it made sense to play with these for now while I was getting a feel for it. If I can make it sound nice on these strings, it will only sound better when I upgrade! My only comment is that I threw away the pick it comes with. I guess I have big fingers- so I cut a bigger chunk out of a coffee can lid and I'm much happier playing with this. No more losing the pick, or missing the strum. Buy it- you'll love it!

                    Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

I bought this to learn on, nothing more. I wasn't expecting it be a very high quality instrument since it was inexpensive, but I am really impressed with the build quality! Has a really good satin finish, the fret work is very well done with no sharp edges at all. Very nicely made. I can't recommend this enough as a first Dulcimer, and although there are many higher quality professional instruments out there, they are at the very least triple the price tag of this little beauty. I do have a couple of suggestions to make to prospective buyers. 1. Buy at least one extra set of strings. The factory strings are cheap plain steel ones, and in fact the ones on mine were slightly rusted. Martin strings are only a few bucks and Really make a difference in tone. 2. Buy the Apple Creek gig bag to go with it. It will keep it safe and snug when you take it along on camping, backpacking etc. Also if you are a beginner like me, Apple Creek also has a beginners guide to show you a few songs and how to tune it. You will literally be playing in a few minutes after tuning it. This instrument is a lot of fun for everybody! One other thing, the info page does not say this, but it does come with a pick and a noter. Thanks to Musician's Friend for having something this fun to learn!

                      Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:

This is my first Mountain Dulcimer. Even though I have been a musician for many years (prior to ordering this) I had never played a mountain dulcimer, so I wasn't sure what to expect.
I was not disappointed with this instrument. Naturally, there was a little setup work to do in order to make it easier to play. The action was a bit too high, but a little filing on the bridge saddle took care of that. There does appear to be one high fret, but that may be my fault for filing a little too much off the bridge saddle. The only other concern is that the intonation on the center string is just a touch off. It runs sharp as you work up the fretboard. As a temporary workaround I tune that string just a tiny bit flat. You really have to listen closely to notice it. I may end up making my own compensated bridge saddle. This certainly is not enough to deduct a star. The instrument is very playable as it is. I am having a blast learning it.

As a guitar/bass player for many years, I am finding this instrument to be a bit of a challenge to learn. It is strung backwards from a typical guitar. The bass string is away from you as opposed to toward you on a guitar. Another interesting thing is the diatonic nature of the dulcimer, as opposed to the chromatic nature of the guitar. There is definitely a learning curve here,

Overall, I love this instrument. At less than 75$ (at the time of this review) it is a great way to step into the intriguing world of the mountain dulcimer. If for some reason you decide this is not for you, the financial loss will be minimal. As far as I am concerned, this dulcimer is a keeper. I can highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning. I will have many enjoyable hours learning/playing this before I will feel the "need" to upgrade.

I bought this for my wife to learn on and it sounds great for the money, it is not a loud dulcimer but has a very good sound. It keeps a tune well, and need little adjusting once the strings are tuned a few times for the stretching. I would recomend this to any begginer. I can't say enough good about this item. What I can tell you is that we love it and she plays it every day.

I'm an amateur musician and picked this up on a whim to learn on. I am VERY VERY pleasantly surprised by the tone quality and playability. Tone is sweet and light but consistent, and much better than I ever would have expected on a beginner quality instrument. I've noticed some folks with issues about nuts and bridges. I bought mine as an open box item so was expecting to have to tweak it some, but it was perfectly playable right out of the box. Could not recommend this more highly. Very pleased.

For an inexpensive starter instrument, it is very nice.

This is a nice little instrument to get started with the dulcimer. It plays easily. I will most likely lower the action a bit and put on new strings. Thanks for offering this dulcimer at a great price.
