I currently teach over 1200 4th - 6th grade students to read music via song flutes. I ended up purchasing over 1000 of these Conn song flutes this school year. I have had probably 20 of them come apart or break where the mouth piece joins the body.(I had never seen Conn song flutes do this before!) Disappointed, I contacted Conn's customer service to make sure they'd double check quality control and the kind of glue they were using. Still, it's hard to beat the price for a real, in-tune instrument that is both fun and easy to play. You can buy a soprano recorder for not a lot more money, but a recorder's a bit harder to play. The baroque fingering is not as straight-forward, and the lowest note (Middle C) is much harder to play. The Conn song flute plays from a Middle C to a high D (just one note more than a full octave). All the notes, including both the F sharp and B flat accidentals are easy to finger. I would recommend the song flute as a first, pre-band or even pre-recorder instrument. It's an exciting, viable way to teach music to children when the budget is tight. The song flute is fun to play, and fun to teach, especially when playing along with some of the newest MP3 downloadable recorder music. Several of my students bought extra flutes so they could teach their parents....and I'm having fun too!

I purchased this one and a tin whistle. Hands down, this one is easier to play with a wider range of tones and clearer tones than the tin whistle.

These song flutes are perfect for students and for an introduction to playing instruments! I use them for a grade three class. They are easy to master, "music" comes out of them the first time a student picks them up. This is encouraging and fun for them. Excellent craftmanship, sturdy little flutes. Just like the ones from school years ago! The students LOVE them, and I love the price!

              Good beginning instrument

              Comments about Conn Song Flute:

This is a sturdy, one piece, plastic instrument, that hold up well even with a little abuse. Determined students will be able to damage it by twisting, or banging on the instrument, but it takes effort. The tone is good for an inexpensive, starting instrument.
              Very affordable price. Good value.

              so much quick, easy fun
You cannot find a better real musical instrument for this price. Pitch is good and sounds great with minimal practice. Great for kids. So much better than a recorder. Only issue might be -- not easy to clean thoroughly. Rinse, shake and let dry -- holes are small. HAVE FUN! Great for Xmas tunes
for the price, this is a sturdy little unit

The best instrument $2.50 can buy!

              Comments about Conn Song Flute:

I've been looking for some new and interesting sounds for my recordings, and this little guy fit the bill perfectly. It has a very rich woodwind sort of tone, and is incredibly easy to play. I'm a keyboardist with no experience in playing wind instruments of any kind, and I was tooting out melodies right out of the box. The holes are very easy to finger, even for my large hands. Don't be fooled by the price, although it's made of plastic, it actually is a sturdy, playable instrument.
