I currently own a set of J. Dunbar's wonderful P1 GHBs, and have been very impressed. The quality is outstanding, the tonal qualities easily match (and in my opinion, best) my friend's African blackwood McCallum pipes. Dunbar is a master craftsman, who knows how to keep pipes affordable and makes an amazing chanter. The only downside is the antique styling and the non decorative appearance (a personal opinion). For quality, ease of maintenance, sound, and indestructibleness, these pipes recieve 5 stars. Excellent first set of pipes, although I do also own Gibson Fireside pipes.

These are actually pretty nice pipes. The pipes themselves are easy to tune and have great bores. Dunbar makes a really good product. However, the included bag and reeds are junk. With a different bag and reeds these pipes would sound great and be very air efficient. Alot of firefighter pipe bands use these pipes with synthetic reeds and bags and are very happy with them.

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

My Kintail bagpipe always took a lot of wind - regardless of different bags, drone and chanter reeds. The Dunbar P1 plays well with less air pressure and produces excellent sound from both the drones and chanter. I'm amazed at the difference and plan to get back into piping again (quit when my Kintail just took the fun out of piping - never enough air pressure, regardless of reeds).

Great set of pipes if you can live with out the bling

    By James Teague

    from Bloomington IN

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

I play in a service band and one of our members plays this set of pipes. They have a much richer tone to them and our actually are slightly louder then our McCallum's African Blackwoods. I'm pretty sure we use the same drone reeds, bag, and same chanter reeds. He has alot less trouble with the drones especially since the humidity doesn't effect the plastic like the blackwood.

Highly recommend this set if you don't have your eyes set on the decorative blackwood's with all of the special engravings and just interested in buying a great sounding set of pipes that will long outlast the player, get these.

To be honest I like the sound on these more then my own set of African Blackwood McCallun's but I like the bling since we are a service band. The other thing to consider is alot of good quality bagpipes increase in value as the age but these more likely will not increasing value since they are primarly made of synthetic material. That being said up close they remind me of a toy because of all of the plastic. But they sound awesome with good quality drone reads and a decent bag.

I recommend using wood reeds versus synthetic. Synthetic reeds tend to be harder/impossible to tune with a mass band with the higher notes. Synthetic is great to play around with but after several events I find it easier and quicker to switch back to wood to stay in tune with my drones and the other pipers.

Hope this Helps. The question is to bling or not to bling?

    First Set

    By Askscratch

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

I'm in 3rd month with these pipes. Left the Chanter for the Kitchen Pipes and left those for these P1s. Not ornate and I'm good with it. Came with a Hard chanter reed and hide, which was fine for a while, except starting with a hard reed is tough, so this set allows one to modify. I put EZs in the drones & bought an EASY reed, replaced the bag with a Canmore - happy as a lark as I learn and improve the skills. Highly recommend this set.

    Fantastic beginer pipes

    By Tyler-OeYhv

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

Poly is by far the easiest way to gay as far as beginning goes. I would not reccomend them if you plan on competing. plastic doesnt quite have the look of the african black. im 15 and i have a set of shepherds as my first and only set so far but i have heard these exact pipes played and sounds just like any other set of good scottish or canadian made pipes. First off, a hide bag is good and durable but you can buy a synthetic bag for about the same price as a new hide bag and you dont have to do anything to the bag hardly ever and make sure it has a zipper. honestly check into buying a canmore pipe bag. any ways if you get these buy everything else synthetic aswell. takes a load off a newcomer to bagpipes' shoulders. fantastic pipes with low matenance.

    Perfect, except for the bag

    By Prester John

    from Canton, Ohio

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

We got this set for my son - his first bagpipes! And the Dunbar is excellent, though not exactly as presented in the photo, sadly. My only complaint is the bagpipe bag. It was a standard hide bag, but leaked alot and had to be replaced, which was not cheap. This is a great product, but expect to spend another $250 on a good pipe bag if you have the same experience we did.

    Only for beginners

    By Donlonbagpipes

    from Washington DC/ Dublin ireland

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

I am only reccomending this for the beginner piper. You shouldn't buy this if you want to mess around, thats why they make chanters. You can use these in professional competitions, but I wouldn't reccomend it. If you know anything on chanter, a few tunes at least, buy this set. Dunbar makes great stuff, but this is a beginner set only. Once you get good, then you can buy a real wood set.

    Professional Quality, Unmatched Value

    By Piperguy

    from Iowa, USA

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

The pipes pictured appear to be Dunbar's P-1 model, so my comments will address the P-1. This is an outstanding stand of pipes from one of the best pipemakers in the business. They are low on ornamentation, but all of the characteristics that really matter in a set of pipes have been addressed nicely. The synthetic material sounds nearly identical to blackwood and requires little maintenance. The tone of the drones, when set up properly with good reeds, will equal or surpass many blackwood sets. For entry level pipes, I wouldn't recommend any others. They're the real thing. When you're ready, Dunbar makes stunning blackwood pipes in several different ornamentation levels.

Great Set for Outdoor or Beginner

    By Amy M McGlothlin

    from Andover, Massachusetts

Comments about Dunbar Bagpipes Student Bagpipes Package with Case:

Nice solid set of pipes that holds its tuning in all sorts of weather. If you play outside alot and worry about your blackwood pipes, then this is a great alternate set. Several members of my band have these and they play great and sound great.
