Well, I am currently waiting for Fed-Ex truck to pick up my second try at the mando-bird. I've have taken both of them to my set up guy and when he puts it on the strobe tuner and gets the open strings in tune that's o.k. but as soon as you fret any string the strobe tuner goes CRAZY!!!! Most chords sound way out of tune especially in the first five (5) frets. Steve says that most likely the nut has been misplaced during production. I love the look and feel of this little thang....but I can't handle the intonation problems. Also, the tuners are supposed to be "Mini-Grovers" but the back of the tuners read "ginho"!! Never heard of that.?Overall, it seems like a solid instrument and after adjusting the bass side of the pick-up down, away from the strings, the electric qualities are very hot and sounds great through a P.A. or acoustic amp. I am actually a guitar player but I play a little mandolin so that's why I choose this Mando-bird, for it's look and it seems that everytime I get asked to play the mandolin it is always in an "electrical or live" situation, never an acoustic front porch foot-stompin' bluegrass session. So that's why I'm ticked that it just didn't seem to work out for me. And the price point is great...very affordable for just about anybody! I hope the one you order will play chords in tune because the 2 I tried would not. GOOD LUCK!!!

hooked on mandobirds

By Anonymous

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

The mandobird is the funnest mandolin I have ever played. I was at a convention when I first played the mandobird, and it was love at first sight. The mandobird is easy to play, has clear sound, and works for whatever you want to play. I have played music for 4 years and I absolutely love the mandobird. It works for bluegrass, country, and probably a lot more. Its light weight, and practically plays itself.

Mandobird rocks!

By Kosher Q

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

Just got the Mandobird, and its really awsome. the e-string is a bit quiet if you have it turned down, and it isn't the best for distortion, but i really enjoy playing it, its loads of fun. its great for just about any type of music, unless you want lots of distortion. it has a good sound, and no bad parts. pretty cool.

Mandobird VIII dissappoints

By MandoMan-IJmY4

from Los Gatos, CA

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

The nut was problematic on my Mandobird also, and the paint job around the neck/fingergboard join was sloppy. Otherwise the quality was good. But I returned it because the E-string was much quieter than the others, which was a real problem. I'd play a jig and the volume jumped when moving from the E string to the A string. I tried it on two amps and that made no difference. I figured I could't fix that, so back it went.

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I have had mine a couple months now.Have gigged with it a lot. Play it straight thru your guitar rig.Sounds great with a slap delay and plate reverb.Strings can be found on the internet or make up your own sets. In a two guitar band using this half the nite really creates a lot of listener interest and keeps me interested too. Brown Eyed Girl has never been so much fun to play!

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

This is a great electric mandolin option for a reasonable price. Mine came out of the box with a non-working pick up, so there are some quality issues here, but overall I think it is worth the price. I'd like to have some more tone and pickup options

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I play this weekly with a 5 piece band. Amazing sounds through my Acoustasonic Jr amp and my Vox VT 80amp. Started out playing sweet sounding fills and riffs, now find myself playing a lot of leads. Bought from MF, only required minor tweaking to get intonation perfect. I bought both the 8 string Mandobird VIII and 4 string Mandobird IV.Replaced the pickup on 4 string with custom wound PU for better e string tone.

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

Mandolins are supposed to be a little outta tune. The acoustic bodys of mandolins back the strings up and create a complete sound.
When you take away the acoustic body of a mandolin and force all of the 8 short strings harmonics through a single coil pickup,
things are gonna sound outta wack here and there.
Why Epiphone gave this little monster a solid 1 piece bridge is beyond me.

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

A very nice Indonesian-made instrument. The nut and bridge placement issues mentioned in other reviews applied to the instrument I recieved. After a new nut, and a bridge reposition, mine plays extremely well. The stock pick-up is a bit weak on the treble-side. Treble boost (or bass cut) is needed to produce a balanced and even volume and tone. Overall, a very strong and nice sound. A great value, and a great player! I am a novice mandolin player, and and very pleased that the Mandobird VIII is my first mandolin.

      Great Value

      By Mandolive

      from Minneapolis, MN

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

The intonation complaints that this instrument gets is due to the cheap plastic ill-fitted nut that comes with it. First modification to do on this thing is have a bone-nut fashioned by a competent luthier. The pickup has a warm-weepy quality to it I really like, however it does not pick up the high frequencies very well. You have to run it through an equalizer or compensate for it on your amp by maxing the treble and cutting out the mid. Having said that, you will not find an instrument this good for twice the price. Good Action and intonation after you replace the nut, a joy to play.

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

This is a really cool piece!But...out of the box it needed fret leveling, the bridge relocated, fresh strings, and the nut slotted properly...typical for Indonesian product.I'm a gtr tech,so it wasn't that big of a problem, but add around $100 to have the work done. Now it is big fun to play, sounds great, and looks really cute next to my 2 Firebird V's...:-)

      Great Value, Replace the Nut

      By Mike-RMmTq

      from Winter Park, FL

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I love this little guy. I am an electric lead guitarist in a classic rock band that plays out about 2 to 3 times a month Since we have three guitarists, this instrument adds some variety to our sound. Love the look, originally interested me in buying it. The only problem is the cheap plastic nut. The G strings keeping popping off. You know how annoying having your G string come out of the groove can be. When I tried to enlarge the groove, the plastic chipped off on the end. After replacing it with a bone or graphite nut I am sure it will be great.

      Love my VIII!

      By Lazy Jay

      from Wisconsin

      Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

At first I thought it needed ball-end strings, but it doesn't. Just be sure to put the string through the bridge from the bridge side, bring the string over the bar and put the end through the loop. Now, when you tune up, the loop pulls the string DOWN onto the bridge. Do it the other way and the loop will pull the string UP off the bridge! And I have no issues with the thin sounding E strings. I love my VIII!

        Mandobird VIII awsome

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

        Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

This mandolin is way high on the cool factor (20 ot of 10 stars). People who saw me with it were blown away by it's classic firebird look. Though when i first got it the A and E pair were really buzzy sounding but once I got new strings on her she was fine. Sounds really crisp thrugh the amp and my drive and effects sit well with it(wah is awsome with it). Pretty much the only solidbody mando before insanly high prices of custom made ones, it even possible to bend on it- my acoustic electric cant do that. It is awesome and you could lie and say you spent a lot of money on it when you really didn't.

This thing is cool. I play mandolin in a proggressive folk band. At a special show last year I pulled this thing out and plugged it into a halfstack. It put out a surpising amount of low end chunk. Its been the stuff of legend ever since.
