OVERVIEW

A crossover instrument for guitar players looking to expand their skills.

The Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin is designed as the go-to instrument for guitarists wishing to add depth to their repertoire by learning to play the mandolin. This carved, solid-top mandolin features a wider nut width and a radiused fretboard inspired by the Breedlove Custom Shop for exceptional comfort and playability at an affordable price. This is an excellent instrument for guitar players looking to expand their skills by picking up the mandolin.

Body Shape
The Breedlove O body is an elegant rendition of the traditional teardrop "A" body shape that has typified mandolin style from Celtic to bluegrass.

Woods
The solid, carved Sitka spruce top is complimented by the carved maple back and sides -- a timeless combination that produces exceptional resonance, projection and musicality.

Neck
The semi-gloss finish on this handcrafted neck provides the most comfortable and fastest playing neck possible by preventing hand binding from the sticky texture of a full-gloss finish.

Fretboard and Nut Width
The radiused rosewood fretboard is optimized for comfort and playability, and the 1-3/16" nut width provides wider string spacing for faster, easier chording.

Soundhole
With pronounced volume, the f-hole design articulates tone clearly so that it stands out from other instruments in an ensemble.

Aesthetic Elements
The semi-gloss black finish on this mandolin is contrasted by an ivory binding at the top and back body. The binding provides protection for the instrument and highlights the elegant dimensions of the mandolin.

Set-Up and Quality Assurance in Bend, Oregon USA
Breedlove's comprehensive quality control process provides the player with an instrument that will play great right out of the box. Prior to shipment, every Breedlove instrument undergoes a rigorous multi-point inspection in Bend, Oregon by their expert U.S. quality control team. They start with a visual inspection: they check aesthetic and structural elements of the body and all components for flaws. Next, each guitar is tuned and undergoes a play test, where craftspeople check nut height, relief, action, and string height. Based on the results of the play test, they then adjust for maximum playability. Next, each instrument is buffed and polished by hand with painstaking attention to detail. Once the instrument has passed inspection, a signed QC sticker is placed, and the instrument is carefully packed and shipped.

Comments about Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin:

This is an instrument that serves exactly what it was designed to accomplish. I have played the guitar for over 25 years and have now started to move into folk instruments. This is a very comfortable, great sounding, well-build instrument.

The first one I received had to be sent back due to a quality control issue (one of the tuners were likely tightened in a way that the tool caused a finishing chip. However, the second one I received is flawless. Musician's Friend was awesome with the return. Highly recommend.

Comments about Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin:

I had already planned to get this mandolin at some point after playing one at a local music store. When I saw it was on the Stupid Deal of the Day, I jumped on it. I love it! It plays and sounds great.

Comments about Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin:

The only positive things I can say about this instrument is that it had a neat appearance and was free of cosmetic flaws. It arrived with corroded strings and tuner pegs. The top was so thick it was not responsive and probably would never open up, so the fact that it was solid had no benefit. The nut is only 1 3/16" and the scale standard mando length, so for a guitarist the frets are cramped and uncomfortable. Even at Stupid Deal pricing, the Crossover was not worth keeping and went back. Most guitarists interested in the mandolin sound would be better off with an octave mandolin, which often comes with a 1 1/4" nut and a scale length in the 20-22" range, or the Gold Tone GM-6+ that fuses a short scale guitar neck with a mandolin body.

Comments about Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin:

I'm a professional mandolin player. I like Breedlove mandolins for their excellent build and wide string spacing. I went shopping recently at a large mandolin specialty store and purchased an American made Breedlove after playing about a dozen comparable of instruments, including the imported Breedlove Crossover. Both Breedloves are astonishingly good instruments for the money. Now I have just snapped up a Crossover on a Stupid Deal of the Day to use as a backup / beater instrument. Just too good deal to pass up.

Comments about Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin:

"Experienced" musician but new to mandolin... I bought the oval hole version and liked it so much I got this f-hole as well--still less cost than one mando at this quality level. I now play and prefer this one (f-hole).

Main reason I was interested was b/c Breedlove makes mandos w/ slightly wider nut (1-3/16) which really does make a difference for me, but doesn't make you dependant on that width. But I am blown away by the quality, sound and playability.

I believe the f-hole model here is more of a compromise between classic f and o sound, where the o-hole can be a little TOO sonorous. F-hole model seems to have a little more space between the string pairs at the bridge, which helps for tremelo.

The ONLY not-perfect aspect was that the strings sat a little unnecessarily high in the nut, but I filed them down using some (affordable) StewMac tools, lowered the bridge (very easy to do) and now feel like I have something absolutely first rate. Even if you had a tech do the slot filing, still WAY more cost effective. And fits PERFECTLY into the Musician's Gear A-style mando case. Highly recommended.
