This instrument has one more and one less string than the instruments I usually play, but I can't imagine it any differently. This is a BANJO, that means that it is a Bodacious Acoustic Nonsensical Jangling Object, or a Bad A Nectarine Jesticulation Organism, if you will. You can a'pluck it. You can a'strum it. You can a'claw it. You can a'hammer it. I do all of the above, and with little skill and even less motivation. You don't have blood splatters all over your banjo's head? Well, my friend, you are not trying hard enough (I don't have blood splatters either).

On the serious tip, mine has had recurring fret sprouting, of the finger-slicing variety, even after several fret-end dressings. However, it is winter in the midwest, and the air surrounding the banjo's sensitve pores is not always as moist as Daddy would like, if you know what I'm sayin'. I'll deal with it and it will settle in like all fretted instruments do, unlike you lazy lamoids who think there's something wrong with it.

All in all, it doesn't get better for the price, and it doesn't price better for the get, so get you one before it gets you. My pappy always said that "If I didn't have you kids, I coulda been somebody". Well get one of these, and maybe your father will love you. Probably not, but maybe.

I bought one of these a few years ago to try and learn the banjo. This is a very basic banjo and a horrible value compared with the Fender closed-back models available. It's not a terrible instrument, but very basic. However, I was most offended that Deering included cult literature from the Church of Scientology in the package. When I wrote Deering to suggest they keep their religious views out of the banjo business, they sent me more literature! My advice would be to take your business elsewhere and enjoy a better value.

    Comments about Deering Goodtime Banjo:

This banjo is perfect! I bought it for my 9 year old. He had his father's banjo which actually is for bluegrass playing. My son is learning old-time music. This banjo is lightweight and has a great old-time sound.

        Comments about Deering Goodtime Banjo:

I am a Flamenco guitarist with 40+ years experience, and recently decided to try my hands (literally) at Bluegrass, and purchased this banjo about three weeks ago. Tone sounds good to me even without a resonator, fretting is accurate (and I've found no burrs, as others say they have), tuning pins are decent quality (I am used to friction pegs), and the instrument seems well-made. I don't care much for the color, but that's just aesthetics. It's a simple, reasonably well-made instrument for the money. Should come with an armrest, but I got one from Deering and it took all of 5 minutes to install.

I like play with alternate open chords for the cool harmonic dissonances on the Goodtime. Sweet sound.

                  Comments about Deering Goodtime Banjo:

I bought this based on the reviews posted here, also the 4th sale sealed the deal. This Banjo is perfect for a beginner like myself. Very good quality, the only issue I had was the first and second brass frets had metal burrs which poke your fingers if you slide on them. Will have to file down at some point. Surprised Deering quality control didn't catch that. I emailed them and of course no response.

                    Comments about Deering Goodtime Banjo:

The Deering Goodtime banjo was recommended to me by a professional musician. I did not get the resonator which, for my casual use, is perfectly fine. I bought a "returned" model and it is indeed perfect ... I'm a guitar player, so learning to play banjo on this very high quality instrument is a pleasure. The fact that it's made in the USA is also a big plus to me!

This is a great banjo. It's light, easy to transport and sounds real good. It sounds almost as good as my Scruggs Mastertone and it's a lot easier to handle during practice sessions. In fact, I find myself practicing a lot more for that reason.
