OVERVIEW

Superb appointments and sound at a manageable price!

Deering's most popular professional grade banjo for almost 20 years. Greg Deering knows what it feels like to want a professional banjo and not be able to afford it, so this has become the flagship of their line. The Sierra is affordable with all the most important features that affect the tone and playability. Simple detailing allows Deering to keep the cost down, while still giving you all the important components of a high quality banjo.

The heirloom-quality, professional Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo features a sand-cast, virgin bell bronze, genuine Deering tone ring mounted to a 3-ply rock-maple rim with a one-piece resonator flange. Uses the same tone ring, rim, and flanges as the Gabriella model, which lists at $24,950! The mahogany neck, resonator with ebony fingerboard, planet-style tuning pegs, and satin finish enhance the classic appearance and playability of this powerful and affordable banjo. Deering includes a $180-value case with your Sierra Banjo.

This banjo is on my wish list but I can review this since I have played this model many times. I am a banjo picker and I play bluegrass music with the Scruggs Style picking. This banjo has everything a bluegrass banjo should have to start with. I would advise adding some things for serious bluegrass picking. you will want to be able to play in other keys besides G. So you have a couple choices here. Add model railroad spikes on the 5th string to give you the ability to capo up or get a Shubb 5th string capo so you can capo up that way. i have spikes on my banjo and i like the Shubb capo too. another add on i will go with is a set of Kieth D tuners. Normally those go in place of the 2nd and 3rd string tuners. Those come in handy when tuning to D and when you want to play some Earl Scruggs tunes. Get a GOOD cradle strap too because you are going to need it. Now for the banjo itself. DEERING did an amazing job in the design of this banjo. The pot has a REAL tone ring and is a very good design. you are getting a banjo that will hang in there with those pre war Gibsons and other high priced banjos that can cost as much as a house. You show up to a bluegrass jam session with this banjo, folks know you mean business. It has the traditional look and its tone is like a good bluegrass banjo should be. But if you jam be ready to change keys a few times so have your banjo set up with a way to capo up to play in other keys. Once you play this banjo and get good with the picking style you will not be so fast to put this banjo back in its case. Good jam sessions at bluegrass festivals can start in the late afternoon and go on till the sun comes up and the vendor booths open up to serve coffee and breakfast. Get a few sets of strings when you order this cause you will need them on hand just in case. I will warn you that this banjo is going to be addictive and the more you play it the more you will like it. Try one and you will know. DEERING makes amazing banjos. Get this banjo.

I have had my Deering for about four years and have been for the most part very pleased. It has good action and quality tone. The chrome metal that they use on the outside of the pot is cheap and it tarnishes easily. I play mine often enough that it needs set up at least wice a year. For the money it is a good banjo

Comments about Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo:

I've had my Deering Sierra 5-string banjo for about a month now and couldn't be happier with it. I started playing banjo back in the early '80s and have played an Ibanez Artist banjo the entire time. I had no idea what I was missing until I played my Deering for the first time. You can tell it's a quality instrument just by the feel of it in your hands. The tone is crisp and clean and the intonation was spot on all the way up the neck right out of the box.

Comments about Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo:

I Jest bought mine, compared to all the other imports at is price range or any higher end banjo you cant beat the sound. The tropical American wood on the banjo is good wood, unlike most imports. This being said makes the overall sound of the banjo better, This banjo as a warmer sound than a lot of your gibson banjos, furthermore for the price its also beeter than a gibosn becouse the only gibson banjo at this price is the RB wich dosnot have a tonering, whille the seirra has the same tonering as the higherend modles. And atleast mine sounds jest as good as any high end banjo, it jest aint as pridey

          A Great Banjo

          By Trickyjones

          from Valdosta, GA

Comments about Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo:

I've owned my Deering Sierra for about three years, and it's still impressing me every day. I love the "crispness" of the tone on the higher end of the neck. It doen't, however, seem to possess the deeper "growl" on the low end as do the higher end Gibson models, but its overall sound is extremely rich and bright. My Sierra was a good buy and a wise choice; I'm very happy with it.

          Virgin Banjo Player

          By Chris Chandler

          from Norfolk, Virginia

Comments about Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo:

My daughters got me my Deering Sierra for Father's Day two years ago. I'd had my eye on it for some time and it followed me home. The sound is incredible and after hearing my teacher play it, (one who can really play the thing) I was convinced. Easy to tune and keeps its tuning, butter neck and durablity make this a top notch instrument. Have played many other more pricey brands and have yet to hear the crisp and clear sound of this Deering matched. I will own this banjo to the day I die. Makes all these lessons and hours of practice enjoyable.

I have owned alot of good banjos, this is the very best yet at any price. Very good tone and the neck is just right. Must be because they make banjos only. Thanks Deering for a great banjo! Keep up the good work!
