OVERVIEW

Great for learning or performing.

The Classic Goodtime Special Openback is louder and brighter than the original Goodtime model because it has the patent pending Special Tone Ring and is great for players who like to jam and want to be heard. The rich brown stain, planetary tuners, and Deering peghead shape gives the classic look of a vintage banjo. This versatile banjo can also be played in the keys of A, B, or C by using the spikes (which are already installed) and a capo. If you enjoy playing standing up this is perfect as it weighs 6.5 lbs and you can stand up play it all night long!

Being an open-back banjo, this is great for the Clawgrass style of playing because the tone ring gives it that brighter tone needed for Clawgrass music and other modern open-back styles that need a banjo with sustain that projects freely. It is first and foremost a very playable instrument that is built to be durable and travel easily, all the while being a superb sounding banjo.

The Classic Goodtime Special is an achievement in keeping the cost down while providing an instrument that will stay in tune and perform reliably. Made in Spring Valley, California (outside of San Diego), this is a comfortably playable banjo with a wonderful bright tone. It is a solid, dependable instrument that is immensely playable with excellent tonality and clarity.

Comments about Deering Classic Goodtime Special 5-String Open Back Banjo:

This is the eighth 5-string banjo I have owned, the fourth open-back. (I've also tried out any number of other banjos and "passed" on them.) I have been delighted with my base-model GoodTime, but I wanted certain additional features that this banjo has. As I had hoped, this banjo is as easy to play as my original GoodTime, which is one of the easiest fretting, hammering, sliding, and pulling-off banjos I've ever owned, and I've owned some good ones. There are five notable differences, one of which is cosmetic.

The WALNUT FINISH (even though the banjo is maple) helps it look more "old-timey".

The TONE RING ring makes it more "chimey" and less "plunky" than my base-model GoodTime. (The "Special" tone ring is a feature of their "Special" GoodTime lines. If you pick Bluegrass exclusively, though, consider the resonator version.)

The SPIKES at frets 7, 9, and 10 are very nice, and will keep you from having to find someone you trust to do this later on. If you have a spike at the seventh fret, you can change the tuning of the fifth string from G to A simply by hooking the string on the spike there, instead of retuning, which puts additional wear on the strings.

The PLANETARY TUNERS are top notch. I never minded the guitar-style tuners on the base-line GoodTime, but I have planetary tuners on my Bluegrass 5-string, so this makes going back and forth between the two more intuitive.

It also has an ARMREST, which isn't an expensive upgrade, but it's nice to have already installed.

It is definitely the best open-backed banjo I've owned so far, and quite possibly the last one I'll ever need.
